Romair: urstruly came to the US with the pilgrim fathers in the 1600s. Formed the first settlement, now known by his grateful descendants as Urstrulytown.

aakhir ye islam kiss chiriya ka naam hay?
there has been research going on since centuries about what really is islam, what does it require us to do? even on chowk, i have seen no moulvis respecting ideas of each others. you have to probe, let`s say three or four ideas in each other`s presense and they will grab each others` necks. it seems like god has never revealed the real islam which still lies in heavens in the form of a 1140 soorah book and what we have is a book of riddles, the greatest source of confusion the world has ever seen.
Pakistani people? What do they want?
these are the people with a twisted sense of reality because their mental factulty is only engineered to protect the interests of mostly the divine and the army. while they reject downright fundamentalism, they are prepared to give their lives for the very forces which are responsible for this fundamentalism. they are simply confused.
i think only a rein of moulvis which is 1 times more brutal than ayatullah and which affects almost each pakistanis personal life will make them able to say, as the gora says:
aur bhi dukh hein zamane mein muhobbat ke siwa,
mujh se pehli si muhobbat mere mehboob naa maang,

I`m in india now, went to the supermarket to pick up stuff, quite a few men and women there like me, doing last minute grocery shopping, tired staff trying to be pleasant.Typical supermarket scene. What relevance does it have to this article?.Plenty, according to me.What fascinated me wasn`t the fact that you can get anything that you can get in the west in an indian grocery supermarket, or that the checkout systems are far more streamlined than those in many advanced countries. Not the superficial stuff. It is the people. The fascinating collage of human beings, men and women from the mod, westernised chick to the frumpy gudiya in a salwar, the metrosexual in bell bottoms to the heterosexual in a kurta/pajama.And in traipsed in a bunch of women covered from head to toe in burkas, chatting away chirpily and shopping away merrily. This is what i love about india.Yes india has its` share of fundamentalists of all hues, and we do hear enough about them on chowk. But it is the majority that prevails and in India the majority is secular,or at the very least follows the letter of the law and constitution. To each their own.Life is so fascinating and fun `cause of the diversity here. Each block is a new experience. It is the people that can make a change. It is time the people in pakistan made that change.

The true elite of Pakistan are people like Edhi. Abdus Salam. Asma Jehangir. Aziz Bhatti Shaheed. Jinnah. Iqbal. Abdul (the guy who earns an honest living).
The rest are either loudmouths, empty heads.

faisal, I am actually on YOUR side. The killings that maulvis do or the ones that folks like ferozk instigate (such as the bombing of pakistani citizens via gunship helicopters) are really all part of the same chain. So everyone is killing everone else. And all that intellectuals like ferozk want to do is to figure out how to make it more spectacular.

haroon #103 - ``The problem with us as a nation is that we are plagued with a retrogressive self-proclaimed representatives of Islam on one end, and their neo-liberal secular counterparts. Both are leeches to this nation. The true Muslims must rise and establish the proper Islamic state as perscribed the the Quran. ``
HAROON ZINDABAD !!!!!!!
you at a young age understand the aspirations and the problems of pakistan MUCH better than the hatefilled, irrational, and illogical agenda of ignorant fools on this board.
well said !! Its rational and thinking young people like you who are the true hope for the survival of pakistan as a nation.

Shrine blast toll rises to 40
By Our Staff Correspondent
QUETTA, March 20: The death toll from the Fatehpur shrine explosion soared to 40 on Sunday as 15 people seriously injured in the blast died in different hospitals.
The bomb had exploded on Saturday during the Urs of Sufi saint Pir Syed Rakheel Shah at his shrine in Jhal Magsi district when devotees had gathered in the kitchen compound for evening meal.
The province`s top police official ruled out the possibility of a suicide bomber being behind the blast. ``It was a time bomb,`` Inspector General of Police, Balochistan, Chaudhry Mohammad Yaqoob said, adding that a time device and splinters of bomb had been found at the explosion site.
He said some unknown people had planted the bomb in the kitchen area of the shrine which exploded when hundreds of people were busy collecting their food being distributed there.

ferozk writes ``Please define the term ``elites`` in the context of Pakistan.``
feroz, in the context of this essay, let me keep things simple by stating as to who is NOT an elite in Pakistan. The maulvis are not elite. The common people are not elite.
With that said, I am amazed by the naivity (or perhaps selective memory??) of well meaning and well educated folks like you. I understand how disturbed you get when you read/hear stupid or narrowminded things from a few maulvis. But I hope you also understand my pain when I read stupid and narrowminded things from folks like yourself. I have read a few of your ilogs where you have called for the killing of pakistani citizens who hold opposite point of view than yours.
Frankly, in that you are no different than mullah that you despise. You both are equally hate-filled, bigoted and prone to settle arguments by thuggery rather than intellect. Considering the fact that increasingly the ranks of maulvis are filled with extremely well educated folks, I really don`t see ANY difference between you and them. Its all about who has the upper hand at a given point of time.
With that said, I truly believe that the salvation of Pakistan as a country lies in people who can understand the need of pakistanis to progress in the world, while maintaining the fairness and freedom for ALL (not just for punjabis, not just for military and not just for beer guzzling lahoris) and who understand and respect the value pakistanis place on their religion.
Without that, we might as well be discussing our strategies in the aftermath of the break-up of Pakistan.

A good post.
(Democracy is not about majority rights as much as it the gurantee of the majority protecting the rights of the minority. However, democracy is about having a representative voice in the sharing of power and not necessarily in forcing the views of a particular group over another one.)
Well said.

``...the insecurity does not come from India? I`m truly flabbergasted to hear this. Please enlighten me how these insecurities have come about? May be because a hegemon is sitting to our east, occupying a province of Pakistan, and it has interfered in our domestic affairs. Who invaded who in 1971?...``
This is what i was talking about. Nazi Germany blamed the jews for their failures. Today, some Paksitanis would like to blame India!
Generations of Pakistanis have been indoctrinated into believing that India was the great satan to the east. It will take many more generations to undo the damage.
I hope Harronellahi has read the Hamdoor Rehman Report that details the atrocities committed by the Pak Army. It is useless to blame India. India was only stoking the fire but the fire was your own creation.
