Cry, the Beloved Country

What troubles me most is the tendency of people in India to resort to collective punishment - against Hindus, against Muslims, against Sikhs, and against Christians. The terrible murders in Godhra should be confined to Godhra. All those who took part in this inhuman killing of people should have been arrested and the most appropriate justice should have been provided to the guilty. Instead, the State Government of Minister Modi, the BJP, the VHP, and all the other three letter acronyms of hatred joined to conduct an insane retribution on those who had nothing to do with the murders in Godhra. Stripping, raping, slashing, cutting, and burning to death are ever-increasing levels of a people gone mad - they have no regard for anyone, not even their own faith that claims to respect life. Before the events in Naroda Patia and elsewhere in Gujarat, I had always had a sense of respect and honor for the way Hindus are taught to respect all living things. I admire the vegetarianism of Hindus. But raping and killing in Gujarat (especially by those committed to Hindu beliefs) presents a dichotomy that is impossible to understand. May God bring acceptance to all the survivors and their families
