Quote from ``Outlook`` dated April 25 2005
``We are not living in the time of the Inquisition``, the poet Firaq Gorakhpuri, told a homophobe in 1937, advising him to get rid of his `pedestrian` prejudice. It`s time to remind ourselves of this advice, now that a plea to remove discrimination against millions of indians has for the first time reached india`s highest court. It is for the Supreme Court to decide whether those who love people of the same sex will be allowed the basic right to live in dignity.
Recently the Delhi High Court was asked to strike down Section 377 of the indian penal code which criminalizes homosexuality. The court dismissed the pleas on technical grounds.A Special leave Petition is now before the Supreme Court, which asks why the Delhi High Court should not be asked to reconsider the petition.
This is encouraging. The Supreme Court of India has shown that it is ready to intervene in matters of citizen`s rights..................``Unquote.
THE AUTHOR: Saleem Kidwai.Mr Kidwai is a Lucknow based writer and co-author of Same-Sex Love in India:Readings from Literature and History.
Whether one agrees or not with the above, all indians should be proud that we live in a free society governed by a constitution with powers of accession, judiciary and a free press.Jai Hind.

amrita,
.......shoresahib is quite right when he says, ``There are very few Gay men in Pakistan, but there is a whole lot of homosexual behavior going on``.......... i don`t have any statistics to prove this, but i am going to go out on a limb (again!) and say that 1 out of 10 pakistani men has had some sort of homosexual experience, willingly or unwillingly (now watch romair and echoboom come charging out of their respective dark closets !!!).......
........... having said that, i would like to make it clear that 1 out ot 10 pakis is not a homosexual - their sexual experiences are the result of the strict segregation of sexes ......... some are victims of pederasty at the hands of madrassa teachers, school masters, employers, truck drivers and other grown men who either do not have access to women or have developed a taste for young boys ......... for example it is not uncommon for truck-drivers to have a young ``cleaner`` as a travelling companion and shopkeepers in bannu and mardan have a ``boy`` who runs a few errands but mostly sits around looking pretty with kohl in his eyes and a silk handkerchief around his neck ......... it is also true, as one would expect, that a lot of these sexually abused boys grow up to be abusers thmselves - ``bachman mein kuni, baray ho kay khoni``..........
........ it is also fairly common for boys in boarding schools to indulge in homosexual behavior; the stricter the environment the bigger the problem (not that i am saying it is a problem !) ........... boys in cadet colleges like sargodah, hasanabdal, petaro, etc. are more likely to have had their rear ends exposed than their counterparts from lawrence college or aitchison ............pretty boys - cheekos - are particularly vulnerable and fall prey to bullys and other homesick boys looking for a little loving ...........i am sure there are some who actually have homosexual tendencies and fall into a lifestyle that is natural for them ............. boys talk, and sometimes their reputation follows them into college when they would like to forget their past - this can result in some interesting social dynamics and high drama !........... it is also not uncommon for some young men to exploit their good looks to gain favors from richer students - use of a motor cyscle or car, movies and dinners - in lieu of services offered ..........
.......... based on my life experience, of the many (that is quite a few) guys i knew who indulged in homosexual behavior i think only two were really gay - the rest were ``regular`` guys who would have preferred to mess around with girls if they had been given the opportunity ...........in most cases these guys ended up getting married and leading normal lives - however, they do tend to avoid old friends and acquaintances !!! ......... even the two ``gay`` guys did get married - one lasted three days and the other is still married and even though everyone makes fun of his limp wrist he did manage to produce a couple of kids !
p.s. i did not go to boarding school or madrassa and no, i was not a pretty boy ........

This was exactly the situation in India in my time. You called them `cheeko`, we called them `chikna`; you called them `kuni`, we called them er.. `gaandu`.
...I thought that the pathan boys with kohl in their eyes and a silk handkerchief around their neck were called `aashnas`.

I went to a boarding school.....and in all those years only one case emerges - of ``M`` who was fought over by the two cousins ``L`` & ``I``. The cousins themselves were an interesting story one was Hindu and the other Muslim. Truly in our country Hindus & Muslims can be equal partners if the will is there.

Homosexuality is not a genetic disorder, it is a choice.

urstruly,
``Homosexuality is not a genetic disorder, it is a choice`` ............ it is very easy to say that, and a lot of people do ........... but do you know - really know - a homosexual ?
........we grew up with a cousin who everyone thought was ``different`` even when he was five years old ....... he had seven broters and sisters, younger and older, and all of then were straight, jazak allah khair, but he was different ......... same parents, same schools, same food, same maulvi sahib , but yet ...........
.......... just because you think something doesn`t exist doesn`t make it go away .............and maybe i am right and one of of ten paki men has had a homosexual encounter and that is why we are so paranoid about it ..........

But eventually you turned out to be just fine - with family and all. Is there still a problem?

Great observation Hamidm Sahib, Bravo!
Looking back, when I was 15 and attending First year at Govt FC College, Lahore; I remember something, many guys especially Masters or 4th year students would invite me to their Hostel rooms to hang out. I was so naive at that time, I had absolutely no idea, but I used to have a good friend who strictly forbade me to go to the Hostels. I am glad he did!

Re: # 41
I agree. Homosexuality is not a genetic or any other kind of disorder.
Hamidm, Considering the Homosocial Pakistani society, I would say atleast 4-6 in Pakistani men has had some homosexual behavior. Human sexuality is complex, and it expresses its self in a multitude of ways. I dont know about women, but men are obsessed with sex. It only makes sense, it is the biological imperative hardwired into our genes.
Even our closest primate relatives, the Bonobos, use homosexual behavior in their society for a variety of reasons ranging from social cohesion, pacification of the dominant Alpha male, and for that age old reason, They do it because it feels good!

Re: # 46 hamidm
Thanks for the love letter but no thanks. The problem with me is that I do not seek the company of like minded men. I guess, I have this problem because I am the dominant Alpha male. I need to be pacified.
