Nuclear Fusion Reactor being built in France by ITER.


ITER is the experimental step between today’s studies of plasma physics and tomorrow`s electricity-producing fusion power plants.
It is based around a hydrogen plasma torus operating at over 100 million °C, and will produce 500 MW of fusion power.
It is an international project involving The People`s Republic of China, the European Union and Switzerland (represented by Euratom), Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, and the United States of America, under the auspices of the IAEA.
It is technically ready to start construction and the first plasma operation is expected in 2016.
ITER is to be constructed in Europe, at Cadarache, near Aix-en-Provence, France.

Science is generally regarded as a ‘holy cow’

Hmm...I`d like to test this statement, it sounds very...um...sorry, I can`t say. This is very good in a el-loggero-se-habla-with-the-truckero-y-se-ponen-de-acuerdo-con-otro-driver-de-la- conpentencia-y way, if that makes any sense. Thumbs up!

How about Cold Fusion experiments in 90`s. Or is it `Cold Confusion Experiments?`` Does any body about the originators of the idea?

Just when you had my interest aroused, you leave us hanging – did she or didn’t she – fake it, I mean? Oh well. A story for the future, perhaps!

Most people feel that scientific research has certain built-in checks and balances. For one thing, any topic of research will start with a literature review, then building upon one or more aspects of what is the current state of the art – which means that one has to have a working prototype (whether a product or a theoretical model) of what others have already produced – in place – before one can come up with improvements of own – and an inability to actually produce such a working prototype will immediately raise questions regarding a need to closely examine the original work. Hence the self-correcting overall progress!

Of course, it won’t work if the topic of research is so “out of the way” that nobody is probably likely to try to repeat it. Also, a lot of current research is proprietary to commercial entities or is classified by government! (I wonder what happens with such research – a lot of duplication or some kind of limited collaboration among peers?)

A lot of scientific espionage also occurs – not just among countries (in fact far less among countries), more among commercial competitors. “Reverse Engineering” is a very popular technique to figure out what makes a competitor’s product tick.

And then, of course, there is the issue of “priority” (who got there first) in the days of the internet!
