Samina: It`s in the nature of an insecure and regressive man/woman to badmouth the western world. Beyond that, I would not lose any sleep on the mental diarhea. To give an example: Can anyone please ask around that how many women in Pakistan or for that matter in the muslim world own their own property? Majority must have inherited/will inherit that from their parents or ancestors or husbands. The situation of successful muslim women in the west is quite different. Those who are responsible and have done well in their respective careers (and not jobs) have established them on their own. The insecure(men/women) get threatened by such developments. They want to live and die in the black cell of imagination that women cannot support themselves and do well to contribute to their respective communities.

Then you have the nonsense on the pay structure: for each dollar a woman gets 83 cents whereas a man receives 95. This happens at a certain level but this does not make women paupers. There are quite a few enlightened men on Chowk who like to beat that drum more often than necessary. I am positive that only 2% may have women in their lives who are even capable of earning those 83 cents. Then you hear the argument that those women have men to take care of them. This whole concept of taking care is misunderstood and has taken a demeaning path.

with all due respect to your enthusiasm, we all recognize the problem thus only offer solutions of different sorts.

Personally, I think in any contentious situation the solution is not to arm the aggressed as prevalent in the contemporary west, but to disarm the aggressor. For a predominantly Muslim population Islam offers the best solution for the oppressed women against the misguided mullahs and their followers. Beat them at their own game by utilizing/brandishing the God-given rights - the nuclear weapon that works best as a deterrent, if you must. But for that they must learn Islam better than their oppressors, mullah or secular. Then they must put that knowledge into practice, i.e. education for all others, dress code, and worshiping in their every act - not just 5 daily prayers and recitation of Quran. One can`t have a half-baked untested atom bomb and expect results of a refined and tested one.

Assuming the defunct western model is only going to weaken them as it has weakened the western woman more than she used to be. Just because they have jobs doesn`t mean they`ve proven themselves to be equal to their counterpart.
