Shah2...
Manoj Shyamalan is not like typical Hollywood/Bollywood movie maker...
Mumbai movies are like cheap, use and throw, chinese goods. Watch for once and forget it in the hall.

To build an entertainment empire, you need to ensure on quality and indigeniousness. How will you sell Hollywood clones in USA, UK, Australia, China? ( Like US consumer buying CISCO product clone from Huewai or GM Chevy clone Cherry QQ).

Due to language barrier and cultural affinity, most of the cow belt people, Paki, Afghani....will prefer Mumbai version of original Hollywood/French/British/Italian movie but not in South India...

Like any other business, the media and entertainment business depends for its success on labor(actors, directors, technicians), capital and market size. In addition, vibrant media business requires political and economic freedom. India clearly has all of these ingredients in place for dramatic growth. Beyond just the numbers (top-line and bottom-line), the media and entertainment business has the power to change how people think and act. It, therefore, has much greater influence on society than other sectors of business and industry. I think the growing strength of Bollywood and Indian media has the potential to transform India and how it is perceived by its friends and foes around the world. This a seminal moment for India. I wouldn't be surprised if Ambani and other key players in India's media business today are seen by future historians as the architects of the modern Indian empire able to project its power and influence around the globe.

Reliance, Walmart eyeing Malayalam film industry'

Kochi (PTI): Another controversy is brewing in the Malayalam film industry with the MACTA Federation on Monday alleging that Reliance, Walmart and Tatas have signed up at least three top actors, including Mamooty and Mohanlal, besides 10 reputed film directors, for their coming films.

This will destroy the industry and the directors, including Priyardarshan, Fasil, Siddiq, Joshi, Lal Jose, who broke away from the Malayalam Cine Technicians Association (MACTA) should withdraw from any agreement they have reached with the companies, Federation Treasurer, Baiju Kottarakara, told reporters here.

Mumbai movie do represent soft power of India, but not to the western, civilised world...
Asian countries (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Bangladesh) may be good customer for Mumbai movies. I don't thing Mumbai movie creates any positive impression outside its own audiance in West (Paki,India, BD people living in UK and US)...

Riaz Haq...

Ans: Brits created ultimate empire possible. They were not only military power, they were intellectual powerhouse as well. That made the former British colonies stick to English as main language for education, even after Brits left...

Re: # 10

Maju Anna,

Mallu movies are wrongly stereotyped. Actually they belong to the intellectual/artistic variety very much similar to the Bengali cinema. Its the Tamil/Malayalam partner movie makers who produces those sizzlers.

Sadly, in this period of success = commercial success, Malayalam cinema has slowly gravitated towards the modus operandi of Tamil. But still they are way ahead of other South Indian cinema.

nkg,

You are right to a great extent. Suave heros, sensual women, exotic locales and ripped off storylines seem to define Bollywood.

Majumder...
Apart from the sizzlers ( Shakila), they produce good quality movies....

Vengat, Majumder, Haris...

Mumbai movie, to its core, is of very poor quality. It was the regional movie makers, who used to add the value to it. Initialy it was Bengali directors, now it is turn of South Indian directors. Apart from Balki's - Chini Kum,Divakar Banerjee's- Khosla Ka Ghosla, Rajat Kapoor's - Mithya, Imtiaz Ali's - Jab We Met, I don't think much of the Mumbai movies of this year was watchable.
And unfortunately Priydarshan has started making sh** movies.

In one of the earlier posts, I have told the reason. Withtout good literature and internal cultural practice ( drama, dance, music) you can not make good movie industry but can make blunt popular one. That is, where, Hollywood and Mumbai movie industry shares common value system and Mumbai is younger brother of bollywood. Sergio Leone made $ series movies- and our Amitabh Bachchan and Jhaved copied these concepts in Sholay....The list is very big as per as copying is concerned....

Couple of years back (2001), I had watched a movie called "Lagan". After seeing for 1 hour, I had some work and have to leave the theatre. The movie was quite boring also. After couple of months, I had learned that, the movie beacome superhit in cow belt and even nominated for Motion Picture Academy Award. I was surprised. I had found nothing good in the movie apart from good sound engineering and Bhanu Athaia's costume. Anyhow, fortunately, this movie failed to impress the board of jury members (Oscar) as well.
In current circumstance, you may find couple of Mumbai script writers and actors wining BAFTA or Cannes award. But, that is political decision to impress India and bring India in their fold. Unfortunately, our Ministry of Culture department and NFDC is like a toothless body and now surrendered to Mumbai jokers....

We dont have anybody in the league of Balachander today...The good thing about the Tamil industry is, you dont have to be a son of a super star, director or a producer to get a chance and need not be stereotypically handsome to play the protoganist role.

Yes Vengat anna, the tragedy is that even Maniratnam, one of the most talented filmmakers we have relies on excessive commercialization to sell his films. We'll probably have to wait a while for another Balachander :-(

Harish Anna,

Its disappointing to see all the potentials remaining potentials vis-a-vis Tamil industry. Yes technicians from TN are good.
