If Shivaji was the greatest Hindu king, then where do you place Ashok(before converting to Budhism), Chander Gupt Maurya, Harsh Vardhan............and even before that Ram Chander, Janak and Harish Chander? or is that the greatness is only measured in terms of opposition to mughal rule?

``Yet the conquest of the Deccan, to which Alamgir devoted the last 26 years of his life, was in many ways a Pyrrhic victory``

Wolpert is completely wrong. It was not a victory - Phyrric or otherwise. It was a complete defeat. One of the few instances in the history where a small nation repealed and defeated an all out attack from a much greater and richer nation. A la Russian Finnish war.

Its good article for understanding RSS type fanatics, they can be be extremely dangerous and best way is to fight fire with fire. Recently things are going down and from Kashmir banega pakistan , to self rule to surrender is journey has started. Its good we have north indian rulers as Indian rulers as they are soft. Our leadership is also soft like north indians stupid and unthinking and slavish attitude. , Let us hope no maratha leader become chief as they have brains to plan and carry out program of destruction of Pakistan. Also note when last Maratha war lord was defeated it was considered conquest of India as all nababs and maharajs were slaves. In 1857 also these maratha leaders exiled to Kanpur made trouble and and lost battle but in long term they won as English understood the game is lost and maraths knew its now waiting game. Also maraths killed Gandhi and laid foundations for RSS type organizatuion. They seems to be good fighter as especially in north India after defeat at Kanpur by english company survived and escaped reorganised and March towards Gwalior a gave great defenvive battles for year before those treacherous tatntya tope, raosahib peshave hanged. .Indian leadership had acute sense soon pakistan will fell it self which happened precisely in 23 years. Now indians are started sabotage in B.Stan specially with low level intensity blowing pipeline, electric and rail tracks at will and its not easy to control as B.Stan is alomst 42% area. But there is no urgency to pacify things just talk of appeasement as these little fire has tendency to get bigger.
We can do as Shivaji done and capture kashmir. Indepedent kashmir can kill us. As then they will start useing water for their use and detrimental to Pakistan. Still is time to attack india before it consolidates into big giant monolith and dangerous to us. As most our our people have become whiners and do not want to pay extra taxes for war in Kasmir and army is always avoiding confrontation with india, shivaji way is right to defeat india and snatch and Kashmir. As people number is increasing rapidly they need to expand east and southward as historically. In long term delhi will have pakistani governer. South India can be left as maraths acan give trouble and drain on money as Alamgir times. Little enclave can be sikhshahi and they can act as pakistani gurakhas to control north india as a junior partner. Even China can bear on India, provide then some land in Kashmir. Army should be emboldent o think of Northern india coquest as will provide all food fiber and water needed for expanding population. 1000 cuts is good policy no good will come from talking, talking we lost east pakistan. Soon 80s f-16 will join fleet which can eat indian old aged migs and varients and before they are proficient with use of SU-30. India is still dependent on railway not like pakistan. Some destruction of 15 junctions of rails canbring india to standstill also same with few west coast harbors put out of commision with atomic attacks by Gurrillas ( so India can not retaliate) also with americans in country India can not do. Time is short or enemy will be getting stronger and not favourable to us. Jehidi war against india is only way to Kashmir to be part of Pakistan. Talk is opium, vajpai was ready to give Kashmir but kargil spoiled game and take over dashed hopes.

Any way more interesting is cricket war coming. Our team will win due to Pindi express as they are not used to fast express at over 105 miles. We should not become international joke by givin g holiday for each victory. If prople want to real celebrate they should work overtime and donate money to Kashir war.
good night everybody time to hit bed bed, good ideas in mind.

I agree with Veeresh Ji that we can consider this topic closed. I agree with Manto Bhai that the more you build up Shivaji the more Hindutva modern Indian appears. I agree with Black Wind that Shivaji has his place in history as another empire builder. Tagging heroes and villains is a dangerous pastime. :)

Next topic, please !

I second Veeresh`s post-

Instead of Jinnah/Nehru, Gandhian racism and shivaji the marhatta- lets allow Veeresh to write one of his world famous (in Golflinks) reviews on :

The joys of having nicely done Panchgaviya with a hearty glass of good ole` Morarji ale !

To me, he appears similar to Robert Clive, who took every advantage of acquiring/ winning territory. Obviously you cannot grudge him his place in history as an empire builder from scratch.

Beyond that he was just an ordinary person like we all are.

Enough, already, on the subject, please?

As if the usual Jinnah/Nehru debates were not bad enough, we now will have to sit through Shivaji/Alamgir exposes.

And in bad English, too.

While I do understand that this gives A Certain Interactor much joy and room to post repeatedly but can we move on, please?

Thank you.

``Shivaji was religious; but he was not fanatic. Although iron hearted, he was not cruel. He was daring, yet not impulsive. He was practical; but not unambitious. He was dreamer who dreamt lofty aims and had the firm capacity to convert them into reality. His lifestyle was not simple. Having adopted a choice, rich lifestyle, he was not lavish. He was gracious to other religions. ``

He also wrote to Aurangzeb`s Hindu general to join forces and ``Stamp out Islam from India forever``

``Indeed, he entertained no thoughts of mass education or liberation of women or removal of casteism or, for that matter, setting up printing presses (though a section of historians actually believes it strongly that Shivaji had a keen interest in printing presses). He had no thoughts of approving widow marriages or terminating the system of childhood marriages.``

He should win the title of Mahatma to be historically accurate. Was he also against medicine ?

I am glad more and more Indians are accepting unabashedly that Hindu cultural life is the central motif of Indian nationalism and has been so since the late 19th century (When the myth of Shivaji was first invented by Hindu reformers like Ranade)... making Sir Syed Ahmed Khan`s suspicions all the more accurate.
