Dr. Azhar,
Nice to hear about Sharif again! For all you little kiddies out there, Sharif first appeared on the internet back in the glorious newborn days of soc.culture.pakistan.
I would guess that these days Sharif is not reading the newsgroups everyday, but surfing around to Jang, News, Dawn, and webdukan (in that order) each morning.
I hope we will see future escapades of Sharif updated for the new millenium!
Thank You :-)

Salman - Very nice and entertaining article! How true... how very true... I kept thinking as I read along! You certainly did a your homework on this Sharif character and the name ``sharif`` fits in just wonderfully! :-)

Is the author`s name Paisely? or faisal ?
Sharif Hussain reminds me of ME ! I am sharif hussain - and if this is faisal, you better email me back at thousandyrsofsolitude@hotmail.com
If it is not faisal, then could you get in touch with me anyways just so I can ask more questions about the character.
asap please ...

saftab:
You wrote, ``Thank God I`m not a Pakistani immigrant in the US. Are all of you so racist, bitter, insecure and full of self loathing?``
(I presume you are in Pakistan.)
I wouldn`t sweep everyone with your blanket ``all``. I imagine the percentage would be the same here as what one would find in any bazaar or cafe of Pakistan.
There is only one stark difference. We kill with words only.
regards

dear mr.azhar
very impresive...the development of Sharif`s character. The undertones...subtle hints in the article conveyed more details about Sharif`s life and personality than some direct statements. Seems to me that your analysis is based more on experience(personal or otherwise)than imagination.
well...keep writing. :-)
regards,
d.h.
P.S. and U r most definitely a Math person.:-)

Zehra,
Hmm, I know what you are saying…. We have a very small population of desi’s where we are, so I don’t really know how they behave and interact with one another in places where they have larger population and larger influx of new emigrants (I have a fair idea though)…. You may have a different context in which to view this piece of writing…..
I personally experienced quite a few things sharif went through, and although I found them painful, and distressing at the time, I do find them funny as well when I now look back. This piece reminded me of some of those things. Anyway, the trick is to realize that it’s not funny for people who are currently going through the experiences of transition period… they need encouragement, and support and not ridicule…. Funny aspects of such experiences emerge much later (but they do emerge, trust me on that!)…. And yeah, it ain’t a literary piece of writing by a long shot. You have to over look quite a few things (this is the first time he has written isn’t it?), including some racist and politically incorrect stuff.
Ok! enough back paddling from my first two posts. But I still find it funny alright!!??
I hope this makes sense.
Cheers,
Fair

It`s very hard not to laugh at this article the first time around, but as I gave it time and thought about what you wrote, it seems to loose its wit. It becomes more of a tragic story than anything else. It`s hard to feel sorry for Sharif though because more than anything else he just comes of as stupid, a nice fellow maybe but stupid. All in all I liked it.
I sincerely hope though, that you aren`t trying to paint a stereotype of most Desi`s in the U.S I`d like to think we`re more smarter than that, or that you aren`t trying to ridicule the transistion period everyone goes through when they first arrive, because niether of those are funny.

adnan: he`s not real. it could be ANY number of years..it doesnt matter. i know born and bred amreekans who have accents. they are more `desi` than i am.
fairdinkum(sp?):
i can relate to sharif just fine..which is why this is not funny.
desi`s have a huge problem laughing at themselves or taking any criticism. which is why they make fun of and laugh at people like sharif. in their ridicule they find strenght and they find a way to distance themselves from it. cuz god forbid their own people point and laugh at them they way they do at sharif.
