40,000 Indians in UAE to return home

PTI[ MONDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2002 12:24:43 AM ]

DUBAI: Around 40,000 Indian expatriates in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are expected to head for home following the ultimatum to illegal immigrants to leave under a four-month amnesty starting January or face stringent action if caught without proper residency documents.

The amnesty issued last week by the interior ministry allows illegal immigrants to return home without facing penalties and was intended to correct the demographic imbalance in the country.

Illegal residents will be deported at the expense of their embassies and consulates and help will be provided only in limited cases where it is proved that the individuals have no money to pay for their passage.

The Indian Airlines has announced discounted fares for this purpose.

The Indian embassy said that it was co-ordinating with voluntary organisations and leading Indians to garner finanial help for those availing the amnesty.

Other embassies, including those of Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, are also gearing up for the rush during the amnesty.

``There is an urgent need to regulate the labour market and illegal residence in the UAE,`` media here quoted an interior ministry official as saying.

Hundreds of illegal immigrants are behind bars for over-staying and they will be the first to be deported under the amnesty, he said.

I really don`t have time for a lengthy post so I will make this short. I would a like a honest answer from muslims here ... If hindus hate you, dalits hate you ( include me ), other backward castes ( OBCs ) hate you, sikhs hate you, Serbs hate you, Russians hate you, jews hate you, british hate you ( remember Oldham ? ), americans hate you then there may be something fundamentally wrong with the way muslims conduct themselves OR do you guys say that the fault lies with everyone else but muslims.

- thanks for thoughtful answers

Sri

And smartie Chap Sri is a Jew ,Christian,British,American,Dalit ,OBC (who knows he may be ilegitimate too)Serbs ...what not to know that

NEW DELHI, 27 August — At long last on Aug. 18, the Ministry of Railways has released the reservation list of the ill-fated S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express with a self-indicting analysis.

According to the railways, of the 59 passengers booked, three had canceled the booking and four have not been traced (presumably because of some defect in, or loss of, reservation slip) and 32 had actually traveled and reached their destination.

Vote for bigotry
Arab News Editorial 16 December 2002

If the election that has just taken place in Gujarat, where the BJP has been re-elected by a landslide, had happened in Europe or elsewhere in the West, there would be an international outcry, with demands for a boycott of the country and that something be done about it.

The BJP in Gujarat has its hands steeped in blood. It presided over an orgy of violence earlier this year in which between 1,000 and 2,000 people, mainly Muslims, were hacked to death or burned alive. Though the wave of violence was, initially, explained as a spontaneous reaction to another revolting crime, the torching of a trainload of Hindu militants in which 59 people died, credible evidence has come to light to show that there was nothing spontaneous about the riots. It was planned by bigots, with Chief Minister Narendra Modi, his henchmen, and the government machinery helping and directing them. They encouraged local BJP activists to whip up Hindu resentment with calls for revenge, and then, when the mobs appeared, provided no protection to their Muslim victims whatsoever.

Gujarat is Indian democracy’s shame. That a government that preaches religious hate and exploits communal fears could be rewarded with another term in office after what it has done is almost beyond comprehension. This is elected bigotry. It is the evidence that when populism is brought into play, democracy itself is poisoned. Populism is its Achilles’ heel.

One must hope no more blood will be shed, although in the wake of the vote, there have already been communal clashes. Probably this time riot police will be deployed to prevent any further immediate violence, because now there is nothing further to be gained politically from it. But it is bound, sooner or later, to happen again. The levers of power in Gujarat are in the hands of a bunch of fascists who use violence whenever they think it politically useful. And they have their friends in Delhi.

The BJP win is a major blow for India’s secularists. It is a particularly shattering blow for the opposition Congress party. It has made advances elsewhere in India. It is true that since Gujarat has been the bastion of bigotry for over 30 years, voting for the BJP and its predecessors most of the time, this week’s vote is not so surprising. Nonetheless, Gujarat was a test Congress should have won. It did not because it did not have a cohesive presence or a credible message.

In the minds of too many Indians, Congress lacks leadership and it lacks ideas. That was in evidence in Gujarat. Its performance was pathetic. Instead of setting its own agenda, it tried to emulate the BJP by constantly proclaiming its Hindu credentials. There was no point trying to out-BJP the BJP. It was bound to fail — as fail it did.

If Congress learns that one lesson, then something worthwhile will have come out of this appalling result. India needs an opposition party that works. At the moment it does not have one. Congress — in many people’s minds, still tainted by corruption and wedded to red tape and government control — is the nearest thing to an institutionalized political vacuum that India has ever seen. It has to start coming up with coherent ideas and a leader who is not just keeping the seat warm until her children are ready to take over. Otherwise, the BJP will continue in office no matter how much violence it stirs up.

Tension over killing of Islamic leader’s brother

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2002 01:34:13 AM ]

PATNA: Communal tension flared up in Alamganj after a Maulana Ghani Nadvi was hacked to death by unidentified miscreants on Monday evening. Senior SP Sunil Kumar and City SP O N Bhaskar have rushed to the spot with police reinforcement.

Chief minister Rabri Devi, while condemning the brutal murder of Ghani Nadvi, has directed the district administration to book the assailants immediately and appealed to the local residents to maintain peace.

Maulana Ghani Nadvi was the elder brother of chief of Emarat-e-Ahle-Hadis Maulana Abdul Sami Nadvi. The criminals entred the house of 82-year-old Ghani Nadvi around 7 pm and covered his face and then beheaded him. Informed sources said that the deceased Ghani advi would be buried around 12 am on Tuesday night.

The general secretary of the Patna district Congress Committee Gufran Azam has demanded a judicial inquiry into the killing of Ghani Nadvi. As the news of killing of Ghani Nadvi spread in Alamganj, the residents went berserk and started pelting stones besides blocking the road traffic in support of their demand for early arrest of the miscreants.

The police officials claimed that the situation was tense but well under con-trol. The district administration has also stationed Riot Control Vehicle ``Vajra`` and put it on maximum alert. Till late on Monday night the situation was tense. Meanwhile, the residents grievously injured a criminal identified as Jhulan for making an abortive bid to loot a garment shop in Kankerbagh on Monday. A gang of four criminals intruded into the shop and looted cash at gun point. When the criminals were fleeing the shopkeeper raised an alarm. It was with the help of local residents Jhulan was caught.

He was given thorough beating as a result of which he fell unconscious. Jhulan, informed sources said, was rushed to the Patna Medical College Hospital where he is reportedly in a critical state.

According to report from Barh, notorious criminal Anant Singh, who was wanted in several cases of kidnapping, murder and dacoity, surrendered before the district court on Monday.
