Ally your identity crisis is understandable.

All foreign born or bred ,no matter what they are called abcd ,here or Bradfordian in england dont know to incorporate your Indianess or Pakistaniness. It would have been a heartening & commendable act for a NRI to see his son go back to Delhi .

You are not unique in having a hindu relative.Far many Indian muslims & some Pakistani have had relatives from across the border .Its not only about religion. During the Gujjuriots hindu who were married to muslims were not spared.

I think you havent touched on the real problem betwen the two country ..... calling yourself from Mohommed Ghouse to Mike Ghouse is a obvious & blatant attempt to suck up hardly changes attitudes.

Commentary: A wake-up call for India from China
*******************************************

William Pesek Jr. Bloomberg News
Tuesday, December 3, 2002

Singapore`s prime minister likes to describe Asia as a jumbo jet. Southeast
Asia`s 10 or so biggest economies are the base, while India forms one wing
and China and other East Asian countries form the other.
.
The trouble with Goh Chok Tong`s metaphor is the reliability of at least one
of Asia`s wings: the Indian one. While its engine is hardly sputtering by
global standards, India is being left behind by China`s high-flying economy.
It is quite a wake-up call for the world`s second most populous country, and
it could be good news for investors.
.
If ever there was a time for India to fret over its role in Asia`s economy,
it was in Cambodia at last month`s summit meeting of the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations. It was India`s first time to be invited, and Prime
Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee found himself playing second fiddle to Chinese
officials who had the spotlight. The scene was an apt reminder of how China
has raced forward economically. Twenty years ago, India and China were close
rivals, both grappling with how to raise their mushrooming populations out of
poverty. These days, China`s meteoric rise is spotlighting India`s economic
backwardness. Anne Krueger, first deputy managing director of the
International Monetary Fund, said in New Delhi recently about India, ``There`s
a long way to go on the reform process.``
.
It used to be just the Himalayas that separated the two. Now it is the
mountains of foreign direct investment rushing to China and avoiding India
that set them apart. Beijing, quite simply, has been quicker to adopt
capitalism than has New Delhi and the Chinese economy is racing ahead. Soon,
China`s per capita income, nearly $900, may be double that of India. China`s
rise is both a crisis for India and an opportunity. It is a crisis because
India`s 1 billion people desperately need the foreign investment and trade
flows that create wealth in the age of globalization. It is an opportunity
because China may shake India out of complacency.
.
Vajpayee raised hopes about the latter point at the ASEAN meeting last month.
He arrived looking to gain duty-free access to 500 million consumers in the
ASEAN countries. But India is playing catch-up to China, which already has
begun the process of scoring zero tariffs in the region.
.
The threat of losing Southeast Asian markets to China looms large. When India
started dismantling Soviet-style controls on trade and investment in 1991,
China already had a 13-year head start. Another blow came last year when
China and ASEAN said they would create a zero-duty market of 1.7 billion
people within a decade. India is desperate to catch up. It will not be easy.
China has many problems on its plate. The country`s four biggest banks are
shackled with hundreds of billions of dollars in bad loans. Its economy also
needs to grow at least 7 percent to maintain stability as tens of millions
lose their jobs during the transition to capitalism.
.
But China`s more aggressive embrace of market economics has paid off. By
comparison, India`s bureaucracy has moved glacially to lift barriers to
trade, investment and entrepreneurship. The reasons are highly debatable. One
explanation many observers offer is that India`s cultural desire for economic
equality exceeds China`s.
.
All this has manifested itself in a widening gulf between the two economies.
Anyone who last visited China in 1995 would be shocked to see the networks of
modern freeways, state-of-the-art airports and efficient ports built since
then. The projects are helping China become a dominant force in international
trade.
.
India is trying to do the same - spending $11.2 billion by 2007 on 13,145
kilometers (8,150 miles) of new roads, for example - but it has a ways to go.
Investors still gripe about how India`s aging airports, congested ports and
dodgy roads are holding back the economy. Such complaints explain why India
is attracting scant investment, while China is attracting even more than the
United States.
.
On paper, India`s economy does not look so bad. It is growing 5.5 percent
this year, has a growing middle class and boasts some stellar industries such
as software that have created remarkable prosperity in cities like Hyderabad
and Bangalore.
.
These pockets of success say much about the problems undermining the broader
economy. India`s computer-related companies benefit from reduced government
regulation. New Delhi acted quickly to encourage start-ups and allow market
economics to rule the industry. If only it would do the same elsewhere in the
economy.
.
To compete with China for Asia`s business, India will have to cut tariffs and
relax other barriers on trade and foreign investment. At the moment, India is
twice as closed to trade as China. With tariff rates averaging 35 percent,
India`s economy is among the world`s most restrictive.
.
The good news is that the government is beginning to lower tariffs. A growing
number of states are allowing companies more opportunities to own land so
they can expand. And privatization efforts have increased in recent years, a
trend that is gaining attention from investors around the globe. China`s rise
is leaving India little choice in the matter. Its massive supply of cheap,
skilled labor and low land costs are giving New Delhi an abrupt wake-up call
and prompting action. Let`s hope investors don`t catch India snoozing again.

