What is your objective here? You are a Muslim writing only about India and its shortcomings.
Once in a while do something else, otherwise you sound like official Pakistani media.

FYI, There are plenty of Dalit parties to work on the cause of Dalits, in fact 20 years from now, there would be a Dalit PM in India.

Try writing about rapes in Pakistan and Ahmedis, their sufferings are more than dalits in India.

``We Dalits are like animals.``

Sure you are animals. Its just that 50% of the seats in professional engineering and medical colleges and 50% of the cushy government jobs are reserved for you. So you can basically score 50% in your exams and still have better chances of landing a given coveted college seat or a government job than an upper caste monster who gets 90% in the same exam.

``The moment we are born we are on our own.``

Sure you are on your own. Its just that 50% of the seats in professional engineering and medical colleges and 50% of the cushy government jobs are reserved for you. So you can basically score 50% in your exams and still have better chances of landing a given college seat or a government job than an upper caste monster who gets 90% in the same exam.

`` There is no support system. ``

Sure there is no support systam. Its just that 50% of the seats in professional engineering and medical colleges and 50% of the cushy government jobs are reserved for you. So you can basically score 50% in your exams and still have better chances of landing a given college seat or a government job than an upper caste monster who gets 90% in the same exam.

``We are constantly made aware that we are apart.``

But then , of course you are a class apart. After all , 50% of the seats in professional engineering and medical colleges and 50% of the cushy government jobs are reserved for you. So you can basically score 50% in your exams and still have better chances of landing a given college seat or a government job than an upper caste monster who gets 90% in the same exam.

Re: # 5

Can you back up your claims with some verifiable sources? As far as I know the total population of Dalits in India is roughly the same as that of Muslims i.e. somewhere between 116 - 180 millions. From your numbers it does not make sense to reserve a 50% quota for only 15% of the population.

It is common practice for Middle Eastern Sheiks to arrive in Hyderabad, duly marry four wives after paying ``dowry`` to their fathers, have sex with them and discard them by pronouncing Talaq. Perfectly legal in Islam, according to the Maulvi who performs the marriage. The rest of the world defines it as prostitution.

Indian Muslim women should not stand for elections, but if they do they should only campaign in a burqa according to a fatwa issued by Muslim religious leaders.

Indian Muslim women are not allowed to build and worship in their own mosque in Tamilnadu by local Muslim leaders.

Muslim religious leaders are debating Sania Mirza`s court attire now. Expect a fatwa soon requiring her to compete in a burqa.

As they say, physician, heal thyself.

Sniper-sahib, you first have to be able to get some basic education before getting a seat in professional college/IAS etc. Right?

The problem is most dalits are not even getting a chance to finish elementary school. And most indians dont seem to care very much about this. This is the real tragedy, not your whining about quotas and other stuff.

Farzana: this mildly constructive article would have been enhanced by noting the following books by Tupe:

1. Khaai 1988
2 Khuli 1991
3 Zulva 1986

Zulva was made into a movie a few years ago:

The muhurat of the Marathi film Jogava was recently held at Hotel Avion, Mumbai. Present on the occasion were chief minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Pramod Navalkar along with many other eminent personalities. Jogava is produced by Sonal Raj.

The film is based on writer Uttam Bandu Tupe’s novel Zhulva and as the name suggests, it relates to the alms collected by the Devadasis as their daily wage. Rashmi Bade presents the film under the banner of Ankur Films. It is directed by Shreeram Bade of Janta Janardan fame who has also penned the screenplay. Dialogues by Shreeram Bade and Uttam Bandhu Tupe, lyrics by Indrajeet Bhalerao, music by Devadatta Sable, art by Keshav Thakur and cinematography by Sanjay Jadhav are the other credits. The film stars Sayaji Shinde and Amruta Subhash.

By the way , Jats are not `upper caste`. Brahmins are upper caste. Jats come under the middle castes or other backward castes category. What is striking about today`s India is that any and all atrocities commited on the dalits are actually carried out by middle caste and other backward caste hindus like Jats in Haryana , Yadavs in UP and Bihar , Kurmis in Bihar, Gowdas in Karnataka , Marathas in Maharashtra , Thevars in Tamil Nadu etc.

So any caste based atrocities in India today are carried out by low caste hindus on lower caste hindus. This is a vital difference.

