Your email address seems to have fallen out of my email system, so i thought I`d talk to you like this...

Read `The point` (shouldn`t it be a capital P?) after Asif forwarded it to me with the message:

``Akber yaar your chick is a good write-ist.``

I agree, you (still) are excellent.

Am also severly proud of you to have done what you did at the Point... proud that you had the conviction to actually do what (as you yourself say) is the `right` thing, but is never done and as is always regretted and then just resigned to being the lot that pakistani women have to resign themselves to... but that pretty much typifies the `rebel` (again as u refer to in the piece) that u are...

did arif get used to his haircut within 2 days (say hi)?

Also read Vomit and unfortunately fell into the category of no doubt most of the mere mortals who read it and thought: hmm she used the word f *ck, but don`t know what this was all about. explain.

So how`s your other creativeness going? TV i mean.

any other fun stuff happening?

Will be in your city in pretty much exactly a month. After two weeks of shaadis (jamil, sana, aminah) i`ll return to work jaded and in need of a rest.

Then the plan at the moment is to move to frankfurt from beginning of sept for 4-6 months, tis a project i need to do there so will take as long as it takes....

see ya love

Akber

ps. i hit the send button and was castigated for using the `f` word above. y are u allowed to write it but not me? ``At Chowk all are welcome to read write and think`` as long as you don`t think using certain words unless u happen to be the one writing on the site in which case its okay. Happy thinking....

Couldn`t relate to it. I thought it was about the ``most important decision in a woman`s life``

Well done, really glad to see you pushing the limits...when will Pakistani women be allowed to right openly about these things with absolute honesty?

thank you all for your very positive comments, a couple of which i want to reply to ...pakiguy wishes to know why..hrm...how about ``just because``? no? oh well. this article was written when my bf and i were having problems, BIG problems and i wanted him to know my what my reaction to a potential infidelity would be like.

he seemed to agree with ardeshir minwalla.

as for ``anotherwoman``..been there done that..which is perhaps why i know what would scare her :))

once again, thank you from the heart of my bottom.

``How we run from our ghosts only to seek them in other peoples bodies.``

Yes, very true. Is that what this flatulent philanderer is doing?

Loved your wicked sense of humor ;-). Eagerly awaiting your nasty book about Karachi. Spare no one!

Sudheendra:

A very warm welcome to Chowk. A couple of things you and others may want to keep in mind.

Pakistani society and correspondingly its elite is not as homeogenous as most people think. Hamid`s book has focused on the elite in Lahore which is only natural since he spent most of his life there and this is his first book(which in most cases has strong autobiographical tones). The upper crust in Karachi or Islamabad and even other parts of the country not only comprises of people with different backgrounds but may also differ radically in their mores and modes of behaviour.

I agree with you that the author is entirely at sea when he tries to incorporate the larger canvas of Pakistani society, its history and its economics in his story-telling. In his defence though, that may have been a massive undertaking and he may have deliberately decided to play coy(or some overzealous editor cut those parts out).

Pakistani elite right now is at war with itself due to the drastic reduction in the spoils that the state largesse allowed in the earlier decades. Corrupt to the core it might have been but at least it was united in its abhorrence of the mullahs and other reactionary elements. The present state of disarray is allowing these elements to not only strengthen but present the masses with a viable alternative. A prospect which you or your eminent bosses may not wish to confront.

Hmmm... the first time i read this story, it was like being punched in the stomach... made me breathless... you can understand that being punched in the stomach tends to cloud one`s perceptions somewhat. Right? Right.

But... the more I read this, the more I find in it. The subtle nuances are brilliant. You have a wonderful facility with (the English) language, the ability to create metaphor out of thin air, to inject humour into the most macabre of scenarios.

er... am i allowed to plug my radio show here? :) prolly not :).

I`m really looking forward, as I generally do, to what you will write next.

starts off in this satirical highpoint only to bring me back down with wanting to feel my hand in his. a wonderful piece in the myriad of emotions and how it all really comes down to what u feel u need the most. just a right hand.

gotta love the sarcasm.

thank you for this, loved it. :))

um, like they say up there, a little knowledge is a terrible, terrible thing. so how come no one ever wondered whether the hand of the other woman felt the same need as this one?

Vomit and verbal outburst!

Mad cow germs; eroticide: robbing every moment of sensuousness: and still wishing.

Am from the the same dysfunctional city,

hence, perhaps enjoyed it more.

Forget the dictates of gods of reason. Keep writing.

regards

Brilliant. You provided laughs at unexpected places while dealing with this seriously depressingly subject matter.

I particularly found the phrases ``lighting up your life like the hydrogen bomb i at some point in time intended to mail her,`` and ``eroticide by gas``

hitting the raw and instinctual side of us all. What a way of putting that into words....
