Re: #25
Behram,
I think you missed my point. I do not disgree with the contribution of Zorastrianism to Christrianity and Judaism. And I am also aware of the fact that Iranian Muslims are proud of their Zoroastrian heritage (My girlfriend was one of them).
My point is of the culture, which is different and larger than the sum of the people who comprise it. History points to the fact that ancient Zoroastrianism was very significant and influential. But the present definitely says the opposite. Why?
I have many Parsi friends, and what I find is that they do not follow the original Parsi customs and traditions. They have mingled well, assimilated with their environments. Good for them ...... bad for the Parsi culture.
Almost all my Parsi friends don`t dress up in their dresses, don`t talk their talk, don`t read their scriptures, don`t follow their traditions and customs and don`t even know much about it. What do you expect a culture to do, than perish if there is no one to carry it forward?

Respectfully,
Samir Shaikh

Feroz,

Sorry, Manekshaw retired in Jan 1973 (although, technically, as a Field Marshall, he can never `retire`) as COAS. The COAS during the Emergency was T. N. Raina, who served as COAS from May `75 to May `78, during the time of the Emergency (1975-77). Manekshaw told Indira Gandhi to keep her nose out of Army business when she was telling him to attack E. Pakistan in May 1971 and the Army wasn`t ready. Its still commendable that he could, and did, stand up to her.

Re: # 40

Its interesting that on your list mr rsridhar, many of the names you quote as being parsis are in fact of mixed lineage, thus in the eyes of the parsi traditionalists, (with their inbred genetic deformities they literally boast about to illustrate their racial purity) these people are in fact imposters!! yet mixing with outsiders is surely the only way forward, as i will explain below.

1) JRD Tata was born in the 9th arrondissement in paris (where he was buried too - too impure for the vultures) and his mother was a froggy called suzanne.

2) Feroz Gandhi - i think (unless its just RSS propoganda) his mother was a parsi called Gandhe and his father a certain Nawab Khan, making the child a muslim because parsis cannot mix, particularly when its the father who is the outsider. can anyone confirm or deny this? it certainly would further enhance the gandhi clan`s claims to represent all of india!!

3) John Abraham is half catlic, half irani (not strictly a parsi, but a later influx of zoroastrians from persia)

4) Neville Wadia (though not on your list, he s certainly usually included on the famous parsi list). his family owns bombay dyeing. i think he had some irish ancestor, was born in liverpool, converted to christianity (which also excludes you for ever from being a true parsi in the traditionalist view) and then went on to marry Jinnah`s daughter, herself born of a muslim father and parsi mother.

in addition to this list, many parsis, judging from their typically indian features, surely have indian ``blood`` in them somewhere. In any case i think that its ridiculous to be so obsessed by ones racial purity. there is nothing about this in the few remaining zoroastrian scriptures (even though traditionalists try to twist avestan translations to find something) -its basically a consequence of contact with india and its own caste system.

to answer Farzana`s original question, in order to play a role in society, the first step is to actually exist!

I think there are about 65000 parsis in bombay, the frightening part is that the vast majority of them are over 65, meaning that numbers will rapidly fall within one generation). Typical parsi men and women study extensively, marry late, divorce early and are partially excluded if they ``marry out``. add to that the growing number of birth defects and genetic diseases , unmarried people and childless couples, and the future is pretty bleak.

Accepting those who marry out and their children is not just an issue to debate (its been on the agenda for over a century, since Jrd tata`s father took the parsi panchyat to court at the turn of the last century over his French wife), its now the ONLY option for any sort of survival into the latter part of this century.
comments from any traditionalists around??

re: article
Parsees do not lead a ``ghetto`` existence. They are very much the part of diaspora in India. That was the sense i got during my 1 year stay in Bombay many years ago. They are faced with a tough decision: procreate or perish. Being a very small minority, they are trying to preserve their own unique culture in the best way possible.
Many years ago, JRD Tata married a Hindu girl and was banned from entering the Fire Temple. Undeterred, he built his own temple! He is still considered a Parsee.
Parsee contributions completely overshadown the contributions of any other minority group.
Some famous Parsees:
1. Dadabhai Naoroji, the fredom fighter and also called the Grand Old man of India
2. Sam Manekshaw
3. JRD Tata: industrialist: TATA empire is into everything: Cars, Steel, Power, IT (Tata Consultancy) etc etc. A true nationbuilder
4. Homi Bhaba: nuclear scientists who kickstarted India`s nuclear journey
5. Zubin Mehta, the internationally renouned Conductor. I think he is currently with Israeli Philharmonic and had served New York Philharmonic with distinction prior to that.
6. Farookh Engineer: the former cricketer, now settled in England
7. Rohinton Mistry: a famous writer
8. Soli Sorabjee: former Attorney General of India
9. Feroz Gandhi: married Indira Priyadarshini and gave her the last name Gandhi. Many in the West think of Indira Gandhi as related to the Mahatma with the same last name. Not so.
10. Bejan Daruwala who is famous for his astrological predictions (i must confess with a little bit of embarassment i used to read his columns regularly when i was living in India!)

