India`s growth forecast to top all but China`s
DELHI -- India`s economy is likely to grow by 7.2 per cent in the current fiscal year despite rising world oil prices and U.S. interest rate hikes, a private industry report said yesterday.
Growth of more than 7 per cent in 2005-06 would make India the world`s second-fastest growing economy, after China, for the second consecutive year. Last year, India`s economy expanded at 8.5 per cent, its highest in 15 years.
The report by the Confederation of Indian Industry, a group of the country`s top private businesses, cited growth in the industrial and services sectors, a positive outlook for agriculture and broad-based export increases as reasons for the high growth figure for the country`s fiscal year that ends next April.
The agricultural sector was expected to grow 3 per cent, industry by 8.1 per cent and the services sector by 8.3 per cent in 2005-06, the report said.
The government expects economic growth to be around 7 per cent during the year.
The report said India`s economic growth would have been higher if it weren`t for high international oil prices and rising U.S. interest rates.

MantoLives:
People coming out of Sindh University, Punjab University and Karachi University are MiddleClass people in my book. Even if you claim your background was middleclass or whatever, you having a degree from an Amercian University makes you an Exception rather than the norm. My point still stands. You cannot present yourself as a representative sample of the middleclass peeps there. Having a degree/diploma from an American University still worth a lot in Pakistani private sector.
Romair:
please, expend your unexhausted sympathies on a `nick` over an anonymous forum if that makes you feel better. But do try to check, what is IT that makes you equate words like Elite and Pakistan interchangeably like - you assumed i was denouncing pakistan when i was talking of Elite`s karnamay. Was it some sorta clockwork orange style instruction you got back in Risalpur that has to do with it?

This is what the self appointed flagbearers of secularism Congress have to say about Advani`s calling Jinnah `secular` >>
Cong attacks Advani for praising Jinnah as secular leader
Press Trust of India
New Delhi, June 6, 2005
Congress on Monday attacked BJP President LK Advani`s praise for Jinnah as secular leader saying he appears to be wanting ``Jinnah`s brand of secularism`` that advocated the two-nation theory which Congress always opposed.
``It is truly ironic and astounding that Advani considers Jinnah secular. Perhaps Advani would like to explain to the nation the new definition of secularism.
``For Advani, as for Jinnah, as indeed for Veer Savarkar, secularism can mean a two-nation theory``, Party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said.
Singhvi also said that Jinnah had demanded separate electorate on the basis of religion and if it was this secularism ``it can mean a division of India on religious line which Congress always opposed. Jinnah always demanded it and Advani now supports. Advani desired Jinnah`s brand of secularism in India``, he said.
Referring to Jinnah`s speech quoted by Advani, Singhvi said, ``One speech in August 1947 does not make Jinnah secular, just like one swallow does not make a summer``.
He said secularism of India`s freedom movement and Gandhi-Nehru could not possibly be compared with that of Jinnah, who on the death of Mahatma Gandhi referred to him as a Hindu leader.
Advani`s support to Jinnah`s secularism is just like a ``hypocrisy and flip-flop-flip`` on the Ayodhya issue. His tears at the demolition of Babri Masjid are nothing but crocodile tears. Such expression of pain was nothing but the changing colour of a political chameleon inspired by lust for power,`` he said.
I posted this in a response to those who made the assumption that only the right wing rss elements in India were opposed to categorisation of Jinnah as a secular chappie..

Dost-mittar,
You asked if there were brahmin bonded laborers ?
Yes they are many - they do toil on the land, but they are not as badly placed as sc/st.
in many/if not most of India, the economically/educationally weaker brahmins
are below the so called ``backward classes`` but above the sc/st in the societal heirarchy.
Lacking land holdings the only chance is in education - that is why you see so many
brahmins as communists.
Go figure !!

Advani`s back in Bharat.Facing flak he is...............
Neither did Advani explain his saying in Pakistan that the demolition of the Babri Masjid was the darkest day of his life.
He ended on that note, failing to stay and answer newsmen’s queries.
Advani was speaking in the backdrop of posters put up by Hindu Jagran Manch which said ``Jinnah Samarthak (supporter), Pakistan premi (sympathiser) Advani, vapas jao (go back Advani).``
The only time Advani referred to his words having caused strife within the Sangh Parivar was when he said that, ``I have come to know that my remarks have triggered a debate. I have no objection to it. Debate is good``.

