You should address this post to some defender of the Hindu faith because I have never denied the religious basis of the caste system.

There is no excuse for leaving him around and not executing the Soofi, the only thing this brings a suspicion to mind is that perhaps he is installed and supported by the enemies of Pakistan and there is not such a long list of those.

Re: # 210 yaara the thing about the past is to learn from it, learn from the mistakes, and not glorify atrocities in the name of ``tradition.`` i am a gujjar and proud of it- but it doesnt mean i am proud of everything that might have happened in the past. no- in fact my duty is to make sure past wrongs are not repeated and hence the past is important- because it helps paves the way for a better future.

#209 dm: no doubt children of poor men remain so as well, and children of the the better off remain so as well. but that is not what is the distinguishing feature of the caste system.
the distinguishing feature of the caste system is that it has religious backing for social inequalities (i.e. a brahmin or a kshatriya gets to live off others because this is his god-ordained reward for living a virtuous prior life; an untouchable is doomed to clean latrines because this is his god-ordained punishment for living a sinful life).
no beating around the bush, vague pronouncments of social hierarchies as if they are ordained by the natural order, can hide this inconvenient truth.

DM bhai sahab, there is a certain mind set where an a priori picture of the world is not allowed to be disturbed by inconvenient facts. Sometimes rationalizations are employed and at other times - to bring this back to the article in question - abuse is employed.
The angrez refer to it as 'denial'. ;-)

hneef:
"well nai's usually cook the deg's in weddings.. "
Before the partition, they also acted as surgeons (jarrah) and match-makers. I suspect those functions have been replaced by doctors and shaadi.coms.
zeemax:
Yes, they (kammis) are in every village. Kammi, in my time, was a generic term used for all kinds of manual workers. I am aware that you may not call them 'zaat' any more but they are still mostly hereditary and endogamous, which are the chief attributes of a caste system.

"I do know the difference. But these are not rival clans but there is a hierarchy involved here. Rajput followed by jatt followed by gujjar followed by tarkhan followed by qasai followed by mochi followed by...all the way to choorHa."
What is your source for this hierarchy? Probably you are a Rajput yourself, because in most of Punjab Jatts are the most dominant and highest caste. In the part of Punjab I come from ( Nurpur/ Khushab) Baghoor and Tiwana Jatts rule over the other castes, mostly Awans and some Rajput clans, with an iron rod. Even they would laugh if someone told them they had a higher status than the local Jatt Baghoor Maliks.
