His Beautiful Marbled Palace
Posted by S_Owais Apr 26, 1999 09:01 am
The story ‘His beautiful marbled Palace’ borrows its roles from the tradition of magic realism. Which amounts to saying that it is an art that stoops to artifice, yet fails to take in even a most gullible enthusiast of literary novelty. Doubtless, here and there, one finds a spark of true artistic felicity (e.g. ‘Her mirror never lies, so she stopped asking. Ever so often she checks if it has learnt to be wiser’ Or ‘.. a pain rises impulsively but quickly changes its mind and disappears’) but too many descriptive expressions that pretend to be imaginative ingenuity fall a cropper. They smack of craft-too much craft.

The geological tremors of the protagonist meant to convey his shivering create no stir in the reader. Besides the writer attempts to give his story (a very typical American fad) a Judo- historical slant: ‘Forty years of circling round’, ‘exile’, ‘a whole nation condemned’, ‘ manna’. But it gives the reader no dig. While it may draw somebody with holocaust sympathies on the side of the writer, such an insertion does not inhave meaningfully at all in the total design of the story.

The writer’s penchant for ugliness as well as for vivid description (e.g. the first ten lines contain over twenty adjectives and adverb) cripple its narrative force and undermine its literary ‘Freshness’. Truly, judging from the inscrutable aptness of the title (His beautiful Marbled Palace), this story belongs to the genre one art critic described as ‘anything the artist spits is art’.

Wasiq writes, `` Actually, yes, I do, very much. FYI I also enjoy singing in the shower, skipping on the side-walks ... should I send you my little blurb from the classified section? ``SDM, 28, enjoys skinning furry little animals ... iso ..``

I appreciate your candid self evaluation. You know yourself. Unfortunately at other times, I have felt that you lose touch with reality.

``Given your ability to froth and spew, I hoped to get much much more. You see I am writing a small

interactive program called ``Satan`` (sort of a doppelganger Eliza), and I really wanted to tap into your amazing ability to spew for pages without actually divulging any information. ``

Although I am not a physician, but I have discussed your mental condition with some physician friends who have informed me that your situation may have resulted from imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain. My dear, you will

be glad to know that medical science has quite effective treatments for psychosis.

If you could not comprehend my advise, I will request all the interacters on this forum and particularly your friends to have you visit a competent psychiatrist. This will be a sawab ka kaam. After you get evaluated by a psyhchiatrist and get the appropriate treament please e-mail me and we could continue to debate on evolution and creationist theories.

Your well wisher,

NOTE: I am extremely busy in my work and do not have time for frivolous debates with a legend like like you.

Sunrise at Sydney
Posted by S_Owais Jan 19, 1999 02:28 am
Thanks for reinvigorating the memories of the Sydney test. The first vivid memory I have of the test match was the fluctuating first hour’s play in which Australians lost four of their key batsmen and scored 54 runs. The series was one of the most keenly contested and entertaining series of 1970s played in Australia. The series was definitely not meant for weak hearts. Just to add to your description of the series, I have few comments to make:

· This was the first series in which Australian umpires began the trend of favouring the home side with some dubious decisions on critical occasions. Doug Walters was twice given benefit of the DOUBT. The Pakistani players refused to applaud when he scored fifty and later on the Pakistani captain was quite vocal in showing his displeasure over both the decisions. The decisions went a long way in saving the first match for Australia.

· This was the first series in which the Pakistan side after suffering morale shattering defeat in the second test came back against all odds to square the series.

· The Pakistan side was completely demoralised after their 350 runs defeat in the second match. The Australian media and their counterparts in Pakistan were convinced that Lillie had cast a mesmerising spell over the Pakistani batsmen. However, only the Pakistani captain repeatedly insisted that Pakistan would square the series by winning the third match at Sydney. It is true that the ``Man who wins is the man who thinks he can``. To date I marvel what made Mushtaq so confident about the victory in the last match.

· Imran while bowling during the second innings of the second match was definitely inspired by Dennis Lillie’s earlier ferocious spells. Lillie had demolished the Pakistan batting in both innings. There was a general consensus after the second match that Lillie was too hot for Pakistani batsmen to handle.

