``i think motherhood takes chutzpa. ive just

been around a baby and my god, that is one

time consuming, attention hogging human

being. pint sized but powerful.``

Or maybe motherhood BRINGS chutzpa.. at least to the mothering/nurturing enterprise.

``Time Consuming?``... Oh yeah! With 57 channels and nothing on, not to mention 57 more worthwhile (second) careers worth considering what right has this little interpolator got to make such selfish demands on our time, haiN!?

Ok.. time to switch channels now... :)

rgds,

PM

Shandana,

Ignore hubby, thats what I do. There really isnt much of a choice when he calls up your mother and complains you no longer talk, only scream and would someone pls take you away for a few years. And then they have the audacity to giggle over it. You dont know how lucky you are, everything that can come out in the morning puking session, comes out.

Cheers :)

Binifer

binifer,

finally! someone else who seems to be just as cranky and irritable. in the last one month i`ve had people tell me what i biatch i am and how i have a massive problem with my `highly agressive communication style`..hubby even asked when it was all over who the baby would be. thought he was being funny...have to confess i don`t have the pukes though, just the nausea :)

sound..thanks :)

PM and MastRam

Whenever someone tries to analyze some extremely beautiful human emotions, I am reminded of a Hindi song,

`` Humne dekhee hai un aankhoN ki mahakati khushboo

Haath se choo ke use rishtoN ka ilzaam na do

Sirf ahsaas hai yeh rooh se mahsoos karo

Pyar ko pyar hi rahane do koi naam na do.``

Anyways, MastRam must get the credit for his scholarly analysis of the ``ambivalence`` during the initial phase of the motherhood. Steven Pinker in his book ``How the Mind works`` also puts forward a similar argument based on evolutionary mechanisms to explain this state. If some women dont supposedly feel this state, it may be due to the heavy duty conditioning of their mind by the social expectations and norms that mask their true feelings.

(...Ambulate like a duck for the benefit of men like us..)

How about i sit on you and `men like you` for the benefit of some blood running to your brains and maybe jump starting them? Shove it cupcakes; pregnant women are cranky and often violent and usually very heavy.

I don`t get the `ambivalence` in the piece. At best there seems to be a nervous resignation.

Funny, but my Mom, who went through six pregnancies reports having never experienced ambivalence. Says but for the morning sickness, the emottions ranged from contentment to elation. But what did she know-- naiive fifties-housewife that she was, habouring such silly illusions as of motherhood being a `real` profession, and of her life being but for the service of her children! And poor, unpaDh thing taht she was, didn`t even have Haig, D (1993) to tell her it was okay-- even natural-- to feel her body was being being taken over by hostile forces!

Shandana, one word of advice if I may.... EMBRACE!

luv,

Pat.

Shandana

My last post to you did not get through. What is wrong with asking you if you sometimes with your hear shoved into the pot, puking your intestines out, feel like killing your huband? Funny people, these chowk staffers.

Are you glowing? I am and hate it when people walk up and go `oh glowy!` Feel like turning around and smacking em hard. My third month and I`m as sick as a baby hen. All tiring and confusing and mostly irritating but somehow very nice and often funny also. Ambivalence is cool :)

Shandana,

Last night, sitting late at the office, I got a cup of coffee and read an old article of yours ``Whay I`m proud to be a Pakistani``.

Hoping for a break from the usual TNT/Jinnah/Islamic-ummah buck, I clicked on the link... and was not disappointed....

Just taking this opportunity to make a wish that you are blessed with a bright, chubby lil baby girl who grows up in the Pakistan of your article and dreams.

And hope that one day she and her generation can look at the embittered old men across and within their borders with a degree of sympathy for what they did: wrong and right.

God bless....

Sound

Isn`t it amazing how another person takes over your body and rearranges things inside. The ambivalence is the least one should expect. Besides there`s going to be 18 more years of controlling your life. Happy motherhood!

PS: It will be wonderful. Really.

Shandana,

Ambivalence is completely normal, from what my healthy, happy, mother friends have told me; and what I mean by that is the understandable fear of this unknown, life changing, profound experience. It doesn`t mean anything negative; and it seems to me that the acknowledgement of these mixed feelings takes some of the edge off!

Best wishes, take good care of yourself and as Scout had rightly pointed out, expect to be treated as a queen! Also, let us know how it goes, from time to time.

best