Why is this happening ? Thats because caste system and the assorted societal discrimination only exists in rural India. Upper caste hindus have for long given up on rural India. My father`s generation left the villages of India enmass and headed to the cities. Gave up village land holdings and farming , got educated and took up corporate jobs. (My generation is giving up on India for good and heading enmass for US and Australia. But thats another story.)

So a vacuum is left behind. Who fills the vacuum ? Low caste hindus like Yadavs , Kurmis , Jats and Gowdas. They are the new brahmins. They have the power and the money and even have reservations in government jobs and colleges - but not the enlightenment. Drunk with power they carry out atrocities against lower caste hindus.

Infact in Gujarat , during the post-Godhra riots , in the villages , most of the killings and rapes of muslims were carried out by dalits and tribals. Because muslims there had emerged as the neo-brahmins by filling the vacuum left behind by the mass migration of brahmins and other upper caste Gujarathi hindus to the cities and towns....and took vicious delight in insulting and humiliating the dalits. So the dalits were thirsting for revenge.

Sniper/Ranger et al.
You have fallen for the old trick. You have responded exactly the way,
the parasite author wanted you to respond ?

Infact, what is new in this article ? Nothing. Everyone in India acknowledges the
weaknesses and prejudice and Indian society is making amends in a lot of ways.
Notice the background of the authors that the parasite author quotes - that should
say something.
Hmm..take a look at this

Urstruly...over 50% of the seats in Indian colleges and jobs are reserved for low caste hindus , proportionate to their numerical strength in the population. Dalits are obviously included in the low caste hindu category....scheduled castes and scheduled tribes together get 27% of the seats and jobs , rest are taken up by other backward caste or lower caste hindus like Yadavs , Kurmis etc.

A simple google search will get you the facts. Anybody who competes for a job or an engineering/medical seat in India is aware of this.

Re: # 11

Your post made my head spin. So it means that 50% of seats are NOT reserved for Dalits (contrary to your first post) but they have a ceratin percetage from that 50% which they share with other slightly upper class hindus and people of miscelleneous religions. Your figures also mean that 50% of the Indian population is then Brahmins- this doesn`t feel right.

By the way , Urstruly , the government of the state of Andhra Pradesh recently reserved 5% of the government jobs and college seats for MUSLIMS ...in addition to the 50% reservation already existing for low caste hindus.

The only people who are discriminated against in India are the so-called `upper caste` hindus like me . We dont get anything handed out to us by the state and the only thing that we can lean on is our educational qualifications. Even that needs to be top notch because although 60% in the IIT-JEE will easily get a dalit or an other backward caste hindu a seat in the IITs , even 95% won`t guarantee an upper caste kid a seat there.

India is hell for upper caste hindus like me and most of us only have one wish - to get the f out of here and settle down in US. We are like how jews used to be in nazi Germany , discriminated and oppressed against by the state , and yet villified by the the general society as the oppressors.

Things will now come to a boil when the low caste people - who by the way constitute the majority - push for reservation in private sector jobs. And since India is a democracy and low caste hindus enjoy numerical advantage , they will obviously get their way.

That is the day , I - the great Indian patriot - will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the anti-India folks like Arundhati Roys and Farzana Verseys and wish for the ruin , death and destruction of India.

Urstruly - an upper caste hindu does not necessarily mean a brahmin you idiot. Brahmins only constitute 2-3% of India`s population. Its another matter than we usually get the top 10% ranks in any academic contest. We are freakin smart. Put us in US or UK, we will get the top ranks there as well.

15-20 % seats are reserved for Scheduled castes and Scheduled tribes, also known as Dalits

27% are for ``other backward castes``

then their are quotas for sports persons, ex-servicemen,handicapped,freedom fighters families, etc..etc..
combined all these make up around 50% of total govt. jobs or seats in Govt. run professional colleges, but I dont know how many of these posts are filled up.

Brahmins only form a minority of the upper castes.
The so called uppercastes also include Khatris,Banias,Rajputs jutts and jats (they are officially backward only in Rajasthan)
Muslims and other religeons are also part of ``upper castes`` for this purpose.

``So it means that 50% of seats are NOT reserved for Dalits``

What that means is , Dalits and other low caste hindus can compete for 100% of the seats and jobs , 50% of which are exclusively reserved for them.
