Reforming the Armed Forces
Posted by khattur Jun 14, 2001 12:54 am

OUR BRAIN DRAIN?

It was pleasant surprise to see the name of Mohatrem Mushahid Hussein at the forum of Chowk. It means, he is back in form and ready for action. He belongs to Pakistani intelligentia. But unfortunately he is no different than his fellow intellectuals who always keep on enhancing their “market price”. Their God-gifted brains, which are supposed to do some good for our country and poor masses, always drain in the direction of money, fame, and a whole lot of other earthly possessions.

With due respect, I’ll inform Mr.Mushahid that no sensible person in Pakistan is against the reforms in our Armed Forces. Mushahid Hussein has been playing a very powerful role in Pakistan Govt, headed by a fascist Nawaz Sharif. At that time, we did not find Mr.Mushahid saying a word at any forum in favor of the reforms in Armed Forces. We always saw him uttering same words, “Pakistan afwaj kee qeyadat mazbooy hathoon men haey, Wazeer azam aur Musallah afwaj ke darmeyan ikhtalaf kee khabreen disinformation ka hissa haen”. When in fact, his fovorite leader was trying his best to bring all Corps Commanders against each other and sabotage Pakistan Armed Forces. Why did Mr.Mushahid not advise his P.M. to bring a reforms bill for the Armed Forces in Pakistan National Assembly and Senate instead, where his Party was even able to give record majority to our President Rafiq Tarar. In fact, at that time, Nawaz Sharif was in search of a Rafiq Tarar in the Armed Forces too. Being a luck guy like he was always, he found one too but it was too late at that time.

Now when a General dumped Mushahid Hussein and forgot for a quite some time, he has found the reason behind all the ills of Pakistan, reforms in the Armed Forces.

In the end, I’ll dare to ask Mr.Chappu Mian (#71) that you are not allowing Urstruly for thinking and planning sentimentally about his dear Pakstan but it is Ok with you that such mavericks, cool-headed, and so-called intellectuals of our country are openly showing their double-stanadard about our Armed Forces.

Urstruly # 60!

WAH BUDHO WAH!

Urstruly seems to be an expert on this topic. I dont know why he forgot to mention the famous quote about Wah while digging the great history of origination of the word Wah. `` Wah Budho Wah `` sometime ``Wah Budhoo Wah``. While coming from Hasan Abdal to Taxila on G.T Road, first comes the original village named Wah, then another village, Budho (dont be mistaken as Budhoo in Urdu) and after that Wah Cantonment Area comes. Thus, the term Wah Budho Wah comes into existence.

Shirin!

I can attest that urdu version of folk poem I quoted in my post is for sure the original piece of Urstruly. So u can give him the full Dehliyana credit.

Hana!

U mentioned about tilliyan vali chappel being made in your village. The most famous tilliyan vali chappel is made in a village named Kufri near Talagang,is it right and u r from Kufri or what? I love these tillay vali khers. I have two pairs here in States. Mostly I wear them with Kurta Shalwar but sometimes with Jeans too. My American friends admire them even though they dont know Imran Khan who made these shoes more famous.

MITTI KA RISHTA!

Bravo Hana Malik Akram Sb!

Reading this rooted in the soil article, I wished to be at Maasi Baano`s Dhok. I belong to the same area of Pakistan. This piece of Hana reminded me a very famous poem of our district Attock`s great poet Abdullah Malik.

gHar ki cHakki peeson geen

rOOkhi sOOkhi khaon geen

mAan man teray saath

aB shaHer naHeen jaoon geen

It`s your own mitti (janam bhoomi) which can let us fit in and be accepted. U can be a part of another culture or halla gulla for sometime. But u cant fit in there,no matter what.

Hana`s description of her village also reminded me another poem of I think Hafeez Taib.

vAnen Neen mAnji hOve

siRRay thalle bAAn hove

aPna gAran hove

sHamla uChera Rakkhan

Hath vich batera rakhan

sangeyan che naan Hove

apna geran hove

Thanks Hana for taking me in my imaginatioon to your Maasi`s dhok. I`m not a follower of Ted Kezzenski but in the words of Allama Iqbal,

bezaar hoon man in sang e mar mar ke sillon se

Thanks to the Almighty and technology that we can have what we can think of. But I`m afraid this abudence has taken us to a point where we want to get rid of everything but our peace of mind.

Dr.Pervez Hoodbhoy! Sir! I`m proud of you!

The more prominent names in the history are not of those who are part of history but those who make history. In doing so, Dr.Hoodbhoy has made our unfortunate country`s `not-so-proud` history proud for a while.

Although soorathaal(current affairs) in our land of pure has come to an end where, according to Late Raees Amrohvi.

Dukh ke alam men aziyat naheen hoti

khushi ke alam men musarrat naheen hoti

Ham nen dekhaen han voh tamashe ke

Ab kissi bhee alam men harat naheen hot

Translation for our young desi folks who do not understand Urdu.

W H O C A R E S ???????????????