While on the subject of Parsees, let us not forget Freddie Mercury, the British Rock Star. He too was a Parsee.
Is John Abraham, the Bollywood actor, a Parsee too? Name suggests he is a christian but methinks he is a Parsee.

NHK,

{{I think they have been very sensible. Their eviction from Iran was not a pleasant experience. So instead of fighting against great odds of majorities, they chose to keep quiet , live peacefully and prosper. Which they have done.}}

OK..you are right...but with quite a bit of British-butt-lickin``...if I may humbly add...
not that there`s anything WRONG with butt-licking; mind-you....I mean your Paki leaders have historically made Amrikan & Saudi butt-lickin` both an art & a science....

{{Since they do not preach and believe in conversions - and not marry outside, their numbers are now indeed dangerously low.}}

like certain brahmin-feminazi-bawa-wannabe say...``BOOOO!`` khattttey angoor! they DESERVE to get extinct if they dont make an ``attitude-adjustment``!...bhaad mein gaya..unki is-snobbish piety!..

Moral of the story...``NEVER tick off brahmin-feminazi-bawa-wanabe(s)!`` lol
.

{{So it goes to the great credit of Parsis to have kept themselves sublimely peaceful and tolerant through all the history. They are good people by all accounts.}}

Yaaada! yaaada!! yaaada!!! Point taken...but some of those anachronistic, pre-partition generation bawa old GOATS & GOAT(eses) deserve a good spanking!...better yet, they deserve to do bawadom a huuuuge favor & leave this earth & let the children of Zoahraster have some INDIAN genes!....I mean... They have portraits of the British Queen (that uuuugggly b*tch Lizzie) & say ``Aaaapro Rani!!``

Bal Thackrey!!!!...are you listening?!... sic `em!!!....

{But they need to start marrying outside - for their own survival so that they are not left behind only in the pages of history}.

Feroze & Fuzair,

Goddamned Persian...er...wannabes! guys...guys....calm down!:)
The important thing to remember here is- an INDIAN General told the b*tch to go F**k-off!

The Indian military has NEVER taken over India--Lord knows they could have made PLENTY of excuses to do so.....like ...a..a..certain... ``mashoor world-famous military``....

understand this....DONT underestimate the patriotism of the dumb Indian junta...(just because you hear Kashmir all the time)...the Indian military has EARNED the respect of the billion junta (most of whom are under the age of 30)....unlike a certain shameless, feckless military that has DEMANDED respect...at gun-point....

One last thing... b*tch-Indira Gandhi had a VERY soft spot for bawas....she MARRIED one, remember?!!

Feroz,

{Hello Shankar sahib! Hope all is well, with you and the family.}

My feminazis & I are fine...thank-you. I trust the slightly wieerd combination of Allah/Zohraster is keeping you & your lovely wife, in the pink of health! btw...Are they other additions to your family?

Our own ylh & bibi have blessed Pakistan with a baby girl!!!!

Phew! Thank Gaaaaad for the Land of the Pure!...Allah-knows there is a profusion of brainless-prepuceless (though handsome) Punjabi-Pathan-Baloch-Sindhi-Arab-vagera MEN to take your nation to incredible heights of international infamy.

Maybe your WOMEN can save your benighted nation!:))

...but anyways...

{{Of course, there are racist undertones involved. Afterall, you should know better than most how we feel about the natives. :)}}

AHA!!! Pakda..na!!!!
What a DEVASTATING fall from the hiiiiiigggghhhh road you just walked on!:)lol

But these buggers REFUSE to leave INDIA!!! They cant LIVE without their ``native`` servants!!!

Lemme tell you...certain liberal bawas (from Bombay; ofcourse!).... are speaking out (in hushed voices) that if ``Bawadom`` continues to act sooooo hoity-toity & exclusive...they deserve to get extinct...already ``inbreeding`` has dramatically increased birth defects, diabetes, schizophrenia etc (ofcourse there will ALWAYS be half-breed bawa geniouses to sweeten India)...

However, let me illustrate my point by telling you a story that happened a month ago...after my long-postponed trip to Bombay came through....

Dr-ji (&certain other nameless brahmin-feminazi-bitches)were very very angry...because the dastoors had ``ISSUES`` about joint-hindu-Parsi-marriage rites......