· It was the first series in Australia in which the Pakistan side proved Ian Chappel’s earlier comments that Pakistani batsmen love to play the Australian quick bowlers and as such cannot be overawed by their pace battery.

· The Sydney match was the first one in which the Pakistani fielders did not have greasy palms. Zaheer injured himself in getting rid of Gary Gilmour but did not let the catch drop at a crucial moment.

· The Sydney match did a lot of good in removing the fear of Lillie’s famous in-cutters and deceptive slow delivery from the mind of the Pakistani players..

· The Sydney match was the first match in which the Pakistani public became aware of the terminology ``The Ugly Australians``. In the first innings, with Lillie bowling at a ferocious pace and threatening to once again torment the Pakistani batsmen, the Australian crowd was chaunting ``Lillie, Lillie, kill them``. The crowd was put to silence by Majid (48 runs) with some scorching square cuts and cover drives with effortless ease.

· Sydney match saw the emergence of Miandad as a player who was equally good even playing against a cunning Lillie on a lively wicket and with a biased and hostile crowd supporting the bowler when compared to playing on featherbeds in Pakistan.

· Pakistan remained an impotent cricket force till 1982 (Lords) even after their victory in Sydney. They lost to WI in the next series in WI. They had 0-0 draw against England in the home series and a 2-0 loss to the same folks in the away series. They had a 2-0 victory against India in the home series only to lose by the same margin in India later on. They won 1-0 against a lowly placed New Zealand in New Zealand only to draw 1-1 against the rock bottom placed Australians in Australia. They managed 1-0 victory over Australians in Pakistan with Lillie turning out to be a miserable failure on benign Pakistani tracks. Then Pakistan lost 1-0 to WI in Pakistan and a 2-1 loss to Australia in Australia (1981). It was in this series that Imran invented his famous in-swinging yorkers and became a truely deadly bowler (in the words of Richie Beaund) which no batsman liked to face.

My dear Wasiq (59)

You wrote that it relaxes you to write. Does it also give you ecstasy talking loud to yourself in the facade of a shimmering mirror as well? Based on your arguments so far, I have not even a shred of doubt in my mind that it does. In fact, I firmly deem that an individual like yourself who is headstrong, bigot, naive and closed minded- probably left your neurons in a refrigerator- should be ashamed to even call himself to be even remotely related to scientific methods. Mr. Wasiq, you are a legend in only your own head. And your head, I am not sure what it contains, obviously it could not accept any sane ideas in it. This can plausibly be attributed to short circuiting of your brain.

I pray that you mature over time and respect the opinions of other people and improve your writing tone. As a matter of fact, if you willingly give up bigotry and vow to become better, I will take you under my wings (as earlier pleaded by you) and bring the best out of you. This is something that even editorship of chowk has not been able to do. Think over it seriously. Actually working on individuals with an impotent mind gives me significant relaxation and contentment.

With very kind regards,

Owais

JOKE OF THE DAY

A patient goes to see a doctor. The doctor inquires about the symptoms that were bothering him. The patient replies that he believes he is a dead man. During several sessions of hypnosis treatment, the doctor tries his best to convince the individual that he was not dead. However, the hypnosis treatment had no effect on him. Finally the doctor asks his patient whether dead men bleed or not. The patient replies in negative. The doctor makes a small scar on the patient`s right hand. The hand bleeds. `See you are alive`, doctor points out to his patient. The doctor now thinks that he has solved the case. The patient replies that there is a new problem. The doctor inquires regarding the nature of the new problem. The patient replies, ``your experiment just proved that dead men bleed`.

Moral:

1) Hypnosis treatment may not work in certain chronic and eccentric patients.

2) Old habits never go away.

