I don`t know why is it becoming a norm these days that we put the poor Mullah in every thing we do, speak about or even in this case think about.....come on give the poor guy a break...would you?

Less gossip, more questions

Sir — Contrary to what many feel, Kaun Banega Crorepati without Amitabh Bachchan is a flop. Much has been written about Shah Rukh Khan’s unflattering comments on his predecessor. But the fact remains that the new edition of KBC is nothing more than a chat show by Khan, who prefers to waste time gossiping with the participants. The producers might think that this will help the show get a higher rating. But while 18-20 questions would be asked per episode in the earlier editions, Khan manages to ask 15 or less. On January 30, only 12 questions were asked.

Yours faithfully,
Arpan Bagri, Calcutta

Re:naqsh

[...He is short and dark and doesn`t even have very finely structured features....]

Its very odd to hear this, considering that SRK is a blue blooded Pashtun. His family is from Peshawar and were Congressi, which is why they settled in Delhi and stayed back in India after 1947.

BJ-bihari,
My dad gave me some valuable advice when getting married: if your wife wants to learn driving, don`t stay in her way. I suspect the same logic holds if I object to Burpy Kaur getting hugged by SRK if she ever makes an appearance on KBC: not only will the hug definitely ensue, there may be some kissing involved as well. The missus can be pretty mean when provoked.

#27 Naqshbandi (follow-on)

However, to be fair - in order to spare you any connotations with the ACTS of the individual pictured in #13 - I apologize for inadvertantly creating any impressions that you LIKED that person.

I have no way to read your mind, your thoughts, your prejudices, your inclinations or your innermost desires! And therefore, one must give the benefit of the doubt.

Therefore, sorry!

In spite of your clearly VERY shallow concept of what constitutes beauty!

Well, we are talking about PHYSICAL looks.

You clearly said in #6, you think SRK is ugly because he is short and dark.

I simply put up a picture of somebody who is (probably) NOT short and (probably) NOT dark!

Just the type to rev-up that engine of ``beauty`` appreciation that runs you! Now you getting cold feet?!!

i`d want to hug the guy just because i find it amazing that someone with such unconventional (bordering on ugly) looks and mediocre acting talent has made it THIS far, he`s definitely a good people person, very cool

Abey Burps, don’t wiggle out of the REAL topic! The question is not if YOU would mind hugging SRK (why would SRK wish to hug you – to end up with an armload of lice, or something?) The question is whether you would encourage the sirdarinji to go do it?!! And if she DID decide to go do it – are you going to block her path – or are you going to step aside like a mouse?!

Now regarding this SRK versus Bachchan comparison!

SRK is an artist. True artists do not confine themselves to a single “idol”. Therefore, SRK is not limited to learning from the Bachchan. Yes, the Bachchan has had longenity – but does he have the SRK character?!! (Who has had the extra-marital affairs?!) Now, I am sure SRK holds not just Amitabh, but all his seniors in Bollywood in very high regard and tries to emulate specific successful attributes of each. (Have you seen him hug the Dilip?) He does so not because he is a good actor – but because he is a good human being.

That is why SRK is such a good role model – strictly based on his character and not so much on acting alone and certainly not based on the type of superficial appearance thingy that gets wolfy Naqshi’s hormones racing so uncontrollably that he probably faints in his bed!

(cont`d) By the way, I have to ask...what part of my post gave you the impression that I was a die hard fan of Amitabh B and Bollywood? Re-reading your post it seems oretty clear you were out to score cheap shots and responding as I did seems like overkill in retrospect...

#9 Burpinder...since you mention Amitabh Bachan, perhaps you could shed some light on this: why is he so revered in India ?
He is Bollywood`s only real legend, whose popularity has spanned 40 years and whose appeal is fairly universal. From angry young man to slightly weird middle-aged saviour to dignified elder statesman, Bachchan has been through tremendous adversity in his personal life: a long-drawn and very public affair with Rekha that near-wrecked his marriage, a near-lethal accident on the sets of Coolie at the peak of his career, a misguided move to enter (and quickly depart) politics, taken advantage of by every unscrupulous person around him resulting in bankruptcy and a very public loss of face and- most endearingly of all- a comeback and resurgence the likes of which have never been seen in the industry before.

Other than two or three films of slightly better quality than the ususal bollywood films, what does he have to his credit ?
He`s done his share of lousy films but Amitabh is a consummate actor- his success as KBC host was also a carefully crafted persona delivered with panache. Action, comedy, romance, drama- Big B`s done it all, and how. With a crop of leading ladies across 3 generations, may I add :)

Does India pick its heroes and legends now from among st those who dance from tree to tree in unreal, nonsensical bollywood films ?
Pretty much. Films in India are escapist. Though serious cinema has thrived alongside (cases in point Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani) it has had niche appeal at best, until recently when mainstream directors like Mani Rathnam, Ramgopal Varma, Madhur Bhandarkar and others have adopted a more serious approach with fairly decent commercial success. in fact, throughout the 80s and 90s, ``art films`` were viewed with derision by the average moviegoer. It`s a sign of the times that they are accepted now.

The guy is not even known to have done any significant work for the good of the general public....neither in the arts nor generally. Please enlighten us.
He has earned some respect for the way he has paid back all his debtors after the ABCL fiasco (the damage was substantial- to the tune of some 60 crore rupees). There are some aspects of his personality that are still baffling- his closeness to samajwadi Party MP Amar Singh and rags-to-riches businessman Subrato Roy for example- but by and large he comes across as a very thoughtful, cultured and humble personality who guards the privacy of his family life fiercely. For a movie star, that`s a big achievement.
