Mr Ali, very nice article...informative and to the point. I hope more people will come forward and write about areas like Lalookhati, Landhi, Malir, NazimAbad...etc.
In response to what Labyrinth1 said, I think all these parties are Equaly responsible for all this mess in Lyari and other poor areas/slums. In most cases these parties support these elements (people) in order to get a strong hold in the area. Like MQM did, or People`s Party (PPP) in some areas.

Re # 3 Veeresh Bhai ,
Layari is home to what we call ` Makranis of Karachi and Pakistan ` thats what this place is famous for . These people are involved in all sorts of sports from boxing to football and cycling - and donkey cart racing .
About your post Veersh Bhai Layari had always been a PPP ( Pakistan Peoples Party ) strong hold where this party had always won - these rouge elements in Layari is not supported by hardcore political parties these people are working quitely and they just disappear. So if you are thinking these elements are supported by any political party I am afraid you are mistaken.

This indeed is noble effort in bringing to light the dark side of lyari. This is another proof that police and establishment cannot solve any social problem, if fact they are part of it. It is upto the general population to start thinking about it. And articles like these will some day have an effect to make this chnage.

Thank you for this article. Refreshing change from the usual pissing competitions.

Google a bit about Lyari and you come across this ````Lyari has been a stronghold of leftist and secular forces since 1947. Most of the Balochs not only of Sindh but other parts of the country were associated with leftist and later nationalist parties, who were comparatively progressive, at least in their outlook.````

( http://www.urckarachi.org/Lyari%20Thirst.HTM )

````With the passage of time, the situation in Lyari also got changed. Though even today it is a stronghold of the PPP, religious organisations also seem to be making their roots in the area. Leftist elements have lost their strength. Sunni Tehreek, Dawate Islami, Tableeghi Jamaat, Jamiate Dawah and even Jihadi and sectarian outfits have found an opportunity to get some members in this citadel of secular forces.
````Resultantly, a few target killings of doctors and other people in the name of sect also took place. The first person, who was killed in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban, was also reportedly from Lyari. Recently Mutahidda Quomi Movement (MQM) has also established its offices in some parts of Lyari and lost some of its workers as well.

````Today, Lyari is known for two things: gang war and water shortage. ````
Question: Why doesn`t an exodus back to the rural areas start, then?
We need more coverage like this from
Karachi`s poorest areas
which continue to suffer from neglect.
Finally, somebody has the balls to say how aweful life is getting in parts of Karachi, and telling it like it is. This sort of stuff is not just restricted to Lyari, it happesn in Laloo keth, Lanchore Line, and Post Office Society, as well as many others. Something needs to be done, and the first step is awareness. This article is a step in that direction.
