After she had been sentenced, Lyndie England had the grace (I use this word deliberately) to apologize to the former inmates of Abu Ghraib and to her fellow soldiers for the actions.
This is more than can be said for her bosses in the military or outside. Or indeed for any of our military people who have kept Pakistan tied to a leash all these years just as much as in that famous picture of Lyndie.

jesus christ, lady! - leo must be turning in his grave - equating lyndie`s smile to that of mona lisa - lyndie is either drunk or stoned out of her mind in that picture - what do you find so mysterious about that.
would like to point one historical inaccuracy - these ``proud`` people as you call them have been subjugated for rather long periods of time - they have been the slaves of persians, greeks, mongols, turks, english, etc. etc.
the pictures, i agree were quite disturbing.

All I can is say is this::--
People smile more in Western culture than in East.
I have never met a native DESI in India who greets strangers on the street by smiling(there are some exceptions). In west you meet people on the street elevators etc and they all wish each other a good day, I have never seen a DESI smiling at Subziwala before buying vegetables, here it is almost mandatory.
In fact over there if you smile it is considered a stupid thing to do, and sometimes can land you in trouble.
Why above is relevant to Lyndsay is because of the upbringing; she is smiling because she genuinely thinks what she did was funny at that time.
In Other parts of world prisoners would be mutilated and bodies carved or heads chopped off.
I think what we are seeing in Lyndsay`s trial is American Military Justice, they are apolitical branch.

This write-up appears to contain a lot of buck-waas and propaganda. What that lady did was not sanctioned by any body – people will always read into her actions what suits their own motives! Reading so much in the “smile” of a low-order private – I wonder what you would have made out of the Mona Lisa.
[A number of factors, all of which contribute to driving home the point that the Iraqis are a powerless and dominated people.]
Is it, really? And they were powerful and free as a bird under Saddam! Let’s face it – perhaps the problem is not about being dominated – but by being dominated by those of another religion!
[It`s common knowledge that Muslims consider dogs to be unclean and unholy.]
Oh, really!
[But what can`t be denied is the element of pleasure. We don`t smile when we are unhappy.]
Maybe you don’t (indeed!) – but most people smile when they are POSING for a picture.

Bad mouthing can be made into an art form. With some people, practice does NOT make perfect. You sir, fit that profile! Do you care to elaborate your own lineage – is that even known?

huh? Did you just write it? Or did they just decide to publish it now?
Whoever made that decision has got unresolved issues as deep as Lynddie England.
