To Taj -- In Dutch Company

Hello,

Yes, the Taj mahal is a thing of beauty.

I had seen it 2/3 times and had thought, nice! But it had not touched me deeply.

Then, in maybe 80/81, some friends together decided and go to see at on a full moon night. It was possible then - no terrorists attacks etc!

The huge platform around the Taj was full of people - families with kids, student groups, foreign tourists with cameras. It was like a jatra, the crowds were lively and fairly noisy.

We sat with our back against the marble jaali - looking at the Taj. Slowly it became dark, darker and then the moon came up.

In the next half an hour or so, a silence enveloped us. All of them quiet, even the little children. The blaring tranistors, music, chatter, all of it.

Every minute the light seemed to be changing the amazing building - smoky, glowing, pearly, with inky shadows here and there.

The whole building seemed to be lit not from outside, but from within.

It is night the Taj Mahal came alive for me.

And today, no matter how many touts are there, how much noise is there, that one memory surpasses everything.

To know the Taj Mahal is to know beauty.

Zafar:
Thanks for sharing your journey with the mem. You perhaps did the right thing in not dwelling too much on the Taj Mahal part, since everyone already knows about it. But I can`t believe that you live in Delhi and hadn`t seen the Taj before [the next you will probably tell me that you had even visited Agra without going to the Taj:-)]. Did you take her to the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri? If not, you might find Fatehpur Sikri more interesting on your next visit.
And is gajra really an erotic symbol?
