T, JUNE 20: Five years after the Godhra violence, two persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of three men during riots at Rajkot. The case had been closed in July 2002 but reopened in 2004 following a Supreme Court order. Gopal Rathod and Kanji Bhanushali were arrested following availability of fresh evidence against them.

No case was registered in connection with the murder of the cleric, though the police issued a certificate saying his bones had been found and that he had been charred to death by a mob. Later, following the SC order, both the cases were clubbed together and reopened.

A total of 198 cases were registered in Rajkot in the post-Godhra violence, including two murder cases, an attempt to murder case and arson and loot cases. Chargsheets have been filed in only nine cases, while 50 people have been arrested in cases other than murder.
