Sorry dear temp I beg to differ with you about the meaning of ‘Farz’. When the Quran says ‘La ikraah fiddin’ it is stating a truth not a religious edict, as faith and coercion (ikraah) are two contradictory terms. Farz is an Arabic word and has been used frequently in the Quran and Hadees, but strange as it may seem, never with the rituals, even with Sallat (called ‘namaz’ by mulla). It has been used with acquisition of Ilm (knowledge) and that too in Hadees only. My point in calling Zakat voluntary was that it is not to be made recoverable indiscriminately like a ‘Jugga Tax’ but only as a prescribed ‘Saddaqa’. Hadees does quote certain instances where the prophet refused to accept zakat from a certain person as it was made from an income, which was not considered to be ‘hallal’. So we can proceed further with the discussion on the point whether Zakat is voluntary or farz only if the meaning of the term Farz is clarified by you vis-à-vis the all pervasive fundamental truth ‘La ikraah fiddin’.

My life pace has changed significantly. The principle theme is less reliance on fossil fuel generated energy. The idea is to use relatively more muscle and less machine than in the past. I now hardly ever spend even two hours on-line ...TOTAL, this is down from over 10 hours daily only three years ago. I have also retired my Palm Pilot and gone back to paper. Last week I finally threw my mobile (cell) phone in the bin (trash can) along with the chargers and car adapters. My car is also standing along the nearby country road side with a ``for sale`` sign... Only the wife drives her car any more. I ride a bike or a horse, as the case may be. Mostly I walk, rain or shine. And as you know, on this mistly little island it`s often rain. With no TV or traffic noise in the background I pay more attention to the sounds of wind and rain.

Next time you pass through this way we`ll put on our raincoats and wellies to go sheer the sheep and walk then up to the village square where five bored teenagers hang out by the bronz plack naming the locals who fell during the First World War. The old farmhouse there is now a tavern and tea room though it does not have a big sign outside. We`re mostly vegetarian but there is a butcher in the village. Unfortunately he does not carry any halal pork so don`t come during Ramadan. It won`t be kosher.

_digit #39 ah zafar…haven’t met him in over 15 years…one of the first functions i attended here .. at York U was organised by lateef owaisi and zafar bangash (then an engineer by profession)…later on my friend and mentor q-sahib introduced me to them and i ended up doing regular columns for their fortnightly…that ended when zafar fell under the influence of late dr. kalim siddiuqui and his muslim institute…they censored a couple of my columns (contrary to my understanding with them)…questioning the policies of ayatollah khoimeini…i heard he heads an islami centre up north now…

Perhaps the distinction to be made here is between a ritual and a value. The ritual is to go through the motions, like not eating, smoking, or drinking, saying all the prayers. The values are the ones that you have articulated ``piety``, ``patience``, ``tolerance``, ``empathy``, ``community`` and ``purification``. These are universal values and encouraged by good people in all religions. Why would we muslim sacrifice these values and settle for mere rituals is beyond me.

Lip service itself is feigning substance/sincerity. FEIGNING LIP SERVICE will border somewhere along `pretending to be fake`..

We lived next to this old couple once, at Iftaar they would open their apartment`s door to ``let the angels in``, and all the kids in the building of ALL ages would rush over, go directly to their dining table, wow what a table, it looked like a palace feast... delicious cakes, pastries, sandwiches without the ugly edges, samosas, those little stars made outta rice. sigh. I went a few times and came back with a stuffed face. When Ma found out she gave me a hiding. Said those people don`t have enough to eat for themselves and they let you urchins eat their whole month`s store in one day.
