A Decision to Regret

I havent read Druckers article yet but i dont think I am making too much of an extrapolation. The fertility rates in Pakistan are still very high even by S. Asian standards.

OTOH this finally disproves the theory that you cant be angry at the world if you are getting enough in the sack :-) (look at Mullah Omar for instance :-))

``Berlin fighting a retreating German army, which twiced counter-attacked the allies at Arnhem``

Sorry to step in, but surely you cant count Arnhem as a German counterattack.

Finally someone hits on it!!!

``Pak population is currently estimated at 140 million. I read recently that its ANNUAL growth rate is 2.8 percent! Rounding it up to 3% and allowing for compounded growth, it means in thirty years Pak population will be 280 million by 2030``

It is exactly this coming population bulge in Pakistans that is the problem (look at the under 14 population). I encourage you to peruse through the UNDP Human Development Report for 2001. Let me give you some indicative figures (from the CIA wolrd factbook):

Pakistan:

Age structure:

0-14 years: 40.47% (male 30,131,400; female 28,391,891)

15-64 years: 55.42% (male 40,977,543; female 39,164,663)

65 years and over: 4.11% (male 2,918,872; female 3,032,270) (2001 est.)

Population growth rate: 2.11% (2001 est.)

Birth rate: 31.21 births/1,000 population (2001 est.)

Death rate: 9.26 deaths/1,000 population (2001 est.)

India:

0-14 years: 33.12% (male 175,630,537; female 165,540,672)

15-64 years: 62.2% (male 331,790,850; female 308,902,864)

65 years and over: 4.68% (male 24,439,022; female 23,687,200) (2001 est.)

Population growth rate: 1.55% (2001 est.)

Birth rate: 24.28 births/1,000 population (2001 est.)

Death rate: 8.74 deaths/1,000 population (2001 est.)

``I am afraid then you havent followed your politics closely. We know very well, that such sentiments are openly expressed by the coalition partners of BJP such as Shiv Sena``

this is a good one. Last I heard Balasaheb (the saffron gangster of bombay) was not able to control Thane (30 km from Mumbai) and he dreams of Sainiks rampaging through the streets of Rawalpindi!!

Stuka,

Thanks for the explanation. I did mean Javed Nasir`s attempt to set up the PGPC as a focus for disaffected Sikhs. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Top Ten Tips For Ambitious Indian Prime Ministers

....

See this is what drives me mad (sometimes :-)). How are we expected to look at the grey areas of complex issues like Kashmir when you are unable to glance with the slightest criticality (is that a word?) at your complicity in them.

``The police said Mohammed Abdul Samad, an assistant in the Directorate of Marine Engineering at the Naval Headquarters, had been passing sensitive information to Gulam Shabbir Khan of the Pakistan high commission.

Giving details, the police said investigations had revealed that Samad had introduced two more persons, Francis Prakash and Babul Nath Maurya, to Khan.``

This is indeed funny!! Secularism is so deep in the blood that even selling the country occurs in Amar-Akbar-Anthony style (note the names: Mohammed Abdul Samad, Francis Prakash, Babul Nath Maurya)

A Journey Into Afghanistan

``That`s what happened in 1993 when a certain Brigadier Kamal Alam that India would simply collapse after the Bombay mayhem. In the event, it turned out to be another Pearl Harbour``

I lived in Bombay then, I remember standing near Dadar TT when the first bomb went off at the Plaza cinema. I remember the people walking by clutching a handkerchief to their wounds. I still remember the blood on their shirts. I remember my mother crying on the phone once I finally got through. I still remember the rage I felt that day. The people who did this still live comfortable affluent lives. But how can we blame the Pakistanis when Sajjan Singh and Tytler still roam the streets as free men...

I remember Mr Hamdani having some doubts about the Javed Nasir - SGPC link. The following from the latest TFT might help:

``General Javed Nasir is out of Auqaf after a disastrous tenure and an abortive gamble with the setting up of Pakistan`s own Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.``

``jayberg@mossad.gov.is``

the country suffix for Israel is ``il``. Are you sure you have not been double crossed into working for the Syrian intelligence and are sending your intelligence reports to Damascus instead :-)?

Ref Harimau

``If you translate that into reality, Pakistan doesn`t need twice the army it had in 1971. With only half the pre-1971 country to defend, can you suggest that Pakistan cut its army to one-fourth the current size?``

In defence of ROmair, he has consistently advocated increased reliance on the nuclear deterrent (sp?) and cutting of the Pakistani military budget.

Ref Fuzair,

``Tell me, just out of idle curiosity, were you one of those left-wing intellectuals who had the courage to support the Afghan communist coup and the subsequent Soviet invasion of Afghanistan?``

Excellent stuff you are dishing out here Sir! Maybe one day the Afghans will come to realize that Indira Gandhi was their only true friend in the world :-)(I wouldnt hold my breath though LOL)

Dear Ms Scout,

``Out of the 150 million people that inhabit Pakistan, and of the millions who live elsewhere, did Newsweek reporters interview or question 80% of that number?``

Madam, far be it for me to question the quality of our education but doubts creep into my mind :-)

(Sigh, If only Pakistanis could take more interest in one ISI and not the other)
