The Syrian Vice President Abd al-Halim Khaddam wound up his two-day visit

to Tehran on Wednesday. During his stay, Khaddam held talks with Iranian

officials on bilateral ties as well as the latest developments in the

region.

With regard to the current political situation in the Middle East,

Khaddam`s visit was of great significance. In fact, Syria along with

Lebanon, is in frontline of the struggle against the hegemonic policies of

the Zionist regime in the occupied lands.

The Israeli government under Sharon`s direction has recently increased its

pressure on both Syria and Lebanon in addition to continuing its

aggression against the Palestinian people.

However, the Syrian and Lebanese authorities have stood up to Israel

pressures and continue to strengthen their anti-Zionist stance for the

support of the Palestinian cause.

Within the framework of its principled policies and ideals, the Islamic

Republic of Iran considers the support to Muslims` rights, especially

those of oppressed Palestinian nation, an irrefutable basis of its foreign

policy.

Therefore, one of the most important aspects of Khaddam`s visit to Tehran

is the renewed emphasis during his meetings with Iranian officials on the

two countries` common viewpoints and their strong stance vis--vis the

hegemonic policies of the Zionist regime in the region.

Despite the political pressures exerted by the U.S. and the Zionist

regime, Iran and Syria have had a great role in frustrating the Israeli

plots in the past two decades.

In fact, one of the significant aspects of Tehran-Damascus cooperation is

its impact on the Middle East developments and strengthening of the stance

so far taken by Muslim countries against the Zionist regime. The Syrian

and Iranian officials further discussed enhancement of bilateral economic

ties as one of the strong pillars of Tehran-Damascus cooperation.

Concerning the new intimidation of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon

aimed to provoke Syria and Lebanon to wage a war in the region, it is not

improbable that in order to increase the unprecedented pressure on Islamic

world, the Zionist regime is trying to create a new adventure.

With regard to this fact, close consultations between the Muslim

countries, exchange of visits, coordination in their stance and

cautiousness about the increasing threats of Tel Aviv are of great

importance.

New Delhi, August 20: The Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), against which the government is contemplating imposing a ban for its anti-national activities, on Monday sought to defend itself saying it was not preaching enmity against other communities but only calling them towards Islam.

“SIMI do not preach enmity against other communities but call them towards Islam,” said a SIMI statement issued at a press conference in Delhi.

“We even call L.K. Advani to embrace Islam, the statement signed by SIMI press secretary Shahbaz Hussain said.

Reacting to the government`s charges that SIMI’s activists were involved in anti-national and terrorist activities in the country, he charged that Advani “himself led the rath yatra in 1991 leaving behind a trail of death and destruction.”

Reacting to demands by various state governments for ban on SIMI, he added that these “have become tools in the hands of the saffron brigade”.

Mumbai`s communal riots of December 1992 and the January 1993 bomb blasts have scarred the city forever. Not surprisingly, those responsible are yet to be brought to book.

Last week, after nine years, the Mumbai police arrested their former police commissioner Ramdeo Tyagi and 17 former officers in connection with the killings in the Suleiman Bakery. Subsequent to these arrests, the Maharashtra government has now given the assurance that justice will be done. Speaking to NDTV, Minister of State for Home, Kripa Shankar has said that the Srikrishna Commission Report looking into the riots will be implemented in a time span of two months.

For many like Abdulla Kasim`s family, who live on Mohammed Ali Road, the scars of the 1993 riots are still fresh. It is in these areas that the city`s police force, turned on the people, instead of protecting them.

Thirty-one police officers have been indicted in the report, but no action has begun against 14 of them. The report recommended reopening of 1365 cases. Only five cases have so far been reopened. Less than 50 people have received compensation from the government. Another 85 are waiting for their compensation.

Though the Special Task Force has taken some initiatives to implement the recommendations of the Srikrishna Commission Report, these initiatives lack political will. Human rights activists say that both the law and the court order are the real strength behind the task force`s recent actions. However, the focus now has shifted to the results of these recent arrests as it has taken the authorities nine years to even start the process of justice.

Hindu girl, 19, commits suicide after marrying Muslim

Bharti Barot, a 19-year-old girl who had embraced Islam to get married to one Salim Shaikh from the same area in Sabarmati of Ahmedabad, reportedly set herself ablaze at the Hindu Mahasabha office in the city`s Raipur area on Thursday afternoon.

But mystery shrouds her death, as police are confused about how Bharti managed to get kerosene at the Hindu Mahasabha office, even as Mahasabha activists including President Dashrath Patel were present at the time.

Even her parents, who had taken Bharti to the Mahasabha for ``counselling``, pleaded ignorance about her committing suicide.

Bharti was in love with Salim, who hails from the Bakra Mandi area of Sabarmati, for the last few years, despite strong objection from her parents.

She was apparently tortured mentally and physically several times by her parents for moving around with Salim, but to no avail.

On July 11, she eloped with Salim without saying anything to her parents, converted to Islam and got married in a local mosque before finally registering the marriage in a city court.

The very next day, she sent their marriage documents to her parents by post, while Salim did the same.

``On July 12, her father Kanubhai Barot lodged a complaint of illegal confinement against Salim with us and we started search operations,`` said Inspector of Sabarmati police station, P S Mehra.

She was found on August 6 and police took her to Sabarmati police station from where she was sent to the Women`s Home in Odhav, run by the state government.

``But surprisingly, her parents managed to get her from the Home without any instructions from us or any court order, which is something queer,`` Mehra said.

Bharti was then brought to the Hindu Mahasabha office in Raipur by her parents for a ``purification`` (Shuddhikaran) ceremony that was supposed to take place on Thursday afternoon in the presence of Mahasabha activists and Dashrath Patel.

``Before the function, she was asked by Dashrath to take a bath in the Mahasabha office bathroom, where she ultimately set herself ablaze,`` said DCP (zone-III), R D Makadiya.

When asked about how Bharti had managed to get kerosene and matchsticks in the bathroom of the Mahasabha office, Makadiya only said: ``We have to check.``

Local residents, however, said they did not hear any screaming or smell anything burning. Police are suspicious as the area where the Mahasabha office is located is very crowded.

``We will find out after the forensic examination and post mortem report,`` said Makadiya.

Meanwhile, her father, Kanubhai, known as a VHP activist, showed no remorse over the incident. ``She did it as per her own will,`` he said.

Secretary of VHP, Karnavati city, Jaideep Patel said: ``Perhaps she committed suicide because of tortures by the Muslim boy and his friends. Muslims here have been creating lot of problems with Hindu girls.``

But, he declined from adding more about the incident, saying: ``We are acquiring details.``

Khadia police has also registered a case following the ``suicide``, city police sources said. The Commissioner of Police, P C Pande, also visited the spot on Thursday evening.

The dead body of the victim has been sent for post mortem, police sources said.
