the best camry-vanity plate combo i think i saw in NJ. It said ``RUDESI2``..
anyways the reason i think lexuses are slightly less expensive (great value for good money) is because they kind of have the camry kinda look.
camrys now also come with an orange dashboard-mounted ganesha option, complete wih factory-issued haldi sachets.
the best driving sedan offcourse is a 540i, pretty much any model year, and that is worth spending karmic capital on.

veeresh:
It`s amazing to see the difference in the image of Sonata between India and North America, or at least Canada, where it is a fairly cheap car and they give a seven year (or is it 10-year?) warranty on it.

Toyota Camry is a luxury car in India, and because it is still imported FBU/SBU, it costs a lot more than it would if it were imported SKD/CKD or made/assembled in India.
However, with the ``made in India`` cars, the dominations used to be British/Italian in the days of Ambassadors and Premiers. Then we moved to Japanese with the Marutis. And now it seems as though the South Korean brands are sweeping the price points. Hyundai Santro at the base, Chevrolet Optra (Daewoo Nubira) at the entry luxury.
Samsung overtakes Sony in India by spades. So when will Indians abroad start valuing the Sonatas and Terracams and Kias?

Thanks for the comments on the article, an unwelcome change from the earlier responses. I have watched with dismay the decline of chowk interacts and a confirmation of what I believed. In the anonymity of chowk, one can only splash vitreol around, and it could be selfsustaining. The days of interacts running into thousands appear to be gone, many have taken refuge under blogs.
My observation about Camry is very true in Australia, it is a country in the //ss end of the world, change in fashions are slow to come. Also the income level of indians in auss are not very high, the IT fuelled immigration is not there, most are family based immigrants, Camry is the dream, unlike the american NRIs, not many can afford SUV.
May be I should get back to chowk to stoke the interacts, to breathe some fire into the ``hate``.

Jay
There is an unwritten norm that goes in USA:
The Corporate yuppies drive Lexus
The soccer Moms drive the SUVs
The Oldies drive the Lincons, Buiks
The boys drive the Fords - trucks(pick ups)
The girls drive the Camrys
The status-conscious drive the Mercedes, BMWs

Tahmed is conspicous by his absence on this board. I thought by now he would come in and declare jay as CREIP-e-azam :-). In fact I think it was jay who motivated him to come up with all that taxonomy in the first place.

Yesterday I caught a clip from a movie on Nightline (on Indian movies). The clip was of a large crowd and someone announces on a mike `Mr Patel, the lights of your Toyota Camry are on`, and the entire crowd runs out :).

Welcome back, Jay. You have been missed, especially by your great friend and admirer Tahmed.
I have never driven a Camry but my family sedan, Mercury Sable, is getting long in the tooth. I am now wondering if I should use my $3200 accumulated in my GM Visa card or forget about that credit and go for a Japanese car, as everyone wants me to.

At least, in Ozland one is spared (I think) personalized license plates such as LAL GADI on a red car or PC GURU.
In the US, it is MANDATORY for expat Indians to buy either a metallic beige or silver Camry. Other colors, it would seem, invite a fine or penalty of some sort.

Welcome back Jay.
Looks like I have escaped Karmic Burden too. I drive a car that is acknowledged as being in the top 10 lemons of the last 20 years. Its tough but somebody`s got to set the trend.