3) Once a psychotic always a psychotic

4) Once a chimp always a chimp

5) Once a bigot always a bigot

JOKE OF THE DAY

An monkey goes to a bar and asks for wine. The bar tender serves the wine. The monkey after consuming the wine spits on the table. The bar tender gets angry and asks the monkey about this act. The monkey was embarrassed and told the bar tender that it was an old habit and that he does not know how to give up this habit. The bar tender asks the monkey to see a good psychiatrist and provides the monkey with contact address of a psychiatrist. The monkey returns to the bar after one month. The wine is served and in the end the monkey again spits on the table. The bar tender angrily inquires whether the monkey got himself treated by the psychiatrist. The monkey praised the doctor a lot and mentions to the bar tender that the treatment helped him a lot. The bar tender confusingly points out to the monkey that there has been no improvement. The monkey replies that significant improvement has taken place. With a slight pause the monkey adds that previously he used to be embarrassed but now he is no longer embarrassed by the habit of spitting.

Conclusion:

Old habits never go away.

Once a chimp always a chimp.

Once a bigot always a bigot.

Re: Pat Shah

I fully endorse your views. Chowk has been focussed mostly by upper middle and upper class. There may be coffee party begums in Karachi, I don`t disagree. But there are things other than CPBs in Karachi which a person rather many would dislike. This reminds me quality of a Hasina Moeen`s drama: always focussing certain particular culture.

Re: Aliaya

The quality of a good writer is that the writer does not produces work only for a certain class of the people.

Re: Pat Shah

Well said Mr. Shah. You are very much correct. Job churn may back fire as in the case you mentioned. However, in Pakistan, unemployment remains of prime concern among the engineers. Today another leading consulting firm fired 35 engineers from their office in Karachi. These guys have vowed to sue the MD and the management and are in the process of hiring an attorney.

They have decided to take up to the management unlike their counterparts who were fired a few days ago. I appreciate your astute observation and response to the article.

Best regards

Job Churn
Posted by S_Owais Dec 26, 1998 01:24 am
Nice article! But many situations discussed in the article do not apply to countries like Pakistan. In Pakistan, employees very seldom change their job. The reason is evident: the unemployment percentage is so high that employees consider it a benison to stay in job. The other day I was reading newspaper which carried a story of a lay-off of 140 engineers from a leading consulting firm in Pakistan. The laid off employees do not know where to go and how to search for new job. They were all competent employees. I happen to know large number of them. They were laid off because of scarcity of in-hand projects.

Similarly the salaries for engineers in Pakistan are at rock bottom. For example a fresh graduate in earns Rs 4000 per month. For oil and gas sector, the figures are 30 % more. The salaries are unrealistic considering the inflation and cost of living in Pakistan. No attempt has been made by the government to link the salaries with any index what so ever.

Another aspect which has recently been initiated by many sagacious organisations in Pakistan is job re-training. As the opportunities for an employee dries up in one department, the organisation with the consent of the employee, transfer an individual to another department which has a completely different job description. The employee gets the training and starts working. The good aspect is that the employee does not loses his job.

Challenge is not the only reason why people change their jobs. Nor higher salary is the criteria in many cases. Many employees are lured by other companies with promise of higher level of authority. The companies in Pakistan never study the reasons why employees leave an organisation. The reason again is unemployment in Pakistan. There is a ready supply of engineers to fill up the position. So the company never has problem regarding the unavailability of engineers. The company may suffer a little because the new employee needs time to train himself for the job. But this deficiency is overcome very soon. Costs may be higher for senior level positions but again at that level, the nature of job is managerial only.

This was a nice article; perhaps article of the month. However, I know that Wasiq Bokhari (thinking mind of chowk) would not agree with me and would apply his scientific logic to my comments and tear them apart.

Mr. Shafqat:

Have you been declared an authority

on evolution? At least the article that you wrote

in a flowery language does not show that ;).

I rest my case.

Mr. Wasiq:

The language you use, ``Do not want to be in a pissing race with any body`` speak a lot of you.

Before I show you my mettle so that you consider accepting my tutelage, you need to improve your

writing tone. I certainly refuse to train an

individual who uses such a despicable language.

Thanks for also acknowledging that evolutionary

theory has only ``SOME PROOF``. Thus you recognise

that it is not proven. That was the whole problem.

The choice of words in science have to be PRECISE.

