There is a simple way of knowing whether a movie has gripped the audience or not. I saw "Saawariya" and "Om Shanti Om" on one day and the next...during the former,most cell phones were briskly messaging as well as making calls, with no thought that the loud voices or neon-like glow of the phones was disturbing those sitting nearby.Bored, loud comments about how dumb and gullible could a guy be were also rampant.Only Rani's appearance and dance number brought on a collective feeling of "paisa vasool". During SRK's OSO, the phones almost always stayed off (except for the harsh-voiced middle aged woman near me who had a phone-fight wiht her husband for 20 whole minutes as to why he did not make it for the show. He probably wanted to get away from her for 2 and 1/2 blissful hours!!)Frequent bursts of laughter rewarded King Khan's comic sequences, especially during the south-super-hero fight scene parody.
I seriously think that phone companies can help producers take a realistic poll on the first day of release, if they find a way of keeping tabs on how many SMSs and calls went out during screening. I remember watching an ATP event years ago when Boris Becker refused to serve and continue play till all cell phones had been switched off or ejected from the stadium. He carried the clout in those days for the sponsors to comply too. But in movie theaters,one has to deal with noisy next-seat conversations like a woman asking the maid to make an extra subzi for dinner or some guy who is giving a nonstop blow by blow account of the film to a pal who could not make it to the show.

Now seriously, I wanted to distract myself from the political news saturation on CHOWK and just about any other
media outlet recently about events in Pakistan.

Movies are a great escape. BUT I will NOT recommend The Darjeeling Express to readers because I thought that it was a waste of my time and money.

My resentment is not against the author or at this article, as I did not even attempt to read this article. It has more to do with Chowkie stakeholder's/mafiaso's decision to publish something that is less important than prevailing political issues.

Saawariya will bomb at the box office. In the festive season (and usually otherwise) people avoid subtle movies. We have an example of Lamhe and Silsila. People will instead prefer to watch typical hindi formula film Om Shanti Om. Moreover SLB's fetish with incorporating too many songs is going to test the patience of viewrs. The film is his shortest ever with too many songs and a very thin storyline. I like a couple of songs though, Shabnamee Si and MashaAllah.

'And a personal favorite of mine, Raj Kapoor, whose grandchildren make their debut in this film, it seems that Sawariya may just be extending on one of the richest and longest legacys of the South Asian film industry today.'

Performers employed from the same family as the has-beens, (such as daughters, sons etc) is the surest sign of mediocrity keeping an 'industry alive' in a similar fashion as politicians breaking in their children into the game and monarchy and aristrocracy living up to their cliques.

Idiots like the author of this article, lap up nonsense like this for the same reason as children like princes and princesses in their lives.

Black was over the top. Bhansali is over the top. Saawariya will also be over the top.

White Nights can never be over the top, hence let us not even begin to compare apples to shreddable wheaties.

Filmmakers can say whatever they want about what inspired them, it doesn't mean you have to believe them. Whenever these people have taken something sublime in their hands, they have made lime juice out of it.

btw, Anil Kapoor is not related to Raj Kapoor family. He is a separate stand-alone Kapoor entity on his own. Many Kapoors flood India in all directions the Ganges flows, but not all claim lineage from the great unwashed Prithviraj K, though with the philandering abilities of that family, they probably could.

What u say is childish and arrogant. There is no ban in Pak as far as writing on a romantic films like Saawariya goes. Even political activities are reported freely in newspapes and on TV. It is good for us that at least some Pakis talk reasonably about Indians, though I am not sure if Ras Siddiqui is Paki or not. U should only comment on the film and the related article. Article is informative but the author should have waited to watch the movie and should have published a full review.

Chowkie thekedars, So nothing much important going on in Land of Pure so let's publish an article on B grade indian movie.... ooops forgot there is a ban on freedom of writing .
