Ras:
I am so glad you wrote this. On travels when people make it a point to meet special souls or spend at least some time with the less fortunate, it reveals a lot about them. I respect you even more for this.
Edhi saab is indeed a shining example of selfless service. ``I survive by begging,`` he said. He has put himself in the place of the others he helps, which is the mark of a great man and a true malang.
Regards,
Farzana
PS: Hope you had a good trip...everywhere...
PPS: I notice that those who keep cribbing about FP being full of Hindu-Muslim, Indo-Pak nonsense have nothing much to say here...

``if nominated he should withdraw his nomination``
Good suggestion. On the other hand, the unlikely event of Mr. Edhi`s winning the award will break the exclusive hold of Christians on the `humanitarian` Nobel Prize.
Mr. Edhi has worked no less tirelessly and with much less threatre than did Ms Teresa. The award will bring him needed money and helpful recognition. So I still hope he is not denied his due.

Please don`t catch the same disease that loser Hindus have spread to every corner of the Hindu world. If you think Edhi`s not getting the award is not fair, then say so.

A. S. Edhi is a great man. He does not need a nobel prize to prove his greatness. Nobel commity would only honour itself by giving Edhi this prize.

Edhi has won the Ramon Magsaysay award. If Teresa could be given the Nobel Prize, Edhi deserves it even more. Out of that sense of fairness, I hope he finally get`s one.
But the Nobel Peace prize was never meant to recognize charity work. It`s given for important political work with peaceful/conflict-resolution overtones.
Christian missionaries are a special breed. They are the mothers and the fathers of the world.

WHERE IS NOBLE FOR EDHI?????
Another year went by and Mr. Abdulsattar Edhi is not even considered worth a nomination for a nobel. It is the same Mr. Edhi who is currently running the world`s largest ambulance service containing 700 ambulances and 6 air ambulances; 350 Edhi Centers that provide medical and community service free of charge, in addition there are 14 different welfare institution being run by Edhi that provide different services to human beings not only in Paksitan but other countries including North America as well; Edhi centers provide free medicines to 1750+ patiets on daily basis; every year Edhi provides funeral services to 4260 people who die in accidents and are never identified; Edhi services provide meals two times a day to more than 205,000 unfortunate people; Edhi foundation takes care of 2384 menatlly ill individuals, provides financial support to 292 poor children, 730 orphans, and 846 helpless women; every year Edhi dispensaries provide medical aid to 463,000+ patients free of charge; Mr. Edhi has so far given bath to 16000 unclaimed dead bodies with his own hands; he has raised 13000 abandoned infants, most of them left to die or be eaten by stray dogs on garbage heaps by their mothers and turned them into useful citizens of this world- while he do all these things the shoes that he wear are eight years old mended several times, his cotton shirt and shalwar are usually three years old. Where is Edhi`s Nobel prize? Where is Edhi`s nomination for Nobel prize. While terrorists like Bush and their goons like Mushraf have been nominated for peace prizes. What a joke.
I would request all Pakistanis and Muslims not to fall into shamelss propaganda that others are somehow superior to us. Resist and question this nonsense that is subtly being injected into us. There are thousands of people in pakistan alone who work in humanitarian causes, literature, education etc. Even while educated through the pathetic and abysmal education system, when given opportunity, Pakistanis have worked wonder in Engineering, medical, science and education fields at home and abroad.

This man prevents riots on roads... when accidents or carnages happen... his team is there within minutes whereas our civic agencies turn up hours later (remember Latifabad?). In a cosmopolitan city like Karachi no hospital has a decent ambulance service... when my dad was suffering from cancer and had to be shifted to Aga Khan which was only 10 mins away, it was always the Edhi Ambulance that came to help. Ras I wish you had visited the home for destitute and mentally challenged children... if there is anything in the world that can make YOU feel small and useless thats the place... Yes he can be rude and caustic but if there`s anyone who is entitled to his opinions its him!
Isphahani sahib, dont think you realize that you are talking about a man who is not shy of bathing maggot-eaten days-old corpses; however I dont blame you and your views because....
Jin kay rutbay hain siwa
Un say siwa mushkil hai
Ras, how does one initiate his nomination for the Nobel?
Btw, as we read, Edhi Sahib is in AKUH undergoing treatment. Please pray for his quick recovery.

Dude....
i am an accountant.... management, chartered... u name it...
just to let u know that systems and controls are my thing...
Edhi Foundation has one of the best systems...
btw... talking about tom dick and harry collecting money... UN which is oh so very western and systematic had some pretty nasty scandals too...
leaving the rationals out...
around 0200 hours last december...
i saw in front of me 2 bus ramming into each other....
while i parked my car... got out... was running an analysis... getting the picture... trying to call police
an ambulance was already there...
in 5 minutes (i timed it) there were 10 of them...
they all were edhi`s...
police came after an hour or so...
if i ever have to give money out to any charity.... i think edhi comes out on the top... cause i saw how well the money is used...

Very Good article.
Edhi is a living saint. I don`t find proper words to show the amount of respect I have for this person.
