``Religion is to discourage premarital sex while the story is to encourage it -
as trend setter``.

The relevant religion in this case, the Islam, does allow premarital and even extra-marital sex with what your right hand possesses, i.e., slaves, either purchased or got hold of in plundar (maale ghaneemat). In fact the sex is itself a super god subject only to its own laws. It is the `life force` determining all the cultural manifestations, differently in different classes of the society. As it is, it is better to avoid religious `Fatwa Baazi` in the matter of sex relations which were neither introduced nor are amenable to any religious code of ethics .

kaurasach,

If you ever visit jaranwala you are welcome to stay at my place. My village called ``Chuk Haiderabad`` is about 20 miles from Jaranwala. If your grandfather was posted in Jaranwala then he must know my grandfather. His name was ``Agha Sakhwat Ali Khan`` and his cousin ``Agha Sharif Khan``

regards

haideri

Under the circumstances that you have described I cannot imagine a girl putting a finger in her mouth and let it out without sucking it:)

Overall a good story but author should restrain from finer details. Someone said this about jokes, well it`s true about short stories also.

A short story should be like woman`s dress. Long enough to cover the subject and short enough to keep alive the interest.

Where did you find the ``sucking of punctured finger`` that you find too cheezy mentioned in the text? Is that a Freudian slip?

I have to agree with Subroto here; finely restrained and elegaic.

If objective was to ``contextulaize various forms of oppression in graded social structure of rural Punjab`` then it is lost in unrelated details, such as the description of Sughra`s image. The sucking of punctured figer was too cheesy. On the other hand, the description of the feelings of protagonist when he sees his father dragging Sughra to his room would have made a real difference. Becuase that is where the real drama was. I think you should pay more attention to the logic of the plot rather than on the finer details first.

badly narrated, boring, objective less and unnecessary long.

Mohammed,

Excellent story. Brings out the dark realities and innermost emotions beautifully woven with words. Keep it up.

Tarun

Amjed

Sughra I think was lucky as after all she was anointed by a pagan ritual of marriage. She should thank God that she was not a `loundi` (slave girl), but then her use as a sex obgect would have been considered quite legitimate.
