temporal--thanks for the suggestion but i don`t think that will be fair; i can only write poetry when i am emotionally moved and i wont feel honest if i change what was a poem about sensual and earthly love into a poem about mystical love.
I have written other such poems...poetry must be honest...:-)

STOP IT!:)
…ok I will make a conscious decision here to separate the poet from the ‘ultra traditionalist’:)this poem evokes the pains and anguishes of failed love…has some good lines…blended with some sophomoric ones…but here is a suggestion…with some thoughtful alterations and substitutions you can change the mortal beloved into the ‘immortal’…and you will have a traditional sufi musing on hand…

For temporal and others who might be interested...here`s another of my poems:
I think of you first in the morning when I awaken
And I think of you last before I go to bed at night!
I dream about you if I am able to fall asleep and
of you I think if I lay awake all through the night!
I am happiest when I am just sitting alone with you
For then the cares of the world appear to subside
Indeed, what else can the enamoured rose think about
When he has the nightingale sitting at his side?
And when I am with you I cannot avert my gaze
From your long silky tresses, your doe-like eyes
Your soft brown complexion, those maroon coloured lips
That face envied by the houris of Paradise!
And though you are beautiful of figure and form
It is your kindness, your modesty, your shy smile
Which dooms all to fall in love with your charms
If they are lucky enough to know you for just a while!
And yet though I truly love you O` soul of my soul!
I know that you are not mine and will never be
For your heart belongs to another and that forever
Doomed to remain `just good friends` is my destiny!
What do you think?

vaisay my fave poet is Ala Hazrat Imam Ahmad Riza Khan Barelvi--Urdu`s pre-eminent naat-khwaan. His diwan, Hadaiq e Bakhshish is a masterpiece. I am planning to write a short article about his na`atiyyah poetry for Chowk insha Allah (I hope they will publish it!!). His younger brother Mawlana Hassan Raza Barelvi and his son Mawlana Mufti e Azam Hind Mustafa Riza Khan were also good poets but not as good as Ala Hazrat who was a genius:
Yehi kehatee hai bulbul e baagh e jinaaN ke Riza ki tarah koi sihr-bayaaN
Nahin Hind mein waasif e Shah e Huda mujhe shokhee ye tiba` e riza ki qasam!

``can`t `fundamentalist Muslims` (I prefer to be called Traditionalist)
fall in love?! Your comments are strange! The Sufi shaikhs-all of whom were strict on Shariah-have written more on love than anyone else; ``
Ok, maybe my knowledge is incomplete. I was under the impression that fundamentalist/traditionalist Muslims were represented by the Ulema. I have read that the Ulema were against the Sufi form of mystical Islam as it moved away from traditional Islam which was more austere.
``But even those Muslims who are not Sufi orientated can and do fall in love-it is a human emotion--the noblest of them too! Ibn Hazm al Andalusi was the strictest scholar [belonging to the literatist Zahiri school which has now died out] yet he has written the greatest literary masterpiece on profane love: al-Tawq al Hamamah (The Ring of the Dove). ``
Again, for me, an example of a Fundamental/Traditional Muslim is Aurangzeb, the last Mughal. A man of piety and commitment to his religion, but austere in emotional expression. That austerity is hard to reconcile with temporal love. If poetry is acceptable to express emotion, why not music? A sincere question, and I hope you can elaborate.
Thanks for liking the poem though! :-) Poetry--Urdu, Farsi and English is my hobby...
I`m glad I read it. For the first time, I can imagine you as more than a caricature of an Islamic fundamentalist but as an individual with feelings and emotions like the rest of us. I do hope to read more of your work in the future.

Stuka said:
``His own writings on Chowk demonstrate the revulsion he has towards those who are not equally rabid followers of his faith. ``
I think this is not fair. I do not have revulsion towards anyone--I simply do not think much of those who make fun of Shariah and Traditional scholars and traditional islamic understanding--i think they are wrong but i do not hate them personally only what they believe in. I simply believe Traditional Islam is the Absolute Truth and the balm for all our ills and will not budge from this position. This is not `revulsion`. I believe in the Qur`anic concept of `loving and hating only for the sake of Allah`.

hamzad/hobbes--it was something which i wrote a few years ago as an undergrad at uni when my heart was broken by a dil-nasheen! I do love poetry and it was a way for me to come to terms with my loss and pain. Yes I was /am grateful for what she did give but the pain was still real when it all went wrong. Anyway, that is all in the past. Deep down my feelings for her still are there but wherever she is I hope she is happy :)