But Dr.Hoodbhoy has taken a step, it could become an example for those good and honest persons in different fields that they can at least show their disapproval of status quo.

The validity of Dr.Hoodbhoy`s point of view comes from no other but our government by not showing any concern.

The Day When God Died

Response to PM #26!

INTENTIONALLY OR UNINTENTIONALLY U DEAR PM!

My dear historian PM! U r the only one who really impressed me and first time on chowk, I found someone who responded in the way, it should be. Otherwise, most of the time, I find people beating about their own bushes.

As u acknowledged at first my definition of death of God but u intentionally or unintentionally ommitted my insistance upon sticking with Urstruly`s definition.

I did admitted that billion and trillion of examples of the death of God could be presented meaning that I`ll provide just some.

Another important thing that by the death of God, I mean the death of one`s soul, the death of humanity, and the death of conscience.

U intentionally or unintentionally put forward your religious agenda which I did not and dont want to indulge with.

The article we are discussing is written in the context of American society although Urstruly did put some Pakistani missala for tafreeh o tabba. Therefore,we are supposed to be discussing American culture not Pakistani.

Even the main theme of article is American I dont know why U just went through Islamic and Pakistani history,Is there some hidden agenda?

The history u scanned through is very much old and our young generation is unfortunately not that much aware of. But u intentionally or unintentionally skipped the very much new American history. Is there some hidden agenda?

I do agree with u on some of your preoccupations about Pakistan and Islam but I intentionally avoided that context because that was not my topic or that of our concerning article.

And by the way, people living in Pakistan are `uncivilized`, `uneducated`, `fundamendalist`,and `uncultured`etc. Therefore in the discussion of a pure American (`most civilized and cultured nation`)problem,it is totally unfair, unrealistic and unjustified to involve Pakistan or Islam. If u have some hidden agenda then that`s another thing.

Once again, I`m sorry to say that intentionally or unintentionally, u did skip my main point which is the last one in which I tried to put some causes and affects of marketing tactics of most `civilized` nation`s Capitalist gods to win teenage market.

Do u have some `historic perspective` to defend these marketing gods?

In the end, I`ll request all of my chowk fellows that please try to stick with the topic and material of article so that we could get something worth out of such discussion otherwise it`s just waste of our precious time.

At chowk, I can see a lot of intelligentsia who have ability to prove that crow is white, not black. But that`s not fair with your God`s gifted abilities, put them in some positive manner. Even though u have some hidden agenda, put it forward in integumentary form and let others speak for you. This way, u can estimate the acceptability and versatilisty of your agenda. Wish u all good luck.

The Day When God Died

INFORMATION REACHED TOO LATE!

The death of God can be defined in numerous ways and thus, billion and trillion number of examples can be presented for the death of God but I`ll stick with Urstruly`s definition.

God was dead the day,

* when the most powerful man on earth tried to change the meaning of sex and he did change the meaning to a certain extent.

* when two men and two women decided to live as a couple and this changed the meaning of men and women.I`ll not be surprised to hear one day that woman is a politically incorrect word.

* when incest became acceptable to a man or woman out of love for his/her lover/beloved.

* when Briteny Spears sang the hit song,``I`m not that innocent`` while her attire was proving her proclamation more than her words.

* our capitalist lords decided to win teenagers market and they started with the most revealing outfits. The main consensus was that every effort must be taken to make pre-teens and teens look grown-up and most of all sexy. No single voice was heard in any forum, senate or parliment against this attack of its kind and for this, even the word inhuman is not enough. Even though,in this society, food and sex are the most vital part and President Clinton`s definition of sex has done predators`job easy. Let`s suppose that this society does`nt mind about sex then what our capitalist marketing gurus have done is acceptable. But unfortunately this is not the case even then. This has intensified and in some cases, created a huge gap between haves and havenots, a constant hostile war among parents and children has erupted and most of all and worst of all, it has increased the menaces of drugs and forced sex among our young generation.

Even on the same day when Urstruly found out that God is dead, God has died a number of times before. For example, when he found out that Chinese sales girl is ass-less and also that Wonder Bras work wonders,God was dead already.

In the end, I`ll salute Urstruly for his wonderful article, he sure does wonders with his thought process and writing power. Even if he is a master of making things up,his fiction looks more appealing and true than ``true stories``. I`ll end with a qitta of I think Syed Adam or Habib Jalib!

*too ne asmat farokht kee haey

*ik faqey ko mitane keliay

*log Yazdan ko bech detay han

*apna matlab nikalne keliay

DAM DA KEE BHAROSA!

Thanks Mr.Siddiqui for your admiration of Madem`s great contribution to our country, she surely deserves it. U have rightly told our young desi kids who have become fascinated with today`s `disposable` singers that such a great talent was our Madem Noor Jahan that she governed the hearts of a number of generations. She was not only a wonderful singer but an astonishing beauty queen too. The song u mentioned is a ghazal of Faiz Ahmed Faiz,it sure is best one of Madem. Madem was such a brave lady that she sang this ghazal in a mehfil in which Ayub Khan,President of Pakistan was chief guest and at the same time, Faiz Sb was in Jail for Rawalpindi Conspiracy case. No one can think of such a `be-adbi`(dishonor) but Madem did`nt care.Faiz Sb was so impressed that he attributed this ghazal to Madem. On Madem`s death, so many celebrities and great artists admired Madem`s contribution to music industry but Lata Mangeshkar`s remarks are more than anything.

