Finally a fine tribute to Faraz Sahib here on CHOWK.

Enjoyed reading this article very much.

I just asked a simple question and you went on to assume I am attacking. I never asked if Tonight show is a good show.

It does bother me that Americans make sure they pronounce French or Italian words accurately but no efforts are made for languages spoken by non goras.

Tahmed writes "leno probably learnt it when he went took the jay leno show to mecca to lighten up the hajj proceedings."

Jay Leno is an idiotic freak show where the fool gets paid millions just to read jokes composed by other for 5 minutes and then chit chat with celebrities that want to push the wares of capitalist production. Your "mecca" where Jay Leno takes his show is walmart, leave the Muslim mecca out of it.

Thank you kindly,

TNI Masadi

#6 the k is to represent the h in Ahmed pronounced in arabic with a guttural sound (closest, but not quite, engish equivalent being the kh sound). leno probably learnt it when he went took the jay leno show to mecca to lighten up the hajj proceedings.

Mr Akhmad,

I always thought Jay Leno pronounce Ahmad with K incorrectly when talking about middle east/Muslims in his monologue.

What is the origin of your name? what is the story behind K

Aziz lala

A very well written piece, I especially enjoyed the description of Peshawar of the 70s. If we are talking about the same khokha then it is still doing brisk business, known as "Haq ka Khokha" and a rallying point for students from Edwardes college and Peshawar University. The proximity to FG girls college might be a reason for that :)... besides that, falak sair is gone but silver star cafe and London book shop are still going strong... but in any case do write more... this was a treat.

Naqshbandi:

While Faraz was teaching Urdu literature I was studying those uninspiring subjects labeled as non-medical science. But now that you have raised a question I will be on the lookout for any of his students at the alumni meetings and try to find out what kind of a teacher Faraz was.

Re: # 1; Naqsh

I think I saw Zeemax say somewhere that Faraz was his teacher at Peshawar Uni ... small world!

... needless to say I loved his poetry and met him once at a Mushaira in Sydney .... I only ever knew him as a poet and that's good enough for me!

I enjoyed this piece, brings to mind the uncertain question, then to wave it away, for more important work to be done..."life"...death that other corridor, some exam from elsewhere.

Thanks Aziz for those snippets--I loved reading them.
May Allah forgive him and give him paradise.
A great poet....

Do you know of anyone who was in his classes? It would be interesting to hear what he was like as a teacher...
