Shehryar Khan has done an excellent job here in presenting the Afghan refugee side of the coin and their lives in Pakistan. But unfortunately
there is still no good news for these people. Afghanistan is still a very
unstable country.

Ras Siddiqui

(P.S. now some of our people also need to visit the camps of the stranded Pakistanis in Bangladesh, also known as Biharis. They should not and cannot be ignored)

[Afghanistan was doomed the day Afghanis refused to accept the Durand Line and recognize Pakistan in 1947.]

The reason is that the Durand Line was supposed to be the frontier for 99 years and then the frontier was to be re-negotiated. So, the Afghans were unwilling to recognize Pakistan and effectively concede the Durand Line as the permanent frontier.

Isn`t it strange that Pakistanis think that India is in the wrong when India claims the McMahon Line to be the Indo-Tibetan Frontier but are so defensive about the Durand Line? But then it has always been one rule for the Islamist thugs and another rule for the kaffirs.

[Throughout its life, Pakistan has been bent on destroying itself and its neighbours. Afghanistan shares India`s misfortune of being Pakistan`s neighbour. Complaining about Afghani refugees is like complaining about smoke rising from one`s gun after one has shot an innocent neighbour.]

Hear, hear.

{the afghanis, by and large, are incorrigible scoundrels, brigands and rascals }

...funny you should say that...a few weeks ago an afghan cab driver chewed my ear off saying pretty much the same thing about pakistanis, in less sophisticated but more colorful language...he even seemed to support the horrible heeng eaters in a case of enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend :) ...

Sucking up = destroying...okay, if you say so.

Now my knowledge is a bit weak but I had always thought that it was the Afghani Pakhtuns (who had been in power in one form or another in Afghanistan for a looong time) who wanted the area inside Pakistan and to turn it into a Pakhtunistan or something, hence the near war in the 60s. I was in the impression that the near war-like situation was initiated by the Afghanis. There was also some talk of gaining warm water ports by the acquisition of Baluchistan. Right?

I don`t think anyone`s complaining about the Afghani refugees. On the contrary, I believe Sheharyar is simply talking about the screwed up lives that the refugees lead.

Alpha Hussain,

Care to tell me what Pakistan`s been doing to Iran and China?

Afghanistan was doomed the day Afghanis refused to accept the Durand Line and recognize Pakistan in 1947. Since then Pakistani armed forces have been out to take over Afghanistan. Throughout its life, Pakistan has been bent on destroying itself and its neighbours. Afghanistan shares India`s misfortune of being Pakistan`s neighbour. Complaining about Afghani refugees is like complaining about smoke rising from one`s gun after one has shot an innocent neighbour.

.... all right, all right, wipe those tears and come back to reality ........... the afghanis, by and large, are incorrigible scoundrels, brigands and rascals who are destined to live and die in misery ........ that wouldn`t be all that bad if they didn`t make us suffer in the process ........... the real tragedy of afghanis is that they have been deprived of the civilizing influence of western colonialism and have instead learned their lessons from barbarians like the mongols and the saudis ...................... for a short while during the russian occupation there was some hope that they might enter the nineteenth century, but the fools didn`t know what was good for them ............and nothing has changed since the americans got rid of the one-eyed mullah his saudi mentor .................. in a couple of months hamid karzai will be either dead or in exile in rome, and the barbarians will be back to enjoying a life full of the joys of fratricide, patricide, and plain old homicide ................and i can say all this with impunity because i am a bona fide descendant of abdali baba, the brigand who once ransacked delhi ..............