Unfortunately, the naive author continued to defend his superficial argument without much basis. However, I am glad that finally you have agreed with me.

I will continue to believe in the existence of God. I do not need any scientist to prove it to me scientifically. Just like you said, `in science

what is proven today is disproved tomorrow``. I concur and your thoughts reveal that our knowledge is never perfect and can change. I would continue to enhance my knowledge of science and in fact despite the fact that the knowledge is imperfect it has helped our world grow. I have always respected scientific methods. However, I will also continue to vehemently believe that when a man tries to comprehend this universe on the basis of PURE REASON it produces a ``thinking`` which is as inconsequential as one`s mind with respect to universe.

Throughout the history, we find people who believed that it is their ``mind`` that is the god. They assumed that their thinking processes would alone led them to comprehend the reality. However, they soon find themselves caught in the web of their own processes. They start following their own choices, their own self, in open rebellion to Allah. They are then led astrayed to forever wander in lowest of the lowest levels of humanity. See the extent of giant leaps they made with thier minds:

Age of reason

Evolution I survive therefore I am [evolved]

or I have might therfore I am [right]

Capitalism I greed therefore I am [satisfied]

Freudian I procreate therefore I am [perverted]

Marxism Society disrtibutes therefore I am [nothing]

Hegalism Society dictates therefore I am [nothing]

Evolution (now) I was chimp, therefore I am

See the pessimisism reflected in all the above exponents of age of reason.

I will continue to believe whole heartedly in Quran and all that is written in it.

``We have indeed created man

in the best of moulds

Then do We abase him

(to be) the lowest of the low

Except such as believe

And do righteous deeds

For they shall have

A reward unfailing

Then what can after this, contradict thee

As to the Judgement (to come)

Is not Allah the wisest of the wisest Judges

{Quran 95:4-8, Abdullah Yousuf Ali`s translation

and commentary}

I know you disagree with the offensive word of bigot. Like you, I am also sorry and hope that in future you will not be a bigot.

I rest my case.

Yet another panga, Mr. Shafqat, courtesy arrogance.

Arrogance is abhored by Allah and He does not

like people with arrogant attitude. Although Wasiq

my friend (of evolution 101 fame) would try to counter

my argument by rigors of scientific processes.

Anyway I will first discuss the better aspect of the

article. The article was written in typical Saad

tradition: nice and easy. The expression flew, choice

of words was immaculate. The opening and concluding

statements were riveting.

Now the not appreciated aspect of the article. Your

communication arrogance has somewhat become less from

what I observed in evolution 101. However, the arrogance

is still there; I would say is largely there. Although

I enjoyed a lot your description of Zaheer putting Andy

Roberts to sword during his prime days ; yet

reaching out for his father was very bad and was in

fact in poor taste. This is arrogance. Andy Roberts

was no Jeff Thompson or Lillie. He was much less

than the two. Zaheer had survived and played both of

them with ease. Frequent subtle innundos to female &

hormones and then sweat was again unlike of an educated

person like you. Although Wasiq would apply his

scientific logic to my comment and tear it apart.

I do understand that during prime youth, pituitary

glands hyper-function sometimes, yet true people

know how to normalize the fucntion without hinting it.

Then description of babaji and her daughter was again

done with arrogance. I know that people living

in those areas are very innocent people. Consider

a man asking his unmarried daughter with such intimate

questions was perhaps for him to bear with.

Well we all know that you used to drive to AKUH during

your studies; why mention it? There are many students

who own Mercedez Benz and drive it; yet when they come

to DMC or SMC they prefer points or public buses. There

is a charm of travelling in such transport. It makes

a person thankful to Allah for bestowing one with such

endowments.

I hpoe that you will take my comments in good spirit

and would not instigate another petty war.

wonder if counseling had been done prior to

Come on Mr. Shafqat; Ms Welch was not the

I am glad that you mentioned your father.

He not only cared about you, he cared about

all his patients.

Re: My dear Wasiq

Thanks for allowing me paternalistically to have

a right to an opinion.

