We can`t have a democratic government because the two main parties we have do not have any political credibility. We don`t want a military dictatorship because a democratic country is less isolated, more accountable. So what do we do?

In Zia`s times we had a rigid, autocratic dictatorship. In Musharraf, we have a benevolent, liberal dictatorship.

Unless we get involved in our country`s politics, unless we make our justice system work, our people are not going to benefit from increased incomes, better education and better health .

Overhauling everything and putting military generals at the helm of state institutions does not guarantee success.

If only Mr. Urstruly and people like him would start making as much noise when their jihadi brothers blow up hundereds of innocent people most of whom turn out to be fellow muslims.
Stop sounding like Qazi Hussain Ahmed. I`m sure you are more intelligent than that.
It`s so strange how you guys are always raving about stuff like Wana, Waziristan, F-16s, Dr. Qadeer Khan and never let out even a squeak when jihadi`s blow up mosques, kill women and children, or even when things like, crime, rape, heroin smuggling and usage occur right under your high and mighty noses. Shame.

Godot,

And lets not forget the military action by this dictator upon his people while using tanks and F-16s against the citizens of Pakistan. The indiscrimanet bombing has resulted in the lose of life of thousands of innocent women and children. HR orgs are quiet. What does it tell you - that is people of Pakistan are alone in their fight against regressive regime and oppressive neo-colonial aggressors.

Re: # 64 Godot

It is a good question. Ideally, it should be 1973 but we have to be ``pragmatic`` :), now shouldn`t we. Besides, the changes that were made by Zia have survived four democratically elected governments. If one of these governments can repeal the article 58(2) with a vote than it could have repealed all other ammendments as well - instead it introduced Shariah Bill to supplement them and had it passed through assembly to respond to the voice of people.

However, if a freely elected assembly restores the 1973 constitution to the level prior to the Zia, thru the procedures established in the constitution, then I have no objection to it as well.

Re: # 60 Godot

Musharaf is a curse that has descended upon Pakistan like no other. South American dictators seem pale in comparison. The international human rights organiztions are complacent and silent because they noramally enforce the western agenda and help demonize the target country. An example would be that of Abu Gharaib where human rights abuses took place for over year and half under their watchful eyes and they kept quite until US government itself decided to leak it to intimidate Muslims. The complacency of HR orgs has emboldened this tin pot dictator to this level that now he openly suggests Western governments to abolish their laws on human rights and rule their people with stern hand.

The police reform act that this dictator has imposed on Pakistan is gives Martial Law powers to this masquerade of a democracy. It is worst that Indian POTA law, which Indians were wise to abolish. The reform act gives police & (martial) law enforrcement authorities to detain any human being for indefinite period of time without charging him or notifying his relatives. The suspect has no right to an attorney and they are usually tortured in military dungeons. Apart from these ``disappearnces`` the number of political assasinations by ISI and other agents alone surpasses the ttal assassinated throughout the history of Pakistan. ISI has assassinated approximately 50+ ulema since 911. The political activists are on top of that. The CIA funded anti-Iran terririst orgs togetther with ISI have assassinated more Shias in bombings of Imam Bargahs than ever before.

Here is Editorial of the largest newspaper ``Jang`` that summarises the situation. If a government has no qualms about this extent of information printed in daily newspaper then imagine how bad the actual situation is:

``full restoration of Constitution of 1973 as it was on October 11, 1999.

Why 1999? Why not 1973?

Re: # 59 hamidm

No; the alternative is full return to constitutional democracy; the alternative is full restoration of Constitution of 1973 as it was on October 11, 1999. I know why you commie-turned-capatilists types are scared of this alternative. Because we have and we can beat you on not only the bullet but also the ballot. Personally, I would chose the ballot over the bullet. The power of the people always scraes the progeny of the collaborators of colonial powers - past and present.

Re: # 56
Fair enough. Even though pragmatism has very little to do with anything visionary. but thank you for calling me one. And yes I do support state`s violent intervention when it all boils down to battling holy psychotics. Because I truly am tired of worrying every time my brother or father go to the mosque for Friday prayers. And as for ``God`s green earth,`` I think we`re better off if it remains blue.

NfP

``a dictator who has been indicted by ICJ and wanted in several countries for the crimes against humanity. This is the dicttator who has tortured and murdered thosands of his own citizens for decades. This is the guy who ruled a country with fear and intimidation, when disappearnces and custodial killings of citizens were a norm``

Is that also true about Musharraf?

Re: # 58

like i said, anything is better than what totalitarians like the nazis, the communists and the mullahs propose........ at least you can get rid of unsavory characters like pinochet and other assorted dicatators - who can get rid of a khalifa or ameer-ul-momineen who claims to represent a cruel and vengeful god ?

........ i know the military is a very bad alternative, but compared to what you have to offer we are all better of with the goons in uniform ............

Re: # 57 hamidm

So you are suggesting that Pakistan should adopt the governance model of a dictator who has been indicted by ICJ and wanted in several countries for the crimes against humanity. This is the dicttator who has tortured and murdered thosands of his own citizens for decades. This is the guy who ruled a country with fear and intimidation, when disappearnces and custodial killings of citizens were a norm, we should follow this dictator? Is this your vision, your manifest for new Pakistan? And you godless people accuse mullah of siding with military fascists- tsk tsk. Sometimes I feel sorry for the mental state of your kind and the apathy you feel for your fellow citizens.
