While I am happy for the couple and the fact that the justice system for once did what it was supposed to do. I must say that as a societal trend I don`t care much for what transpired. What are we imbibing in our upcoming generation? It is ok to disobey your parents? Screw them over once you`re an adult because the legal machinery`s got your back?
What her parents did was wrong, plain wrong. But she`s lucky her Romeo didn`t do what some Romeos do and take her to Lahore, you all know what I mean. When one is young it is very easy to feel that you are being railroaded by your parents. No matter what someone tells me, 19 or 20 may be `legal age` in the eyes of the law but it is not an age when one is mature enough to make decisions that impact the rest of one`s life.
Irfan.

Beena:
This seems out of topic of this board but it relates to your work done recently I saw on Geo TV on Eqbal Ahmed. That was a really pride to know about a Pakistani scholar who had been a leading political theorist all over the world and been a revolutionary strategist in Algerian, Palestinian and Kashmir issues concerning Independence on humanitry basis.
That programme was very expensive regarding views on his work and the `thinking class` advocated his issues and tributed him.
Congrats to you and your team for doing such a wonderful job!

Im so happy to hear that this couple finally got to be togethor. I wish our court system would improve to the degree where such a result would be common rather than a rare event.

[So obviously all these honor killings and hudood ordinances only apply to the ordinary janta, while the rich and powerful in Pakistan seem to indulge in all kinds of unIslamic practices.]
That is because the poor do not swing, they fight.
;)

Most of these love marriages are a problem in rural India especially in the North.

Its funny how some problems are simply problems of the sub-continent and not merely of pakistan or India. I am glad that this particular couple had the courage to do what they did, very often women just give in and marry the guy their parents choose for them. Incidentally, these same woman become victims of abuse and end up committing suicide or burnt/killed by their one of their in-laws. It feels archaic just writing about these issues, so much of our youth is so beyond all this, but its a fact that many many women do not still have freedom and independence to do what work they like and marry who they like. I live in a metro so feel far removed from all this, so many Indian girls would relate strongly to it, I remember some of my friends married boys their parents chose for them, and not always were they 100% sure that they liked the boy and his family. Their personalities would go through this sea-change after they got married... they infact had no personalities at all after they got married, and I remember thinking I just could not relate to them anymore. I hope women begin to realise that they have rights, the same as any one else. They are free human beings, nobody can stop them from doing what they really want to do. Women give in more out of habit than anything else. I hope they wake up!!

Beena,
Looks like all this marital hassle is restricted to the lower middle class in Pakistan. I recently read ``My Feudal Lord`` by Tehmina `Tina` Durrani, the ex-wife of Ghulam Mustafa Khar, the former Chief Miniser of Punjab. Some of her exploits, especially her adulterous relationship with Khar, can easily be turned into a X rated movie. By coincidence, I heard that she just married Shabaz Sharif, the brother of Nawaz Sharif after a 4 year relationship. So obviously all these honor killings and hudood ordinances only apply to the ordinary janta, while the rich and powerful in Pakistan seem to indulge in all kinds of unIslamic practices.

I am glad Hameed didn`t get his way as I had feared he would (Sept, 2004.)
Best wishes to the couple.
Sadly, such cases are on the rise this side too, particularly in Punjab, Haryana and UP.

``The point is that the legal system did not let them down.``
Sorry Beena, that is not the conclusion, it only shows that some parents are chicken hearted or they do not know the laws of the country. A simple honour kiloing would have been the appropriate solution. let me remind you, the killers of samia sarwar who performed the ritual of honour killing in the office of asma jahangir was facilitated by the then CEO of the country. Pl also note that the jirga system is a legal process in Sindh and the pathetic parents should have taken the case to jirga.
You have drawn the wrong conclusion from the event, stupid application of the law will result in stupid outcomes, that should be the conclusion, and it is disheartening that the supreme law of pakistan and the sharia court has not yet intervened in this case.
