BACK TO BENGAL BENGALI AND TASLIMA FEMALE BENGALI WRITERS ...
Monica Ali: A writer`s journey
By Shivani Mahendroo, New York, Nov 24
Monica Ali`s novel ``Brick Lane`` garnered so much acclaim after its release on September 9 last year that Granta magazine selected the author for its once-in-a-decade list of their 20 Best Young British Novelists.
In an interview with IANS, the young author of Bangladeshi origin7 and mother of two, who was nominated for the Booker Prize, talks of how the novel happened.
Excerpts:
Q: When did you first start to write?
A: I think writing was something I had always thought about but never really got into until I had children. I started writing short stories about three years ago when my son was a year old. I went onto the Internet late at night -- there were some online writing groups for writers to exchange views of each other`s work.
That was really useful for getting me started because I didn`t have to leave the house. That got me into the habit and discipline of writing regularly. When I had my second child, I thought that I wanted to do something bigger than short stories.
Q: What was the process of getting your book published?
A: My plan was to write this book part-time and then find an agent and, if I was lucky, get it published. In reality, what happened was that I showed a couple of chapters to a friend with the intention of getting a bit of friendly feedback.
I hadn`t written the whole book at this point. She was actually working at a temporary job at a publishing house in London and asked if she could show a chapter to an editor there. I said it was fine and thought nothing would come of it. I got a call the next day from the editor who asked if I had more chapters. I gave her the rest of the three chapters I had written.
Q: What about finding an agent?
A: I got an agent right after I got the offer to publish the book. Everyone, including the publisher, said to get an agent because he or she can look after the business end of things.
So, I went with an agent that a friend recommended. She is actually from New York. I spoke with her and really liked her. I felt like she really understood what I was trying to do.
Q: Can you tell me about the writing process: the challenges, the writer`s block?
A: I have two small children, so after I sold the book, I got some part-time childcare in the morning so I could work. After they had gone to bed at night, I would write again. I had to be very disciplined -- there was just no other way to do it especially with a timeline. On the weekends, I wouldn`t write but I would think about things and use the time to reflect.
Whenever I became frustrated with the writing or needed to just think, I would take a hot bath. The words just flowed after that.
Q: How about the publicity process? Has your life changed?
A: It means I have to do a lot of interviews! I just try to view it as a part of the job, which will enable me to spend the next two or three years or however long I need to write the next book. Overall, it hasn`t changed my life that much though it can be hard sometimes because I would rather be at home holed up writing.
Q: What advice do you have for aspiring authors?
A: If you are really going to be a writer, then it doesn`t really matter what anyone says to you or what advice they give you. I would really say to keep going no matter what. It was highly unlikely when I started writing that this would happen, so you just never know.

i should tell you upfront that i am not a big fan of taslima nasreen`s work, but
i am a big fan of free speech. i have not followed her career with much interest.
so i cant answer questions in depth or with any authority. from her bangla
interview i gathered that the BD govt has taken her BD passport away and wont let
her into the country, even if she uses another passport to apply for a visa. some
regional court has convicted her of blasphemy over something and that makes her a
``criminal``, a charge she couldnt fight cos she couldnt get into the counry, which
makes it worse. she cant even appoint an attorney on her behalf due to more legal
reasons that i didnt understand. i dont know if her books are officially banned
or not, but bootlegs are widely available. she has always had a lot of support
from the academics and intellectuals in BD for her freedom of speech (she`s been
very outspoken about the repressed women in BD), but not so much admiration for
her literary talent.

Saminaha! I can hear you trying to speak out. Can it be a bit more louder and explicit please!!!
Comparison of narratives which have been DE-Contextualized is a well known strategy of criticism- I would like some more reaction on what Farzana is trying to do - Lampooning Taslima by using terms like ``TRULY``, ``CONTEMPORARY`` and ( on the top of it) ``ISLAMIC`` ( as far as I can understand Taslima is an Atheist)- BTW As she aged, Chugtai`s feminism under went various twists and turns from the youthful revolutionary Ismat to the mellowed, bombay socialite.
Anyway, this is what bombastic journalism is about- trivializing issues , stereo-typing persons, lampooning, and ofcourse-- plain and simple Bit*hing.
Neither you nor TASLIMAhas contributed anything to
