Rashid sahab,

Do you perchance know whose sher this is? I think it is by Riaz Khairabadi but could never confirm it.

The Ancient Art of Making Gurrha

Gurh fried in ghe is one of the tastiest things I have ever come across. The trick is to make ghee hot and then dip pieces of gurh in it for a short time.

In my part of india, especially in the villages, it was rude to serve water to a guest without a piece of gurh..... and fried gurh was for an especially honoured guest.

There are few smells as heady as the smell of freshly made gurh and nothing like a tall steel glass of tea with a lump of gurh to go with.

Been years since I had gurh fried in ghee....

Thanks Zeejah for this tasty thing.

[I also discovered that Dhaka is named after a Hindu goddess, Dhakeshwri, to which an ancient temple is dedicated in Dhaka. But what I found even more interesting was that none of my muslim friends in Dhaka (of which I made many during my stay) knew about this origin of their city`s name.]

Well, no. It is actually the other way round. The name Dhakeshwari (literally - goddess of Dhaka) is derived from Dhaka

The name Dhaka is apprently derived from ``Dhaak`` trees which may have been in abundance at that time. There are many such names around:

eg.

Plassy: Palash

Champaran:Champa Aranya or Forest of Champa trees

Tehelka Tapes: Modernising Media Morality

``Corruption won`t stop as long as hate mongers are ruling Bharat``.

I agree, also IMO, the fundameantalists and communalists are always, everywhere, more corrupt and unscrouplous than any other ruling group.

Just one thing though, how exactly one defines a unified Bharati culture? I guess I am not very comfortable with the idea of a single culture for a country like india........it does have ominous portents.

Sincerely

Ras Siddiqui

It is interesting that when India is being literally dragged kicking and screaming to the negotiating table over Kashmir, there is suddenly a ``Tehelka``.

Back over to Urstruly & Co.

Ras

Siddiqui sahab,

As far as formulating conspiracy theories , I used to think Indian politicians are the masters. You sir, however are the real ``Master`` of the art. What an eyeopener. Good job etc. etc.

Sincerely

Mirza pyare,

A very good and well researched piece written with all the innocence and naivete of a round eyed schoolboy. Rather refreshing amidst all the cynicism.

``Why`` indeed ``why don`t they condemn the indians``

They wont because they need to use us...whether as a counterweight to PRC or a dumping ground for their obsolete technology or a marketor whatever.

The world is a harsh and hard place, there are no

Marquis of Queensbury rules here. I thought this was common knowledge by now.

Open Letter to Prime Minister Vajpayee
Posted by ba_kait Mar 5, 2001 04:36 pm
The documentary that Sadna refers to was called ``Ram ke Naam`` and was available on VHS before its telecating on the TV. It was a courageous effort by Anand.

I guess the present indian government populated by people like Advani, Joshi and Uma Bharati is in no position to condemn the Taliban. The real losers will be the Afghan people, who at present are trying to keep their heads over water and barely succeeding in doing so. They are caught between UN sanctions on one hand and the mad mullahs on the other.

Someone mentioned that the majority of Indians outside India are supporting the BJP and VHP. That is unfortunate and true. Also true is the fact that the upper and middle classes in India (at least in the north)are the major support groups of BJP. But equally true seems to be the fact that a large section of the educated, middle class Pakistanis are supporting the worst kind of fundamentalists in the name of jihad in Kashmir. In this context, my arguments are not against suporting a position.....rather,in the name of support, whom are you supporting.

Anyway, all power to people like Patwardhan, wherever and whoever they may be!

I think you mean ``nindak near-e rakhiye,

aangan kuti samay-e``

Incidently, there is another, somewhat similar

``nindak baba beer hamara

binhi kauri bahe bichara

aapan doobe, aur ko taare

aisa preetam ,paar utaar-e``

(I think it is by Dadu, a contemporary of Kabir)

Take care

Urstruly(Reply #: 108)

``A few centuries ago when Islam was spreading exponentially all around the world and ancient pagan religions were being swept away into oblivion like a gust of wind sweeps a bunch of straws-Hinduism stood its ground``

May I suggest:

``Kuch baat hai ki apni,

mit-ti nahin hai hasti,

sadiyon raha hai dushman,

daur-e-jahan hamara``

Also,

`` The Muslims of India are like the offsprings of the dead queen. They are destined to only one fate``

Come on now,you ARE depressed... pop a pill or two..or watch PTV, it is really good.. can make you laugh.

Take care

I think mauch of what Farzana has said is truth: In its quest for power, the BJP took the help of the worst kinds of fanatics who are now demanding their pound of flesh. What baffles me is why at this juncture Vajpayee had to utter such absurdities as `Mandir wahin banega`and `national sentiments` .Had it been national sentiment, the BJP would have 3/4 majority in the parliament- and they know it. So, either the RSS has tightened its screws(I doubt it as they LOVE power and will not jeoperdise it): or, dear old liberal, good man in the bad party- ABV has finally realised he is the 11th incarnation of Vishnu and that it is no longer necessary to hide the khaki knickers(hideous stuff, looks funny too).

Alternatively, it may be a `salve` to the `dharamyodhas`of VHP/BD etc. etc.(our local version of Jihadis).

Whatever it may be, the situation looks fucked up.

Fianlly, why is everyone so insistent that Farzana reloacte to Paki land.In responses to her last post, there were many offers of `one way ticket`etc.to the `Terra Pura`.I personally like her here.

And now, I shall sit and watch the `old guard/warriors/maharathis` have a go at one other, India, Pakistan- from thence to Hindus, Muslims- with some words about `showing the real face`, gloatings, counter gloatings,- my idea of fun, exactly.

Ciao guys and happy hunting.

PS: Urstruly, I shall try to look up and post a `nazm`by Fahmida Riyaz(I hope I have the correct name) that had caused such an uproar at JNU mushaira sometime in the near past. Also, gloating hasn`t helped anyone.BTW, the disputed sites are about 3000.Think of what their demolition will do-you shall gloat and gloat.

``I gloated and gloated but little thought/

what a joy(!?)to Urstruly the show had brought``

(Sorry Wordsworth).

Farzana(reply to reply #338)

It was in jest... nothing serious(guess next time I joke, i shall draw that stupid smiler:-))

Incidently, in this `Mahabharat`that is going on, is any of the `posters`from Kashmir?(either side will do).

Ciao

PS: Pardesi,pardesi, jana nahin...

I have been following Farzana`s article and the (more interesting) responses from the `gentle readers`. WOW! what are u guys trying to do? Burn the net or something... anyway, two things have been proved:

1. People from the subcont. are the biggest `bakchods`(pardon me, but this is a non offensive word in Aligarh)

2. The original article has long been forgotten , and now old scores are being settled... Dhoti walas Vs.Lota Walas...

Get a life, guys.. and Jay,Akash; YLH,guys take care that you don`t burst a blood vessel or something:-)

Bi Farzana; jhagda kara ke tamasha dekh rahi ho...