Gandhi also used religion to reach his objectives. Gandhi however did not misuse religion the way Advani has done.

A politician with the stature, experience and success of Advani, is far too shrewd to make a, “mistake” like this. If Dost-mittar’s explanation is correct, and he is not too talented as well, then it implies that he is even more shrewd than most. Because, people without talent can only rise to the top, through shrewdness.
One would guess that Advani would know he can never be, “popular” in Pakistan, amongst anyone (Nazar Hayat excluded, who seems to like his teeth) regardless of what he does or says. Vajpayee could be popular, specifically for his Kashmir solution efforts. But not Advani. Whatever little doubt anyone in Pakistan had about the creation of their country, was removed after Ayodhya. That event by Advani was more a recognition, by him, of the necessity of Pakistan, than any comment he could make at Jinnah’s mizaar. After such events, Advani will remain unpopular in Pakistan, regardless of what he does (with or without good teeth)……….
His visit also cannot be to gain popularity amongst Indian Muslims. I could understand if he did that by visiting a mosque in Delhi, but how exactly will that happen by visiting Pakistan? What exactly are the Muslims in India going to say? Are they going to start voting for him, now? I doubt it……..
If this was done to promote peace with Pakistan, then that could have been achieved by making a few statements from India. Or he could have just toured Pakistan, without stating anything that would be considered controversial, by his BJP supporters. Most Pakistanis realize that Vajpayee and BJP did initiate the current peace process, from the Indian side. They do not need Advani to come and visit to tell them that………..
So why in the world did he show up, and create all kinds of problems for his party and himself in India, without gaining anything.
One would have to guess that it is an internal BJP matter. Maybe he wanted to threaten someone, within BJP. Maybe they wanted to bypass him, so he decided to create trouble. This visit certainly has shaken up the BJP. It is quite evident on this site, amongst the various BJP supporters. They cannot figure out whom to blame……….One of their own, in fact their hard line leader has turned their own philosophy on its head…………..

re: HP`s post
``From 1947 to 1970, India really had nothing to show for economically despite political stability.``
Miyan,
Political stability ensures building of infrastructure, growth of institutions like IITs. India`s talents groomed in IIT later could help contribute towards the Silicon Valley growth. Much of that talent can be seen today in Bangalore.
You need to have sound fundamentals before the economy can take off. India still needs a lot of investments in infrastructure but the human talent is in plenty. Latter is due to the institutions that silently played their part during the ``economic inactivity`` of the first 40 years.

rshridhar,
But Gandhiji did not use religion to cause schism between people. He used it to motivate people. I think that is the difference.

re: Mantolive`s post
(He told Daily Times that a gas pipeline was in Pakistan and India`s
interests. He shunned American apprehensions as irrelevant and said
that India had cited ancient Indo-Iranian civilisation ties to the
Americans. ``Whatever the Americans might say, we need the energy and I
presume you do too, and without it our growth prospects will be
seriously threatened as I suspect yours will be too,`` he said.)
Mani Shankar Iyer is a moron. He has no notion of world politics. If he thinks that US is going to sit by and watch as the Gas pipeline is built from Iran, he is in a la-la land. The problem with the guy is that he lost his original ``Iyer`` brains when he married a Punjabi. Now, the guy has lost it all.
Iran is non-negotiable for USA. A nuclear Iran is a nightmare but a nuclear, cash rich Iran (cash rich from sale of gas to India) is a bigger nightmare. So, Mani Shankar Iyer will learn in good time that when it comes to gas, the only thing that works is the one in his belly! Iran gas aint` gonna work.

Hate to butt in but this is hilarious:
``The growth rate this year was 8.4% - third highest in Asia, behind China and Singapore (tied?).``
Romair miyan,
Everyone knows India is behind China in growth rate. Where did u get the figure u state? Surely not from Pak govt? The figure u quote was all cooked up. So claims your own country`s daily.
Read the following:
http://www.nation.com.pk/daily/june-2005/6/columns1.php
CII (India) forcasts 7% growth for India. This is just behind China`s growth rate.

BTW, this is not cooked up!
