New Delhi, Dec. 29: Nabi Ahmed would have been a senior officer in the Pakistani Army now, saving the lives of Indian soldiers.
But Ahmed — agent Ravindra Kaushik to the Indian security establishment — died a miserable death last year in a Pakistani jail after a searing chapter in India’s espionage history went awry.
Kaushik had been cruising along fine on Mission Pakistan, penetrating deep and reaching the heart of the enemy establishment — the army — as a resident agent of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and doing “commendable” service as “a spy sitting in a right place in enemy land”. Till Inyat Masiha, an operative sent by RAW to contact Kaushik in September 1983, inadvertently blew the agent’s cover.
Kaushik was then captured, tortured for two years at an interrogation centre in Sialkot, dumped in Mianwali jail for another 16 and left to die. In November 2001, Kaushik succumbed to pulmonary tuberculosis and heart disease.
A year after Kaushik died unsung on alien soil, his Jaipur-based family is on a mission: they want India to acknowledge and recognise the sacrifice Kaushik has made for his country.
“We don’t want money. What we want from the government is recognition of the contribution by agents as they are the real foundation of the security system,” said Kaushik’s brother, R.N. Kaushik.
“If the government can honour people in uniform, why hesitate about undercover operatives?” he asked, calling for a government policy to recognise the work intelligence agents do.
It is an appeal few governments will be able to accept. Governments rarely recognise in public secret agents – the “faceless” personnel of the security apparatus. Not only that, it is a common practice to disown spies caught in a foreign country.
Kaushik joined RAW in 1975 as a 23-year-old after graduating from Sriganganagar in Rajasthan. Trained to act as a “resident agent”, he went to Pakistan, assumed the alias of Nabi Ahmed, did his graduation in law, learnt Urdu, married there and joined the Pakistan Army. He was sentenced to death in 1985 for spying but later the punishment was reduced to life imprisonment.
Kaushik secretly wrote to his family in India, telling them of the barbarism he was subjected to. In a letter, he asked: “Kya Bharat jaise bade desh ke liye kurbani dene waalon ko yahi milta hai? (Is this the reward a person gets for sacrificing his life for India?)”
Both Kaushik’s brother and ailing 72-year-old mother Amladevi --- his father died of shock and heart failure --- have a grouse against the government: all their pleas since 1987 to secure Kaushik’s release from Pakistan custody fell on deaf ears. They wrote several letters, but got no response apart from foreign ministry despatches that “his case has been taken up with Pakistan”.
One such letter from Amladevi to Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee read: “Had he not been exposed, Kaushik would have been a senior army officer of the Pakistan government by now and (continued in) the coming years (serving India secretly).”
Another one went: “The government has never bothered to rescue him, not to talk of consoling and helping his family even on humanitarian grounds.” Nor did it send medicines on time when Kaushik was dying, though “a spy sitting in the right place… saves the life of at least 20,000 soldiers of his nation”.
Amladevi had written to several other BJP leaders, including L.K. Advani and Jaswant Singh, but her family has till date not got any benefit due to government servants, not even pension. All they get is a monthly allowance of Rs 500

The BJP president, Mr.Venkaiah Naidu, believes that Gujarat gave a mandate for the Hindutva ideology. And he is determined to replicate the experiment everywhere. The Opposition parties and others, who refuse to accept Hindutva, attribute several other reasons to BJP’s victory.
Whatever be the explanations, those committed to the cause of the oppressed castes and classes should not neglect to identify yet another underlying factor, which enabled the BJP to achieve its landslide victory in Gujarat. And the factor is nothing but the myth, the communal political myth that was fabricated by V.D.Savarkar in 1917. What took place in Gujarat on December 12 was a battle between a powerful myth Vs a passive and inactive reason, from which the myth came out victorious. Modi, the mythmaker, proved himself to be an effective embodiment of the spirit of Savarkar in mythicising the political consciousness of the people of Gujarat. His sensitivity to the Hindu feelings and his loyalty to the Hindu community are certified by the Sangh Parivar, including the Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and the Deputy Prime Minister L.K.Advani. He is presented as the saviour of the Hindus, as one who is capable of establishing the Hindu Rashtra. What is interesting is that Modi himself is made into a myth.
