tahmed 276,
The indian society is against bride burning and that is why it is illegal to kill any one including brides.
Now mister tahmed, do you support honour killing as approved per hoodood laws of pakistan.
I do not expect an answer from you, but irrespective of what you willsay, teh pak society approves of hoodood laws and that is why it is there in pakistan. It is supported by you and teh educated because you never dare to say anything against it.

About circumcision
Just my 2 cents ... someone may correct this:
It is true that few decades back it was thought prepuce (front part of the penis) was unnecessary and CAN be responsible for prepucial cancer. So, medical practice recommended circumcision. Most Americans of last generation (including baby boomers) were circumcised irrespective of religion. However, just like the story of tonsils, now the theory is reversed and it is believed that prepuce is not responsible for cancer. So recommendation: up to you ...if you want for religious reasons, do it. Otherwise you need not.
God was not that stupid to give it in the first place if it was not needed. For a biological scientist like me, this part would have been eliminated from the animal kingdom if it was totally unncessary. Evolution works that way.
But, what baffles me is that Abraham offered this piece of anatomy to GOD! Could not he find something else? If you really wanted to show your dedication and respect, give one of your fingers (pinky from left palm?) or a small toe. I find it really insulting to Allah saying.. take this and be happy, I have done my duty. Don`t we use this saying as an insult?

Scientist Sahib… the circumcision doesn’t cut off any skin, it just rolls it back so the head can be seen. It is not mandatory in Islam, it is optional. Another name for Circumcisions is “SuntaN” or the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim. For Arabs it should be mandatory, as they can afford to have a little piece (even big piece) taken off. For Desis with small peepees, it should be optional. Every little bit counts.

i have read that initially mohammed what to protray himself as a prophet of jews but was not accepted by them.
it seems he built islam on the existing practices of the region at that time. like adopting christian beliefs, jewish customs.

Most probably for similar reason...pork is un-kosher for jews, too. You could think of it as the process of ``sanskritisation`` among Arabs to emulate the brahmins of the middle east, i.e., Jews, the chosen people.
I do not know what is the religious reason behind the jewish banning of pork. It might be nothing more than the unhygenic eating habits of pigs. Many scholars have pointed out that the Hindu shunning of beef has its origin in the over-eating of the cow by earlier Indians who feared an extinction of the bovine animal who was so essential for the agrarian economy. These commonsense practices were perhaps made religious taboos for greater acceptance.

I don`t understand why on God`s green earth we needed American help in the disaster area in the first place. Americans are a big liability and a security risk for Pakistan. Valuable resources, which could be used to help quake victims has been reserved to just provide security to these people. According to a news report Americans have established their camp in the center of Muzaffarabad and no human being is allowed to tresspass with in one mile radius of this area. How many security personnel would be required to maintain this perimeter? Just imagine the inconvinience this would have been causing to the local survivors and rescue workers. I think Americans have made their public relations point that they are a benevolent nation. Thank you very much. Now go home.

Turly, do you understand why on god’s earth do you live in the US and not in Kashmir?
When you move back to your disease infested sewer, your rhetoric might make some sense.

Re: # 286
I think you should calm down and think logically and reasonably. It is an undeniable fact that Americans have brought untold misery upon the people of this region through war and aggression - and that is true for people living with in Pakistani territory and in surrounding countries. Just imagine if a US chopper is downed today, it would be a horrible PR disaster for Pakistan and devistate the image its dictators are trying to project in the West. So if you do the cost benefit analysis, it is a lose-lose deal for Paksitan in all respects. American people are murderously prejudiced against the people belonging to the Muslim faith and do not hesitate or think twice before destroying the whole nations and countries if it doesn`t conform to their world view. So it is in best interest of Pakistan to thank Americans for their help; give their General a medal of honor or something and send them packing ASAP.

From Aha_Snark to Godot: “I responded to harimau`s posts because clear rebuttals and observations on the points that he made are far more effective than responding in kind.”
From Aha_Snark to Harimau (there goes the Listerine again...aaarrrgh): “ How?” and “Are you saying that India should treat it`s minorities the way (you think that) Islamic countries treat theirs? Or is the reasoning that X Islamic Country treats it`s minorities badly, so genocide, ethnic cleansing and religious segregation is just parity?”
From Harimau (.....Listerine) to Aha_Snark: “ Next time a foreigner makes u thankless hijras` mothers warm their beds.....let them do it.....next time someone wants to hummilliate you by taking your sisters let em......next time a hindian gets circumcized, let em....... you thankless hijrass deserve it”
You see, Aha_Snark, that’s what you get for being polite and rational. You cannot reason with ignorance and hate. You either close your nose and pass the sewer hurriedly, or through back a brick. You probably are too new at Chowk and seem to think everyone here is educated, enlightened, rational, logical, well-meaning, and caring for humanity, and that you can get into a meaningful and logical debate with them bordering on decency. Stick around and you will find out. However, I think you have gotten a taste already. Better go wash your mouth with Listerine.
Jay
“Godot, find out what education is about, and I am not talking about the mdrassa type that you have learned.”
Why don’t you tell us, Jay, which eminent school you attended and the education you received there that has chained you in a tunnel of hate?

re: godot:
Well, I`ve been here since 1997 so I`ve seen stuff like this happen tons of times. But. That does not detract from my point. The interactor in question has evaded every single one of my direct questions, has refused to engage on the grounds of logic and has used the filthiest terms of abuse. His posts stand exposed as baseless, indefensible ( i.e. his inability to defend what he says ) hate mongering.
To retaliate against such inarticulate invective in kind... what would that do ? What has your retaliation in kind (post # 158) achieved ? Apart from making your posts look offensive and childish ? The interactor in question is delighted to hear you abuse him - you abuse him. He abuses you. And so on.
It`s far more difficult to engage in clear and rational dialogue than it is to resort to xenophobia, racism, sexism or other forms of prejudice. And that`s amply borne out by the fact that on this board and on numerous other boards, I have cornered the interactor in question using clear logic and asked him to connect the dots or provide sources for his allegations. And I can`t remember a single time he has been able to do so.
Fascism and hate speech on this board will never be defeated by chowk staff. It will never be defeated by, as you say, ``holding your nose in front of the sewer``. It will be defeated if and only if ordinary chowkies do not indulge in violent speech, do provide sources to back up critical assertions, and do, quietly but determinedly oppose hate speech when they see it.
cheers,
Aha_Snark

Then why bother? As I said before, you cannot reason with ignorance and hate.
“It`s far more difficult to engage in clear and rational dialogue than it is to resort to xenophobia, racism, sexism or other forms of prejudice.”
That’s why you rarely see an intense but healthy debate at Chowk. It’s a constant Pak-Bharat bickering as to who stinks more.
“on this board and on numerous other boards, I have cornered the interactor in question using clear logic and asked him to connect the dots or provide sources for his allegations. And I can`t remember a single time he has been able to do so.”
Welcome to the club, and don’t hold your breath.
“hate speech...will be defeated if and only if ordinary chowkies do not indulge in violent speech, do provide sources to back up critical assertions, and do, quietly but determinedly oppose hate speech when they see it.``
You will never get a decent response from the likes of the individual in question no matter how high a ground you hold. I rather keep my nose closed. If you noticed, I have not addressed the individual in question. I usually don’t respond to sewer posts and the swine that dwells in it.
But I do agree with you. We can have a meaningful and healthy argument without necessarily having to agree with each other. You sound like an intelligent and a decent person. In a disagreement, I look forward to crossing swords with you down the road without having to get involved in insults and profanities.