Can we please get a movie about Indian-American expatriates which does not revolve around sex, sex and sex? I`m not saying that its a non-issue, but surely, there are other interesting things going on, right? How about the life of a hardworking FOB who leaves the familiar and comfortable confines of his home, culture and country to make a better living? Only to be ridiculed later by the designer-clothes-cladded ABCDs who forget that their own parents took a similar journey, and most probably looked and talked just like him.

Faith does affect behavior

Religious teens get in less trouble than peers, study shows
************************************************
By Carrie A. Moore
Deseret News religion editor

High school students who regularly attend worship services and participate in their faith`s youth group take fewer risks, get into less trouble and participate in more constructive activities than their less-religious peers.

While many parents and church leaders have long believed that such is the case, a new study bears out just how significant a factor religious involvement is in constructive lifestyle choices for teens. Results from the National Study of Youth and Religion have even surprised some religious leaders, according to Christian Smith, a sociologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
As director of the research project, Smith said he wasn`t surprised by the general pattern of lifestyle choices the study reflects, ``but I was quite impressed with some of the differences we found`` between religious teens and those less so. Smith believes there is ``a suspicion (in American culture) that maybe religious kids are not that different. There`s a certain way of thinking about religion in our culture that says it doesn`t make a difference, that religious people are hypocrites. Students say that frequently.``
But the nationwide study provides solid empirical evidence that shows the affect of a faith-centered lifestyle on teens. The results are a nice affirmation for religious leaders, Smith said, some of whom have adopted the skepticism of the culture. When he shares his findings, some ``weren`t sure (about the affect of religious activity) themselves and it was surprising for them.``
Smith said youth studies rarely measure religion at all, and none he knows of are as large or detailed at measuring the correlation between religious activity and lifestyle.
Of the 30 delinquency, risk and activity outcomes the study measured, only one ? taking a gun to school ? was not significantly related to religion, according to the report.
The survey of high school seniors showed that, for those who report attending church at least weekly:

* 43 percent said they had never smoked a cigarette.
* 49 percent said they had never gotten drunk.
* 55 percent said they never go to bars.
* 70 percent said they had never tried marijuana.
* 72 percent said they never have received a traffic ticket.
* 76 percent had not shoplifted in the past year.
* 48 percent said they had not been truant in the past year.
* 82 percent said they had never been suspended or expelled.

The same group of students were more likely to have parents who limited the amount of time they can go out with their friends on school nights, the survey showed. They are also less likely to argue with their parents, and more likely to participate regularly in both volunteer work and athletics or exercise.
Smith said the most surprising findings to him revolved around the high correlation between religious involvement and physical activity. ``Religious kids are less likely to drink, and that sort of makes sense. But the fact that religion is very important to someone makes them significantly more likely to participate in athletics, church groups or exercise`` was striking to him. ``You wouldn`t necessarily think that religion has anything to do with sports but there seems to be connection.``
He said the regularity of religious activity, the duration over a period of years, and the stated importance of religion to the student are key factors in lifestyle choices. Unless teens reach a certain ``threshold`` of religiosity and commitment, ``a little bit of religion doesn`t seem to make much difference. It`s the 12th-graders who attend church weekly or more, attend regularly and have been involved with a youth group for a long time`` that show an association between avoiding delinquent and dangerous behaviors or becoming involved in fitness-related activities, Smith said.
The survey, which also breaks participants down by denomination, shows 50 percent of those who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints say they participate in some type of fitness-related activity on a daily basis ? the highest among faith groups identified. While they represented only 2.4 percent of survey respondents, their answers seem to reflect LDS prohibitions on alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs: 75 percent said they never go to bars, 73 percent said they never have tried marijuana, 67 percent said they had never been drunk, 63 percent said they never drink and 57 percent said they never smoke. More than 75 percent said they had not shoplifted within the past year.
LDS seniors were most likely among their denominational peers to ``sometimes`` skip school (37 percent), to have vandalized property within the past year (20 percent), and were equally as likely as ``other Protestant`` students to have stolen an item worth less than $50 in the past year (30 percent).
They also report the highest level of agreement among faith groups surveyed on statements designed to measure risky or danger-seeking behavior, with 30 percent saying they ``get a real kick out of doing things that are a little dangerous`` and 31 percent saying they like to ``test myself every now and then by doing something a little risky.``
The statistics used in the report were gleaned from the Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey, which has been administered to eighth, 10th and 12th graders since 1975. The Youth and Religion study focused on 12th graders, and does not include school dropouts or home-schooled youth.
The four questions regarding religion analyzed in the new study are:
