#34 he means a ``purohit`` or a brahmin priest. and drawars are drawids.

there is some validity to what he says..some researchers claim that the geeta (krishnas sermon to arjun) is a later insertion into mahabharat ..may be the adi-shankaracharya.

``I think the quote of Lord Krishna in Geeta that says that he is responsible for all this inequality among human beings is a later addition into the text by unruly and racist Prohits.``

Urstruly

Not sure I understand. What`s a Prohit?

I suspect that in ancient times the practice of untouchability had more to do with hygene than the religious sanctions. As the aryan nations invaded and enslaved the local aboriginal Drawars, they put them into working as slave labors into tanneries and hauling human waste outside the cities. The racist elements among arayans, inorder to keep the race pure later sanctioned the dark/ aboriginal races as unheigenic and untouchable by indoctrination of religion. I think the quote of Lord Krishna in Geeta that says that he is responsible for all this inequality among human beings is a later addition into the text by unruly and racist Prohits.

dilli payee, we must listen to our gurus and hug our choora-jamadarnis to our bosom, nothing a little red-lifebuoy cant take care of. but what i am far more worried about are these biharis infesting our holy lands now..some have even started to contest gurdwara comittee elections :(

People like Akko and her children/grand-children need helping hand from the society so that they don`t end up doing the same dirty job generation after generation.

anyway, wasn`t human-scavenging banned in india???

the reservation ministry headed by arjun singh should provide some hope for such destitutes not the jats/yadavs. (since when were these jats/yadavs oppressed??)

No problem. May be I was overreacing.

Off topic - what do you think of this article by this Pakistani Sindhi gentleman who thinks Ahmedabad is like Paris :)

http://dawn.com/weekly/dmag/dmag2.htm

`` .. There was no dearth of paan (betel leaf) shops in Ahmadabad. What were conspicuous by their missing were blood-red betel-spittle on roads, pavements, shops, offices, stairs, washrooms, bathrooms and the toilets. I made desperate efforts to see solitary betel leaf spittle in Ahmedabad, but to no avail .. ``

You have projected very well how prejudices creep upon us unawares almost and with great subtelity. Shantanu

HP and others, now be fair! Kaura has never spared himself from his choice superlatives!

Like Akko, he is armed with his own highly devastating jharoo – which he swings around every which way. It leaves no favorites uncleaned or at least unmoved or at least unrattled if not outright unhinged! A legitimate point can be made that what he collects from these chowk rooftops in his own tin can is probably just as toxic as anything Akko ever would.

Throughout his stay here, he has toiled in this menial and thankless work. The blistering heat outside in June hasn’t slowed him down on his computer. He probably looks older than his age. For all we know, he could be walking with a limp and side sway. I am not sure if his hair is mehndi colored and unkempt or his appearance is disheveled yet he can be sort of amusing. We won’t talk about gold studded yellow and decaying teeth or his grinning mouth or wrinkled face – and he probably does not wear a salwar.

But he does routinely come and clean in his own way – for wages way below what even Akko received (and stop laughing – so do all writers and interactors!)

In this petty, selfish and cold world, he holds on to noble and warm gestures from days gone by.

My eyes well up whenever I think of this hard effort.

When one cleans feces day in and day out, why is anyone surprised if occasionally a few bits and pieces of the filth stick to your hands and cause others to get scared away?!!

Nothing that a piece of soap can not clean!

Pour that tea, now! And make sure you subject your OWN kettle to some hard scrubbing regularly!

I am not concerned with his co-religionists. I am sure they are fine and outstanding citizens.
I was just pointing out that this person takes Gurus’ words so seriously that he is willing to break the caste barrier with a cup of tea but still prefers to call everyone else, except himself, a Kanjar.
Thats how training at home comes into play.

As regard the story: Since the author is presenting this as a true story, I would just say that it is a childish attempt by a 50 years old to glorify himself as some kind of saint who fights for low caste`s rights against his granma`s advise by just calling it kanjarpun.

You must be from a very backward part of Punjab. Assuming that you are talking about ``Outhouses``, that used to be around 30-40 years ago.

We had one in my Pind and the ``Churra`` did all the cleaning and took money freely. Last I heard his grandson was running in an election for something and rode a Hero Honda.

I have had my share such experience in Hyderabad with poor Muslims. They all drank from the same cup and same Matka near Osmania Collger(cycle shop). Yakoob, the owner told me with pride that in Islam everybody is equal and hence drinking from the same cup.
It eveb made me think about Khalsa proactice when Amrit is given from the Battaa to everyone signifying brotherhood.

Some time later when Haija spread and one of the Chokras got it, he spread to everyone.

Strange are the ways of God.....

``Training shows....``

At least his coreligionists are trying to get over their ingrained biases, as opposed to some other folks who blow themselves up, and others, if changes in their codified 1400 years old biases are even suggested.

``That day, I decided I would remind my granny of a lesson about equality our Gurus gave us.``

This is from someone who can`t complete a sentence with the word kanjir in it.
Training shows....
