Sorry to intervene.
You can use my gun to kill.
It is very Ajeeb to blame Hina Jilani and company.
I think attitude should be. Is it against Islam? Rather than is it Islamic.
Like a person fighting for social justice is labelled Communist and treated accodingly:-). Is it against Islam to fight for social justice.
Another example. In 1970`s leftist were fighting against Jagirdari and Sarmayadari Samaaj. Rightist particularly Jamat-e-Islami was against them and defender of Faith. Now Jamat-e-Islami because or due to being a Islamic party grasped it late and now is vocal against the Sarmayadari and Jagirdari Samaj.
Was it unIslamic in 1970`s because it was said by leftist. Has it become Islamic now because it is said by Jamat-e-Islami.
The same question should be put for 1/3rd seat for women in election. Is it non Islamic.
Because what is Islamic is already known for last 700 years and is static since then. Now to progress we should ask. Is it non Islamic. If no, then it is O.K.

Urstruly,
Sorry, I am not interested in any teaching/taming. Being a Mun Mau`jee, I have a tendency to question when I cannot seem to find the logic and reasoning behind a comment.
Let`s evaluate the situation:

RE: Zahra
Dear Zahra,
I think you see my point. There is resentment against certain NGOs which is effecting the work of ``good guys`` too. We must explore the cause of this resentment in a very objective manner. Somehow this is also linked with the issue of Blasphemy Laws and alleged persecution of Christians in Pakistan in particular and Ahmadis in general.
It has been a long time now that I have given up the idea that bigots, idiots, morons, and our favorite boggey man Mullah dont have a point; cant have a point.
Despite the admonishing from the gun totting Ustaani I aint giving up my bachkana harkaat-(and I am way past spanking too).
Regards
PS. Thanks for the words of encouragement on the other word. That was another of my own Bachkaana Harkat.

It is time to get out of your juvenile hurkataen! NGOs are NGOs. This was indeed an Ajeeb comment by you. What is that to do with someone being liked by the conservatives or bashed by them ? It is what the NGOs are doing that should be of concern and of relevance. I cannot seem to find the link to a news, I read a few months back where the Local Ulema(An Insult to the Word) in NWFP gave a sermon to the local women who were involved with the NGOs. In one of the fatwas, one idiot even went to the extent, where he stated that if there was any young woman who was involved with the NGOs she will be married off ASAP. Amazingly, the `lunatics` are not focusing on the lazy and menatlly deranged drugged men and have the nerve to prohibit the Naql-O-Hurkut of the young women. [Where is my gun ?]

Ladies and Gentlemen!
Thank you for your kind and informative responses to my request regarding the names of NGOs. Is there a site or a list of certain NGOs who have a dubious reputation in Pakistan. For example, Jilani sister`s NGO is not liked by conservatives; are there any others?

One organization I forgot to mention but would highly recommend is Sahil - they work on the issue of child sexual abuse and exploitation in Pakistan. I`ve attended some of their seminars and have a friend who has worked with them and speaks very highly of their efforts. Their website can be accessed at:
www.sahil.org
According to them ``last year in Pakistan there were 886 published cases of child sexual abuse (CSA). That means more than one male or female child was raped, gang-raped, murdered after the act or kidnapped with intent every single day.``
www.propoor.org:
This is another website someone recommended to use as a search engine for a list of NGOs working across South Asia. Haven`t had the chance to visit this site, so can`t say anything.

dl #86 I had sent in a a response yesterday concerning NGOs in Pakistan but it appears to have been lost in cyberchowk. What I had said was this: I saw the list posted by AH, and note that many of these are SOS villages in Pakistan. I am familiar with SOS, having visited their center outside Rawalpindi a few years ago. I found it to be quite open and the children seemed to have been well looked after. Their living quarters were neat and clean, with a surrogate mother in charge of each group of 6-10 children. Given that life is tough for an orphan child anywhere, and particularly more so in a poor country like Pakistan, I think I can safely recommend your taking a closer look at SOS. Other NGOs are of course doing very deserving work as well - Edhi is a living saint coupled with an effective adminstrator, it seems, who has made life easier for the sick and the injured. Malik Maula Bakhsh Trust runs schools for girls in remote areas and I consider it to be quite deserving too. What is important is that you contribute money and also visit these places when you go to Pakistan to make sure you know what your money is doing out there. God knows there is no shortage of help needed by the poor people of Pakistan.

Re #79:
Thanks for providing us with the list of organizations in Pakistan. I can vouch for at least a couple of the ones listed. I have personally seen the type of work being carried out at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and the SOS Children`s Village in Lahore and am satisfied with the way funds are being utilized there. The Shaukat Khanum Trust in fact is going through a critical period at the moment as far as funds are concerned. This hospital is a blessing for hundreds of cancer patients who, otherwise too poor to afford the expensive treatment, are being treated for free. It will be a shame to have the hospital close its doors to these patients due to a lack of funds.
They have offices and accounts in banks all over Pakistan and abroad where donations can be made. Their website can be visited for more details:
www.shaukatkhanum.org.pk
Here are some websites someone very kindly provided of other organizations working in Pakistan:
www.citizensfoundation.com - literacy
www.care.org.pk - literacy

re AH#79
Thanks for the impressive list. It provides an excellent snapshot of the variety of organizations/societies working in Pakistan - sadly I had not the foggiest of the amount of work that is being done in Pakistan - irrespective of the scale. I plan to explore the various references you have provided. I wonder if it might be a good idea to initiate a project aimed at getting in touch with all of them/setting up their web pages - however basic - and providing more of an outlet domestic as well as international - some of them of course will have their own sites but I suspect a significant majority will not. Anyway, its just a thought. Thanks a million - for the list and the effort.
cheers
