Indian society humiliates women? -- no way. I think the Indian Women humiliate themselves. The case in point is the following:
"India's culture minister has offered to resign in a row over whether Hindu gods are mythological figures.
Officials had presented the argument in court to support construction plans for an area devotees believe has remnants of a bridge built by the Hindu god Ram.
Minister Ambika Soni said she would quit if asked to by the prime minister.
She also confirmed that two directors of the Archaeological Survey of India, which prepared the court affidavit, had been suspended.
Hindu devotees believe the area between India and Sri Lanka - now known as Adam's Bridge - was built millions of years ago by Lord Ram, supported by an army of monkeys.
Ms Soni said an investigation was under way
But scientists and archaeologists say Adam's Bridge, or Ram Setu, is a natural formation of sand and stones.
On Wednesday the Archaeological Survey of India told the Supreme Court that the religious texts were not evidence that Lord Ram ever existed.
Hardline Hindu opponents of the government accused the administration of blasphemy and protesters carried out demonstrations in the area and in Delhi, Bhopal, and on a number of key highways.
The next day the report was withdrawn.
Ms Soni told reporters on Saturday: "If the prime minister of India... would feel that I am culpable and wants me to resign, it won't take me a minute to do so."
Ms Soni (who carries a big red dot on her forehead) said the directors had been suspended because they had ignored a revision she had made to the affidavit."(BBC)
So Ms Soni made 'revisions' that they were not the blond Rhesus monkeys who build the Ram bridge but the black-face Hanuman monkeys who did -- now that was indeed a big archeological blooper that the government archeologists failed to correct -- those biased no-good scientists did deserve the suspension – in my opinion.
Now I would like Chowk's resident intellectual, Kalchakra -- to please resolve the issue why Ms Soni's facts were ignored?

As per estimates published a couple of decades ago, every fourth male in India is a homosexual or has such tendencies. So it is time the society woke up and stopped attaching a stigma to such behaviour.

I haven't seen the movie but what you say about the hypocrisy of indian (and pakistani) society vis-a-vis gays is so true. The West has committed many crimes but i hate the way we tend to blame them for EVERYTHING--whilst so many at the same time would give their right nut to go and live their.
If prostitution in India hadn't declined since the glory days of Umrao Jaan you wouldn't be in this mess. But when you import everything including sexuality--and this from the land of the kamasutra!--this is what happens.
Our people love to pretend that things like prostitution and AIDS aren't happening and pick a convenient scapegoat to blame (the WEst/gays). I'm surprised they haven't mentioned Pakistanis yet as the core reason there is AIDS in India although I didn't make head or tails of that reference to pakistanis in the west...