We should not fail to understand that myth, by refusing the Logos, always makes enchanting appeal to the Eros and Pathos and galvanizes the psychic energy buried in the collective unconscious. It has the mesmerizing capacity to make one believe in the UNREAL as REAL and to evoke unconditional faith, devotion and commitment towards the same. In order to survive and be sustained, the myth needs rituals. The genocide and the pogrom that Modi reportedly masterminded in Gujarat were such rituals. It should be noted that only Modi could electrify crowds during the election campaign, attracting them in great number, which L.K.Advani himself could not do. Such was the power of the Myth! What the opponents of Modi failed to see was this explosive power of the political myth.
Having realized its potentiality, Hitler fabricated the myth, namely, the superiority of German race, upon which he constructed the whole ideology of Nazism. It is only by employing myths, he believed, that he could powerfully exploit the emotions and the psychic energies that were dormant in the collective unconscious of the German masses in order to make them surrender unconditionally to the Nazi ideology. Therefore, he started fabricating myths and applying mythical strategies in his political action. Mussolini asserted the inevitability of myths: ``Hitler and I have surrendered ourselves to our illusions like a couple of lunatics. We have only one hope left – to create a myth.`` Mythicising politics and politicizing myths thus necessitated Hitler to mythicise culture, history, education, media and various other institutions.
V.D.Savarkar, who wanted to establish the Brahminic hegemony in independent India, knew fully well that the majority of the people would not accept Brahmanutva. And therefore, he adopted the same spirit and strategies of Hitler in articulating Brahmanutva ideology based on the Manudharma Shastra under the garb of Hindutva. He fabricated myths such as the Hindu Rashtra and Cultural Nationalism and emphasized the necessity of mythicising the strategies in order to achieve the Hindu Rashtra. The Sangh Parivar, determined to convert India into a mythical subcontinent, is eventually becoming successful in mythicising not only Indian politics, history, culture, education, media, etc., along with the religious and social consciousness but also the emotions and psychic energies dormant in the collective unconscious of the Indian masses.
The Constitution Review, Promulgation of POTA, mission against terrorism, attack on the minorities, saffronisation of education, Godhra, Gujarat genocide, BJP’s defense of Narendra Modi, Gaurav Yatra, Gujarat elections all these have to be understood from this perspective. The very formation of a coalition government under the leadership of BJP is nothing but a politics that is mythicised, which the NDA allies have failed to understand. In the last election manifesto, BJP also echoed the RSS slogan of ``one nation, one people and one culture``, vehemently advocating Hindutva as the core of cultural nationalism, which should be the principle of the Indian state. And yet, the NDA allies betrayed democracy and secularism by being party to the Hindutva myth merely for the sake of their short-term political gains.
In fact, the Gujarat election is a warning, first and foremost, to the BJP allies in the NDA government. The victory of the BJP should enable them to understand the intensity of the madness with which Modi and his patrons have worked to inspire devotion in the Gujaratis for the Hindutva myth. The genocide, which followed Godhra, as a ``reaction for action``, became a sacred ritual that was necessary to heal and sanctify the wounded sentiments of the Hindus. And this explosive power of the myth was the driving force, which led the BJP to its landslide victory in the December 12 elections in Gujarat. It has not only boosted the Sangh Parivar but has also set a precedent to officially exploit the Constitution and to mythicise the consciousness of the masses.
Can Congress and the other political parties put up any resistance to this mythicising process of the Sangh Parivar? Will the egocentric political class, which is perennially fighting to grab a slice of power somehow somewhere in the corridors of the government, really come forward to do away with this growing communalism? No, the NDA partners are the evidence to how the political class can treacherously betray democracy and secularism. The Congress Party, which is constructed upon the varnashrama system, can never champion the cause of the lower castes and classes. It is money power, goondaism and casteism, which generally characterize the formation of any political party, from the village to the national level. Can this political class, then, really save the country from being mythicised? Will it come forward to genuinely address the real issues that are actually confronting the voiceless and marginalized people of this country?