I strongly feel that myself and some other individuals at chowk have substantiated with logical argument that ``the undeniable process of evolution`` is long on theory but short on proof. Fortunately, I have learned with experience that convincing certain I-am-correct-rest-are-wrong type of individuals is analogous to hitting one`s head on a stone wall and I certainly do not want to continue this frivolous debate with an erudite, praise-worthy, self-righteous, logical, bigot

such as you and your crony. You, however, also have a right to opinion.

When an individual tries to comprehend this universe on the basis of pure reason, it produces a ``thinking`` which is as insignificant as his mind with respect to universe. Hegal made the society a dictator and reduced man to an inconsequential existence. Socialism reduced man to a machin that only needs fuel, Frued succeeded only in making man a bundle of perverted thoughts. Now there are intellects who are trying to make man a product of evolution.

Creationist theory can not be scientifically proven at least for time being. Nevertheless, my limitations as a human being and unpredictability of science leads me to believe in the existence of a Super Natural Being. I hope and in fact continue to believe that my faith in God will come true. I also will continue to search for knowledge and like to enhance my experience of science and hope that God will continue to help me with my endeavors. I would definitely take you under my tutelage if you really want it. It will benefit you immensely.

However, there is one little quiz for you: try to prove through rigors of scientific processes the following:

1) Existence of God. Prove that Allah is the One. Allah is Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need. He neither eats nor Drinks.

2) He begets not, nor was He begotten

3) And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him

This is in response to reply # 44.

My Dear Mr. Wasiq

I am utterly disappointed at your reply. Despite my earlier requests, the reply was posted without any HOMEWORK ;)

The only example you could find was of a Qadiani?

Since when have they become believers? You can NOT find ONE example of a Muslim scholar in 1400

years who did not believe that Adam was the first man CREATED by Allah... that is how firmly rooted this belief is in the Qur`an and Sunnah! (References from Quran and Hadith can be provided to you via email upon request) Besides it is not

a surprise that a Qadiani would give a different interpretation to God`s revelation than the rest of the Muslim Umma, after all they have done the same thing to the pure belief in the finality of prophet hood!

ALSO, EXPERTISE OF ABDUS SALAM LIES IN PHYSICS,

NOT IN EVOLUTION.

This is what other known scientists and evolutionists say about evolution

Read, reflect, and enjoy...

``Winners of Nobel Prize are not more competent than God, religion, and life after death than other people...``

(Vladimir Prelog, Nobal Laureate 1967, Zurich University)

``The origin of the universe is a mystery for science, surely for the present. It is a disturbing mystery.

(When asked about the origin of life and and human

beings, he said): The same answer applies.`` (Eugene Wigner, Nobel Prize winner in Physics

for 1967, Priceton University)

``...life only started at the level of a

functional cell...How such already quite complex

structure may have come together, remains a mystery to me. The possibility of the existence o

of God, represents a satisfactory solution to

me.`` (Werner Arber, Nobal Laureate 1978, microbiologist ar University of Basel)

``Evolutionism is a fairy tale for grown-ups.

This theory has helped nothing in the progress

of science. It is useless.``- Bounoure, Le

Monde Et La Vie (October 1963) [Director of Research at the National center of Scientific Research in France].

``The Darwinian theory of descent has not a

single fact to confirm it in the realm of

nature. It is not the result of scientific research, but purely the product of imagination.``-Dr. Fleischman [Erlangen zoologist].

``It is almost invariably assumed that animals

with bodies composed of a single cell represent the primitive animals from which all others derived. They are commonly supposed to have preceded all other animal types in their appearance. There is not the slightest basis for this assumption.``- Austin Clark,

The New Evolution (1930), pp. 235-236.

``The hypothesis that life has developed from inorganic matter is, at present, still an article of faith.``- J.W.N. Sullivan, The Limitations of Science (1933), p. 95.

``As by this theory, innumerable transitional

forms must have existed. Why do we not find t

hem embedded in the crust of the earth? Why is

not all nature in confusion [of halfway species] instead of being, as we see them, well-defined species?``- Charles Darwin, quoted in H. Enoch, Evolution or Creation (1966), p. 139.