``Arrey babba!``...they said...``WE are BRAHMINS!!!...WE are SUPPOSED to be the bloooooody ``superior`` class....AND....AND....these dastoor buggers act like they are BETTER THAN US yaaaa`!!``....
``Bhaaad mein gaya,unka religion!``...even their bloomin` vultures are dying of food poisoning.....GOOOOOD!!``

``Arrey! baba! ``,....they said....``SUPERIORITY aur SNOBBISHNESS ki bhi koi LIMIT hoti hai!,yaaaaa`!``

MY feminazi wife then retorts, ``serves you right! yaaaaa`!!.....you are dumb doctarnis...you were dumb enough to ``hook`` bawas doctors...

Then ensued a cat-fight, whereupon, mois & certain long-suffering bawa hubbies retired to another part of their ``castle`` to refresh our drinks.....while I explained to them that they better get their bodies CREMATED...trust me...I`d rather have my mortal remains become TOAST than be consumed by a cannabilistic senile vulture named...Roooostam!:))

{{Incidently, when you are coming over for some dhansa? :)}}

I`d looove to!...someday!...Inshahallah! ...I`m told Lahore is a lovely place to visit...by some dumb North Indian dukkar Chowk traitors (who shall remain nameless)...who went to the wrong side of the border...

OK OK...i`ll put my jingoistic patriotism aside & be bitten the evil peace-bug that infects us desis,these days....ONLY if that drunken Islam-(almost)rejecting dukkar genious philosopher hamid waves a white handerchief & sings ``khumbaya..mi..lor`!`` on Chowk...

{{Tell you what, I will adopt you and that way, you can get your wish of belong to the Parsi community. :) lol}}

I gotta better idea...YOU & the Mrs migrate to Bombay....my bawa friends here, DESPARATELY, want more half-breed bawa geniouses!:)

Best Wishes!

Blue gaze, I believe it`s your adolscence that inhibits you from understanding my comment. I did not comment on Pakistan`s infallibility. Rather, I want the general public to stop commenting on whether it should or should not exist. Same is the case for Israel. The time has come and gone for whether it should be there or not. Now we should look to create a Palestinian state. In the case of Pakistan, it is possible for there to be equality within Pakistan for all. It is a young country with many kinks to be worked out, especially in the case of women. But Inshallah I believe it is possible. Call me an idealist, but only an idealist could have independently created Pakistan.

Re: # 18

Fuzair, I am certain that it was Sam Manekshaw who was the head of the Indian army, because I remember a quote attributed to him. He had told Indira Gandhi, and I am paraphrasing, that you keep give your big nose out of the army, when she had broached the subject of army involvement during the emergency. In any case, Manekshaw refused to allow Indian army to get involved in politics. As to the heirarchy of command, you might be correct and the chief might, indeed, be a Hindu general, but I believe that Manekshaw would be the senior most officer in the Indian army in the mid-1970s and that is why Indira Gandhi went to ask for his endorsement for her idea.

Re: # 23
interesting comment. i havent read the book but i`m putting it on my list. i am familiar with the point you make re: permanence of culture but i am of the view that as long as there is even one representative of a culture left alive, as in s/he follows customs, rituals, speaks the language, dresses acordingly, etc, to whatever extent the culture can`t be proclaimed dead. terminal maybe but not dead. you can call it a mutation, but as culture is linked to the human experience it should be expected to evolve [up, down or sideways], depending on the human element.

as for measuring a culture by the effect it has had on the world at large or society in general, well it depends on your definition of terms such as the `world at large`. india`s 65000 parsis [is that the right number?] has definitely left its mark on india and while their customs might not be copied, they have successfully interacted with society in the areas they inhabit. there are communities made of larger numbers who`ve made less impact than the parsis and who`re less reognized than them. however if your definition of impact is something like the impact of coca cola on the world, then i suppose you could say that a few thousand parsis dont make a culture.

FV-ji,

Re participation in politics by Parsis:

Don`t tell me you have forgotten persons such as Minoo Masani (twice elected Member of Parliament and erstwhile member of the Constituent Assembly) and Piloo Mody (Member of the Rajya Sabha). Both were outspoken in their views. Masani went from being a Socialist to becoming a founder of the Swatantra Party. Mody was arrested in a midnight raid by Indira Gandhi after the proclamation of the Emergency.

The story has been making the rounds that initially Parsis asked for representation in the Parliament through an appointed member a la the Anglo-Indians but were dissuaded from pressing their case. It is a good thing too since they along with the Indian electorate proved that the only thing that matters in who gets elected is his appeal to the populace and not whether he belongs to the majority party (at that time the Congress) or the majority religion.... a fact which was lost on another prominent person from Bombay who would not have been elected dogcatcher and so had to migrate to another country so he could become its leader by acclamation.