The real issues are not what Venkaiah Naidu emphasized while addressing the party’s national executive committee meeting on 23rd December such as ‘terrorism, extremism, and political opportunism.’ Focus on terrorism has proved to be a powerful myth in the present global context as America is targeting terrorism to spread its domain of capitalism. Both economic fundamentalism [American crusade of capitalism] and the religious fundamentalism [Brahmanutva under the garb of Hindutva] have converged in the present Indian politics. Focus should be not on terrorism but on the root causes, which breed such terrorism. Terrorism is only a symptom, a dangerous symptom, of a society whose basic structure, systems and ideology that govern the society are unjust and dangerous to human integrity and fulfillment.
Millions and millions of poor people are perennially crying for food, clothing, shelter, employment, education and health. The Adivasis, the Dalits, landless wage earners, slum dwellers, working class women and the poor in the remote villages are being systematically alienated from being part of we the people of India. What they are longing for is – equal opportunities to grow, equal opportunities to live with dignity as human persons, and they desperately crave for a just social order, they long for a radical change of the unjust systems and structures, they long for social change. These are the real issues that need to be addressed and it will be possible to solve them only by empowering the people. It means political, social, economic, cultural and spiritual empowerment.
Hence, a thorough conscientization of the masses is the need of the hour. Bringing reality to ones conscience is what is meant by conscientization. Only reality can defeat the myth and history has proved that myth will have an end. What the present historical context of India demands is that the voiceless and the marginalized people begin to empower themselves. Social activists, human rights activists, Dalit and tribal activists and all those committed for the cause of the oppressed castes and classes should get genuinely involved in empowering them. The People’s Movement and People’s politics will be the only counter strategy to the communal myth.

Shourie uses a clever method of using others to express his views. In fact, he effectively uses certain eminent personalities as his mouthpiece and quotes extensively from them. For example, he frequently uses the writings of Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda, in order to impress upon the reader how badly Hinduism has been treated by the Christian missionaries. For instance, Shourie says; ``The viciousness of the distortions and misrepresentations of the missionaries, the virulence of their abuse, the length of time over which they kept up the barrage we cannot imagine these today. Swami Vivekananda had to face these at every turn, Gandhiji knew them well`` (Missionaries, 45-46). He says again: ``Swami Vivekananda has given the most heart-rendering accounts of the calumnies that Christian missionaries spread about Hinduism, about India, about him personally.`` (Missionaries, 3-4).

Clearly Arabs are as color struck as we are; I dont know how to break it to you, but Latinos, Africans, Asians and African Americans also have the problems of internalized racism for a variety of diferent reasons. Obviously the caste system has its burden of unexcusable class and race bigotry, but if I remember, before you started shooting off miles away from the topic into your own special little world, this article was about Pakistanis and how supposedly Muslims are supposed to be non discriminatory.

Eminent legal luminaries Ram Jethmalani and Shanti Bhushan will fight free of cost the cases of Mohammed Afzal, Shaukat Hussain Guru and Delhi University lecturer S.A.R. Geelani, who have been awarded the death sentence for the December 13 terrorist attack on Parliament House.
The two lawyers were approached by Mr Shabir Shah, leader of the People’s Freedom Party (PFP) of Jammu and Kashmir, to appear on behalf of the three convicts in the high court against the death sentence awarded to them by a Special POTA court on December 18.
Mr Shabir Shah told UNI that the three convicts had decided to file an appeal against the death sentence awarded to them by the POTA court.
Mr Shah said Mr Jethmalani, who is currently in Vienna, had given his consent when contacted on telephone.
“Both have decided not to charge any money from the three convicts,” Mr Shah added.
The PFP leader said Mr Shanti Bhushan had also agreed to appear on behalf of Afsan Guru, wife of Shaukat Hussain Guru, and take up her case in the high court free of cost. UNI
