Thank you all for your objectivity in seeing BOTH sides of the issue. I take your advice with gratitude and humility. I have resolved to NOT respond to profanity with more profanity. It has its advantages. I just noticed that I did not answer faisaluno`s vulgarity in kind and Mr. Godot, instead, was quick to put him in its place. Chowk is definitely a good place with many decent people around - just like the Chowks of India and Pakistan.

The apology to you (for any inconvenience caused by my attempt at humor) was sincere - probably in recognition of your honesty in responding to Mr. Soulat`s persistent probing. I acknowledge that and really commend you for telling the truth as well as you could. :)

While we are pleasantly engaging in polite and constructive dialogue, I want to say a few things about abuse, credibility, and fairness - only because I have this passion about discussing ALL sides of an issue. Like you, I oppose abuse against women, but I also oppose abuse against men. In this era, when we are struggling for gender equality, it doesn`t make sense to ``protect`` women from ``male`` abusers while encouraging their abuse of men by making excuses that these women ``are the fiery kind of new urbane educated no-nonsense women.`` There is nothing educated about remarks concerning ``penises falling off,`` and designating every male opponent as ``namard.`` A male posterior is just as provocative as a female one. Jokes and humiliating remarks about men`s genitals are just as menacing and harassing as the other way around. Four letter words (and some five and six letter ones) are in bad taste for BOTH males and females to use, regardless of how badly they are misspelled for camouflage.

I don`t think anyone here really relishes abusing anyone, especially females. But when certain ``females`` and many males resort to abuse, profanity, and threats, after losing their debate, they are subject to retaliation. In retrospect, I regret and am ready to apologize for every act of retaliation where I have responded to BOTH male and female instigators in their vulgar abuse of my family and me.

Now about credibility and fairness. I commend you for stating that there is a firewall between ``volunteers`` and Chowk Staff who delete threads, erase messages, filter posts, and provide interact ratings. But, sir, this does introduce a menacing cloud of ambiguity over your stated noble intentions. Your ability to balance between your partisan emotions during the frequent altercations and your objective enforcement of Chowk guidelines as Chowk ``volunteer,`` is admirable. But, sir, even in Pakistan, the generals have often kept their uniforms on while serving in civilian roles and they don`t pretend to be Jeffersonian. Even if your role as ``volunteer,`` is to merely clean the restrooms at Chowk, you must be privy to all kinds of inside information, perhaps even administrative passwords scribbled on the walls of the stalls. Now, do you understand what I mean by ``YahaaN ke chor heN chowkidar?``

You must admit that having Chowk Staff delete perfectly polite threads and messages, while leaving intact, just a line below the erased material, threads in BOLD that include the vernacular for copulation, is rather a strange enforcement of your lofty guidelines. While not as sinister a practice but unfair at best is the success of your material, consisting of very bad poetry and this ``fine`` example of prose, getting published, while other applicants don`t even merit a response.

It is very obvious that there is an ``inside track`` at Chowk that provides an unfair advantage for Chowk ``insiders`` at the detriment of the general audience. I support your efforts in removing these lingering doubts that definitely dilute the credibility of an otherwise effective medium. I am sure that this was NOT the intention of the genuinely egalitarian founders of Chowk.

Actually, it should be ``commas; always use commas, within sentences, ...`` (extra comma after ``sentences``). Commas have three common uses, as we can see by looking at Nehru`s famous speech:

``At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.``

(1) Commas can be used to separate a list of dependent clauses. In the phrase ``At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom``, the phrase ``India will awake to life and freedom`` is qualified by the preceding two phrases. Therefore the phrase ``India...`` is separated from the preceding two phrases by commas.

(2) Commas can be used to separate a list of things. In this case, ``and`` should always be used with the last thing. In Nehru`s speech, this is the way the commas in the phrase ``when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation...`` are used; they describe three things that have happened at this moment.

The same is true of most (not all) of the commas from Churchill`s famous speech below (though strictly speaking, there is a grammatical mistake, since there is no ``and`` after the last comma - proving Nehru`s English grammar was better than Churchill`s)

``We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills``

(3) Comma pairs can also be used to set off a parenthetical expression. A parenthetical expression is a side thought that either is not part of the main thought or qualifies the main thought. In Nehru`s speech, I have replaced the comma pairs used parenthetically with ( and ).

``A moment comes (which comes but rarely in history) when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation (long suppressed) finds utterance.``

Detection of the parenthetical commas in Churchill`s speech is left as an exercise for the reader.