Dear Urstruly #21

Would u pl mind picking Paki-slangs dictionary and inform your `qaereen` about meaning of totay magazine and also bless them with names of such alluring magazines that can be termed as totay magazines. If u dont mind tell us that magazines u mentioned dont turn readers unable to get up and open the door.

Yet Another South Asian Story

A REBEL GIRL IS NOT WANTED IN SOUTH ASIA.

Poor Aruna`s story is typical tragic story of a south asian girl who`s crime is worth punishing: thinking to change her fate. She was going to go against what had been destined for her by our society. Bravo journalist Virani and your husband, I salute u to bring Aruna`s story to lame light. May be your great effort can bring a little difference in our social system. It can also teach present day Arunas to quit dreaming about a better life or be very careful that there are so many Sohanlals following you in dark basements. We cannot doubt about the good intentions of Dr.Deshpande but what he did for Aruna did not help her at all.

Land of Acceptance and Respect!

Thanks Siddiqui for sharing this thought provoking and an eye opener book to us. This book is sure a must-read for all of us, living in this land of opportunity. We should also start thinking that how could we make this land with equal opportunities for all, for every person to be respected by his/her worth and not by his faith or origin. Even at higher level, we feel sometimes aliens on some occasions. A group of us was visiting a doctor friend in a big hospital who`d met a terrible accident. Most of our friends were Sub specialist doctors, computor programmers and engineers. The lady on desk was first amazed that how could so many people come to see a friend then she asked a friend of us who is cardiologist (originally from India), from where you have come, when he told the name of his city, she said no I mean originally where are you from? I wanted to ask her where are you originally from? We have to work for elimination of such mentality. As I tell my american friends that whole America is full of immigrants except red indians who are not visible mostly here. To be accepted and respected, we`ll have to be united and work as a group. But unfortunately, we are divided in different sections. We need a Martin Luther King to lead us to the Land of Acceptance and Respect. Trend in our folks is to work and progress individually and in that, we are successfull too in some ways. They are getting marvellous achievements in different fields. Most recent example is that of Night M.Shyalmalan(creator of Sixth Sense and Unbreakable), who has emerged as a Hollywood player,No. 77 on Entertainment Weekly magazine`s list of the 101 most powerful people in entertainment(ahead of David Letterman,Robert De Niro, and Leonardo DiCaprio). There are so many great lawyers, doctors, scientists and engineers. A lot of our folks boast of having dinner at White House. But as a whole, we don`t have any say specially in political spheres.

Beant Singh and Uptight Pakistani People!

It`s an excellent article,I really appreciate your concern for Beant Singh. But what I can understand from your article, u did not even look into his eyes and could`nt tell if he was ``fundamental one`` or ``broad minded one``. What kind of relationship u find appropriate between u uptight people and that poor cabbie. U also did`nt like inclusion of religion in this kind of parties, that`s fine but at the same time, u are upset at dancing of poor single guys. What else u were expecting, what would have been your response if they all have started praying together. May be u did not like their dancing style, but this is because they were not professional. They were just showing their `live`spirit and trying to bring hall`gulla to your party.

When Pinky Broke My Heart
Posted by khattur Nov 30, 2000 12:42 pm
PINKIES ARE MADE TO BREAK HEARTS!

I can feel only sorry for poor Sami but Pinkies are made to break hearts of ‘sachay, saday and bholey’ folks. Pinky could’nt change the course of actions of our poor country specially when she had become a ‘zun’ of a ‘zar.’ Sami was a sensitive and emotional young man but I could’nt digest it that he used to keep Pinky’s photo in his wallet and looking on it made him cry and throw in his commode. It could be a hero of a romantic movie(e.g Wahid Murad) who has just dumped by ‘Ranon’ or Joan Aelia who had been dreaming of becoming a TB patient from childhood ( this is why poor Zahida Hinna has started supporting Nawaz Sharif at this age when only worth mentioning quality of NZ is that he is handsome, the only trait Joan Aelia is devoid of.)

Dear Sami, in situation like that one, sheepish Hayat become a roaring lion and hyper active Saarangs become a passive( or bheegi billi.)

Sami’s den (33) used to carry a whole lot of characters. Gohram’s provocative remarks tell us that he must have been a ‘hot’ personality. Kami harami’s presence and Lala Javed’s tea full tray are telling another aspect of that group.

About what happened to Karachi, I can’t understand that how can those leaders responsible for converting Karachi from a Heaven to Hell, sleep at night? But thanks Allah now I heard that Karachi’s ‘raunqeen’ are returning.
