Religion always ends up being anti humanity.......the degree of anti humanity depends on its ideology at its adherents........
The character or lack of the adherents play a key role too. Thus, Religion should not have any place in state affairs.
Democracy and South Asians are lethal mix....like a razor in a monkey`s hand.
There are no checks and balances....
In US religious right also triumphed over other parties; yet there is enough counterbalance to save the state or cause only temporary damage.....unlike NWFP..........

Trust me - the monkeys in the Pakistani establishment would never allow the MMA actions in NWFP to be replicated in the Pakistani Punjab.

Re: # 3
They can do whatever they want with that hellhole. Afghanistan can have it for all I care but if the Mullahs try and pull that shit in Karachi or Punjab I`m getting out my hunting rifle...

It should also include a ban on wearing RDX around one`s waist.

Omar,
`` Towards a shackled society, perhaps``
Why perhaps? If NWFP or Pakistan continues on this path, your future is nothing but shackles & chains ..

Also a ban on `visiting temples` and `travel` by subway train. Blowing up one`s person should be declared blasphemy. By the way those who `visit` Hindu temples should be declared Kafirs.

A law passed by a democratic parliament should not be overturned because some disagree with it. It can only be overturned if it violates the constitution. This article should have made a case on how exactly the constitution is violated by this law.

``Both said that the religio-political alliance was elected precisely on an Islamization platform and that the MMA government in the NWFP was only keeping the promise that it had made at the time of elections.
This line has been used consistently by Akram Durrani’s government, and from a strictly technical point of view, cannot really be challenged. ``
Not if it goes against the Constitution of the Country and does not violate any international Human Rights conventions that are in place.
I think Pakistanis are better off without this province. Why not jettison it and be done?

I agree with khurram # 8.
Mullahs have as much right to gaining power democratically and implementing their version of the perfect society as do the liberals.
If they are really serious about the issues, then liberals should look within and think about why they lose to religious people in the first place.
But if Pakistani liberals are anything like the Indian liberals, don`t put too much trust in their abilities or willingness to address any real issues.

So it would be Balochistan next and then Sindh. You don’t give up part of your country because of some bigots.
See what happened in India 60 years ago they gave up too easily and still regret it.
This is a political struggle and must be fought in NWFP and other parts of Pakistan or you give up the whole country to scoundrels.

Well done Omar- this is the latest assault on a modern Pakistan by the tribal feudal order......I think the hour of reckoning for Mush`s Pakistan is going to be this Hasba bill and how he ensures that it does not go through.
#15 Posted by ballukhan on July 21, 2005 1:46:24 am
As I have reiterated many times , the enemy is within and we fail to see him due to our religious blindness...............it is now happening every where and is bound to happen in Punjab because Pakistani society has not merely tolerated these criminals who turned jehad into a money spinner but has given them every possible encouragement.........................

Why can`t pak follow India`s example and be a secular state?.Sure, there will be flare-ups once so often(which family doesn`t fight?) but summing up,a rewarding experience for our nation(India) as a whole. Results and actions speak better than words. The results of India`s sticking to the secular theme is self evident and Pakistan sticking to it`s islamic and later jehadi theme is resonating the world over.Good luck Pakistan.Keep it up!!.
