Yes, but Vertu`s already been available for a long time...Madonna dropped her 11,000 dollar one and had it written about on BBC last year.

Shame on you for being so behind the times. Tsk tsk...

I would never want to own a Nokia cell phone. Here are some of my rational and irrational reasons as to why:

- It is over-priced. Hardly do the consumers use all the features they pay for which makes it a bad invesment.

- You hear Nokia`s ring tone (ta ra ra ra, ta ra ra ra, ta ra ra ra raaaaaaaa! You all know what tune I`m using as I type it!) in a public place every few minutes. It is very common.

- It is so user-friendly that any one can access the information you`ve stored in it. Show your friends your new Nokia and find them reading your text messages after a while. Give them a Panasonic, Siemens or Samsung, and find them returning it back to you with a `Acha Hai!` covering up for their confusion over what key they should have pressed.

- Its `latest one` arrives faster in the market than a Pakistani fashion model. You`re elite today and obsolete tomorrow.

Why do you sport a 20K watch when a simple one would be just fine? Thus argued my GF when I told her that I`m quite happy with my Nokia 3310. I informed her that watches and mobile phones are just not the same. I have 4 watches (she has even more) priced over 20K but I carry only 1 mobile. She saw my point but still wanted me to `upgrade`, as she put it.

Reluctantly, I went and bought a Nokia 6630. I charged it, put the sim card and headed straight to office. I was in the cafeteria when my new phone rang for the first time. It took me a sec to realise that my ph was ringing. As soon as the call was over my colleagues started asking me about new mobile. I cursed myself for not reading the manual but luckily one of my friends knew all about this model. He informed the crowd (and me) about its features and I could see the awe in their faces.

``Camera ph, 1.3 megapixels, 1 hr video rec, bluetooth, gprs, internet, USB blah! blah! blah!

He knew most of the specs and we took a few snaps right there. I was really proud of my phone that day. The thrill vanished in a few days but I`ve come to appreciate my GF`s point.

It`s about style really. I still dont know much about my ph and never used internet on phone but it feels good nonetheless. Esp having a camera in my pocket and exchanging MMS with my friends.

You know, being an engineering student myself, I can`t help but tell people off, for telling me off, about my lack of cell-phone affinity. It`s interesting to see, furthermore, that the urban Pakistani today has a strange fetish for the `top of the line` mobayl phone, even though the phones and talk times are ridiculously expensive, if indexed relative to salaries. Like your article proves, the best phone was the cheapest one, because that`s all you needed!

I felt quite `paindoo` upon my return to Lahore after a two year hiatus to find people casually sending multimedia messages like pictures etc. But as time went by, I realise that mobile communication itself has fallen victim to Pakistani youth`s frustrations: text messaging and chatting...don`t we have anything better to do with our time...like write replies on Chowk?!

Oh, if anyone finds a silver Samsung with bells, whistles and cute colors on the LCD, please let me know. I borrowed a phone from my mamoo over the summer, which I lost at a shaadi, and still can`t face him with news of its demise...as far as he knows, it was left at my friends apartment who moved abroad! Piddling excuse, but it worked!
