well we cant just say what is written in the article is not as it is in with desis. we do try to force our mates if from other cultures adopt to our cultures. why forcibly i have no idea! we at our end in Pakistan do have a very wrong idea that all women in the west are loose characters ( i could have better phrased it) because we guage them from our barometer which is wrong. Okay all are not as saintly as we are they are not from red light district either and not all married women sleep here and there as in Bold & The Beautiful. I have known one for 14 years and she is inner part of me and we accept each other the way we are. I know it would be difficult to make folks understand the feel but it is not that i have felt this with her alongside. We were least bit physical and the greatest inner feeling i get from her. She fears will it be as in the article? Will it? I say not always! Not with US!

If someone expects you to adopt a new religion, smack them around and wish them well on their journey to ignoniminy. Requiring someone to change religions to facilitate marriage is utterly disgusting. And a sign of a rather insecure religion.

Since brain represents only learning experiences though many faculty, abstracting Brain as the sole connecting circuit in abstraction is at most mental jugglery.

Karl Marx and Engels have written role of hand or manipulation of instruments etc in the development of brain (according to their perpective).

Spirituality of prophet PBUH is a continuous struggle in his life for God`s message. And spiritual aspects are only to give strength to that great struggle.

jeanieahsan #144 While cultural arrogance and lack of tolerance for differences is unfortunately one reason (as the Hindu-Muslim moronic mudslings on Chowk testify), I think conservatism is another. However, I know of instances where Pakistani men and their non-Pakistani (typically Western) wives have kept their separate religions. And their children have grown up to be fine, well-adjusted adults who are as much as home in Pakistan as they are in their mother`s country. You can tell that to your Paki soulmate if he puts forth the ``children will be confused`` argument.

What is it with this latent arrogance that any change should come from the non-desi girl, and the more change the better? As far as conversion is concerned, it can obviously only ever be one way.

expectation from my family for him to adjust to my values and culture - even my religion?

Studebaker #139 I was just having a bit of fun, so please dont take my comments so seriously. I am sure you are a learned psychiatrist and neurologist, and are doing a fine job of making your patients well again.

As for genetics being ``old wine in new bottles``: I am very surprised you say that: they have found what is in effect the recipe for life and the implications are boundless. Medicine is undergoing a revolution even as we speak, as are a variety of industries ranging from agro-industry to computing to pharmaceuticals to energy. We may well be one of the last couple of generations who are destined to die before we are hundred rather than live for a far, far, greater period (potentially forever): and you think nothing is going on!

Also, I read the Newsweek article and it is not really about genetics and religion but about neurology and the ``spiritual experience`` (of the Sufi type in Islamic tradition, for example, even though the article uses examples mostly from Christianity and Buddhism to explain). I thought it made sense, although it is not an earthshaking advance relative to other advances like the ones in genetics mentioned above, or in computing sciences that are currently changing the world.

Since neurology is your field, your comments would be very interesting and I look forward to seeing them.