.......... and now my cousins from the wrong side of the durand line have laid siege to pindi and islamabad after running over peshawar and quetta ............for god`s sake, they have taken over pindi and half of islamabad ........ i know it is hard not to feel sorry for their little kids with bare feet and rosy cheeks rummaging through the garbage dumps and stealing manhole covers and laundry off the wash line, but the fact of the matter is that they have never had it this good in their own god-forsaken country .......... and not all of them are poor and indigent ........go check out the bazaars in G-8 and G-9 in Islamabad - afghani restaurants, afghan clinics and beauty parlours, general stores, chemists and prostitutes ..........half the stores and all the sidewalk businesses in karachi company and aabpaara are owned by afghanis ....... most of them have pakistani identity cards in addition to the ration cards issued to refugees - they can vote and get free sugar and atta ....... how about that ?............ and how come the cda is quick to demolish katchi abadis inhabited by the poor people from saidpur and mansehra while the ``refugees`` from jalalabad (my gradma`s home town) can`t be touched ................

............. let`s take care of our own unwashed masses before we shed any tears for afghanis, palestinians and chechens .........

...... and on top of all this, according to a durrani (popalzai) uncle, peshawar had the hottest summer in the last fifty years because of the darn afghanis .......... perplexed, i asked, `` how come?``.......... `` these,,, these.....afgahnis are cutting down the trees and burning tires and garbage which has raised the temperature twenty degrees !`` .......... and now we know the rest of the story behind global warming ..................

re: umer

{I don`t see India doing anything about them. }

..actually, india is doing quite a bit...they`re building some hospitals...donating trucks and other industrial goods...some wheat...but as a poor country itself, india`s efforts will still be a drop in the bucket...the onus has to be on America and Europe...but that is beside the point...india did not contribute to the misery of the afghans...and most afghans acknowledge that...neither did the average pakistani i suppose...but the pakistani army and ISI most definitely did...unless you believe that taliban are not in any way responsible for afghanistan`s current state...

Sheharyar,

Thanks for the article and God bless you, fella.

Saxena

A lot of people are responsible for the destruction of the Joe average Afghani. It just depends on the angle one chooses to take and one can use different pieces to justify their statements.

The comment on Pakistan being partially responsible for the refugee crisis is correct. But `partly` could be anything: little? lots? 10%? 90%? Pakistan also happens to be the country, which housed millions of Afghanis. I don`t see India doing anything about them. In fact, I don’t see the world as a whole do $hit about the plight of the average Afghani. The last time I heard, donations were running dry. Isn`t Herat or some Afghani city the most mined city in the world with these antipersonnel butterfly mines, which resemble little toys and end up leaving the bony ends of your limbs looking like splintered wood?

And since we`re on the subjects of `partial responsibility`, the major blame for the refugee tsunami must go to the Soviet-Afghan war where the Soviets, in order to destroy the Mujahideen`s operational bases and lines of communication, burnt, destroyed, razed and mined villages so that they`d be flushed out and exposed. But that`s just a conventional search and destroy tactic employed in guerrilla warfare, right?

The Pakistani army and ISI rats` feeding of the Taliban is partly responsible for the mess Afghans are in. It is a damn shame that there are so many people like Romair who continue to support Mooshraf despite all the despicable things he`s done.

ooh how sad,

What a sad spectacle, afghans living in pakistan and they are poor. ooh how sad.

Pakistanis are crossing over to kashmir and getting killed, how about keeping a count on these jihadists, is it not sad that they are killed. No it is not they are the shaheeds, counted in heaven, not on earth. Again their families are taken care of, the charitable organisation ensure that the families of shaheeds are well of.

Poor are to be counted, the ones sent out to kill kafirs are not to be counted. A society that can train its own to kill and get killed cannot feel sad at the sight of poverty of alieens, sorry they are ummah.

Hold back the crockadile tears, the poor animal needs it. Pathetic pretensions of humanity by a solo pakistani. Shehriyar khan, just get off this job and herd the people for the next election, make it 99.99 percent.

This is the saddest article I have read on chowk to date. Simply written. So powerfully moving. What agency do u work for Shehreyar? Can u provide any more details pls?

Edhi is a truly great human being Alhamdulillah. It is so shameful for me to even think ``I wish there were more like him... I wish I could be like him``. Wishes, talk, will get us nowhere... action, we need action... :(.
