My Sahib
All his writings in `Ganjay Farishtay` are from Manto`s first hand interactions with the personalities (correct me if I am wrong). `Meera saheb` is just an exception. Maybe, Manto was interested in the Jinnah`s servant who was leading an anonymous life. Manto was always interested in normal ppl of weird and strange background, like violent political workers, hate-criminals, prostitutes (male & female), etc.
Other personalioties in Ganjay Farishtay included Madam Noor Jehan (very interesting, atleast about her sex affairs), some film personalities (Nargis), etc.
Someone asked here why it is called `Ganjay Farishtay`.
When Manto started writing on big personailities of `pious` nature, ppl were very offended because of his portraying them the way they were. Manto got a letter from a woman, who has vurtually cursed him for being so harsh, realistic, and unsympathetic to dead people. Manto was so annoyed that he wrote in the preface to his book (Ganjay Fraishtay) that these pious angels (like the woman in question), should be slapped on their heads as long as they would go bald. This is somethign that I remember.

`sac` is right. Manto has always criticized Jinnah for the separatist movement and creation of Pakistan in his other writings. So `Meera saheb` should be read just keeping in mind that Manto was just interested in reading a normal poor man who has served a person whom he regarded in high esteem. This is just a personal portrait of Jinnah from his servant`s perspective, not from Manto`s perspective. All his writings in `Ganjay Farishtay` are from Manto`s first hand interactions with the personalities (correct me if I am wrong). `Meera saheb` is just an exception. The Killing Fields of Karachi
``While Kashmir is an issue to resolve, I believe we need to get our acts together within our own country. Sometimes I feel like Musharraf is more concerned with global image than the people of Pakistan such as your family friend.``
yes, very right. Musharaf has the first priority of getting internal approval/recognition for his extended miltary rule. If he talks to India, then his main aim is to give West an impression that he is like Arafat (he can fire arms, and he can do the talkings on peace as well).

``Unless you have a local police force accountable to the populace... ( along with the establishment of local judicial authorities .... ie local municipal or state courts - with complete political autonomy ) - it is higly unlikely that law and order will be restored..``
when the country`s ruling party is not elected, and not responsible to anyone, who will talk about making police responsible?
In Karachi, the situation is more complex. the police is mainly comrpising of ppl from outside khi, mainly punjab. They r just there to grab some money. When a police constable stops u on main road, his intention is not to charge u oin traffic rules violation, but to charge a some money for his pocket. they dont have any sympathy for the local ppl. one can say this is much the same situation in Punjab, but hey, what happened in late 70s during civil unrest in martial law? It is always easy to perpetuate a colonial rule on ppl with a law enforcement force comprising of non-locals, as they do not relate to the local ppl at all. This is what is happening in karachi.
In Pakistan, there r 2 reasons for worsening law-n-order situation:
1. Unrepresentative top ruling junta.
2. Unreprsentative local police/administration.
And both of these factors have very bold ethnic colors.

so u want chowk.com give u a quality ``family time`` like PTV???
Where did u get the impression that ``overtly sexuality`` is restricted to children?

``There are two types of people as my daughter says. 1. Who are able to leave pakistan and then feel guilty. 2. The people who can not leave as they are too damn wealthy or not qualifying and then feeling jalous and angree about fortunate once.``
ur daughter obviously lives in a limited circle. There r some ppl who go out just to enrich their experience in social and professional life. They dont have any grudge against Pakistan or the Pakistani ppl. We all have a role to play in Pakistan. If there is something so much wrong in pakistan (and there is), we have just ourselves to blame. If USA is so great, then it is because everyone feels obligated to civil rights and consciousness, and their role in the society.
``Young man go west. You were unfortunate to born here , like a caged bird , think about your children so go for freedom. Freedom demands great efforts and those efforts are worth.``
What were u thinking when u get pregnant with 3 kids? Error by commission or omission?

Reforming the Armed Forces
The thing is that Army is not responsible to anyone, but in democracy (even if crippled one), civil leaders r. For instance, what Jamaat Islami did in Bangladesh with Army, JI is still paying the price for supporting army in anti-human activities. No one votes for them. But army is too proud to be questioned on that.
What is they sell Kashmir like they sold Siachin? Who would ask them?

Pro-army ppl have the logic that if we have always supported talks b/w India and Pakistan, then y r we not supporting Vajpayee-Musharraf talks??The thing is that Army is not responsible to anyone, but in democracy (even if crippled one), civil leaders r. Reforming the Armed Forces
``OK - Pak army bad, evil. Civilans leadership good? MQM good? Remember Mr. Altaf Husain is a British Passport holder, ``
nobody talked about replacing Musharaf sahab with Altaf bhai :) Somehow ur whole argument is based on that we have to select one of the two evils in pakistan, the army or the civilian politician.
u want constructive reforms for Pak Army?
here it is:
1. downsizing of army
2. Death penalty to all army personnel who even comment a word about politics in pak.
3. Full accountability of all the defense budget in open assembly session
4. Public hanging of Musharaf and his other partners in the October coup, because they all violated the consitituion by failing to implement constitutional order of PM (no matter if he was an a$$hole.)
5. Proportional representaion of provinces in army.
I think that will be sufficient.
Now a look at ur ``reforms``:
All ur reforms ar based on the assumption that paki army is somehow just lost a 1971 type war again, and their morale is so low that they r going to take a back seat in the counrty. No man. Just look at these shameful ba$tards. Musharaf is trying to be a president, and his sword will always be on the civilian PM. what good is this democracy.
``How about reforming armed forces schools so that enlisted men`s children have the same opportunities as those of officers?``
and u think they will accept that with a smiling face? wher do u hang out?
``How about making the armed forces a partner in educational training for the economy?``
Have u done NCC? These army officers r illiterate ppl. They r not educated, they r brainwashed. they can not educate ppl.
``How about privatizing the research and manufacturing of conventional weapons - Could this not be a useful tool in breaking the link between a military career and then transition in to State armament manufacturing?``
Good idea, but if a business is setup just to supply jobs to retired armymen, then this business would be another PIA and steel mill. wher the hell merit would go?
``How about making it a requirement that after the rank of Major, officers must take and pass higher education courses and degrees. How about requiring that ranks above Brigade or Lt. General must have a Masters degree or Phd in science or humanities, or military affairs?``
What that education would do? If they r so reliant on perks and interested in politics, what is the use of education? I dont think Musharaf type army ppl r uneducated.
``How about a investigative directorate within the armed forces dealing solely with corruption among armed forces?``
So the thief will investigate whether he has done any crime or not?
``There can be two opinions that armed forces, especially ones that can defend the naton against the kinds of threats it faces today are very expensive and that Pakistan is already under heavy financial stress. Should we just insist that armed forces size be reduced regardless of the nature and size of threats we face??``
Wake up, man. The era of invading and capturing lands is over. In the last few decades, which country has been captured by whom? Only Hong kong has been left to its original ppl. Next in the list is Taiwan. Everything got reolved peacefully. There is no threat to Pakistan if it starts living peacefully, and not getting involved in Kashmir and Afghanistan. This army propaganda should be ignored. They r obviously foing this to justify their perks and huge budget.