``The irony is devastating. The main purpose of

Darwinism was to drive every last trace of an

incredible God from biology. But the theory replaces God with an even more incredible deity-omnipotent chance.``- T. Rosazak,

Unfinished Animal (1975), pp. 101-102.

``One must conclude that, contrary to the established and current wisdom, a scenario describing the genesis of life on earth by

chance and natural causes which can be accepted

on the basis of fact and not faith has NOT yet been written.`` [Dr. Hubert P. Yockey, `A

calculation of the probability of spontaneous

biogenesis by information theory`. Journal of

Theoretical Biology, Vol. 67, 1977, p. 398.]

``It must be significant that nearly all the

evolutionary stories I learned as a student

...have now been debunked.`` [Dr. Derek V. Ager (Department of Geology, Imperial College,

London), `The nature of the fossil record`. Proceedings of the Geological Association,

Vol. 87 (2), 1976, pp. 132-133.]

``I shall discuss the broad patterns of hominoid

evolution, an exercise made enjoyable by the need to integrate diverse kinds of information, and

use that as a vehicle to speculate about hominid

origins, an event for which there is no

recognized fossil record. Hence, an opportunity

to exercise some imagination.``

[American Anthropologist, Distinguished Lecture;

Hominoid Evolution and Hominoid Origins, by David

Pilbeam. Vol. 88, No. 2 June 1986. p. 295.]

``Each species of mammal-like reptile that has been found appears suddenly in the fossil

record and is not preceded by the species that

is directly ancestral to it. It disappears some time later, equally abruptly, without leaving a directly descended species.``

[ New Scientist vol. 93 No. 1295, The Reptiles that became Mammals, by Tom Kemp, March 4, 1982, p. 581.]

AND THE LIST GOES ON... MORE REFERENCES CAN BE

PROVIDED TO YOU UPON REQUEST VIA EMAIL.

``The point of view that you wish to expound is

extremely narrow minded, and you cannot rigorously

defend it from the Book.``

I recommend you to read and understand Quran again.

``The process of creation of Adam in the Book MUST

be interpreted metaphorically, otherwise it does not make any sense.``

Maybe not to you, since you are bent on distorting

religion in light of what you belief is a good enough theory. Nevertheless, it makes perfect sense to me and all the Muslims who have adhered to this belief for centuries.

`` The terms `clay` which after being dried ............you cannot (logically) defend. ``

In matters of the Unseen (Ghaib) we do not apply out intellect, since they are beyond the realm

of this world and its laws. To put it simply I believe in the verses of the Qur`an because they have transmitted authentically and inform me of the world of the Unseen. I do not use my intellect where it is not allowed!

Do you understand?

... the immense amount of scientific literature

that has accumulated in favor of evolution.``

Read my earlier replies. No use in repeating.

`` I hope you realize how ridiculous your .........

..... verified in front of his eyes.``

Read above! The quotes of many evolutionist who think.

I should however go straight ......

.................... idea of evolution bother you,

and you will realize that what I am saying is correct. ``

One thing is definitely proven: unlike your training in the rigors of the scientific process and religious matters, you may put Freud to embarrassment!

``Let me give you a simple example........ universe

comes from nothing more than a quantum fluctuation, ALL basis of religion disappears, including GOD. ``

Perhaps you have read ``A Brief History of Time``

and babbling out the same stuff. Where did the

quantum fluctuation come from? Who caused it?

Think deeply and try to prove it by rigors of

scientific processes.

``However, the opposition to these theories is ................ that animals and us are in fact related, and are products of a basic process that defines us.``

Read Paul Davies for an exposition of some of these theories. You obviously need a better understanding.

``Remember, in science, ideas ........what is learnt today can be unlearnt without causing a sense of insecurity.``

Yes, to a certain extent evolution is there. I don`t deny that. (A copy of my article can be e-mailed to you, if you are interested).

`` There is really no discrepancy between faith and

science, provided one has enough intelligence and

insight to realize it. ``

and of course has enough knowledge of science and

religious texts.

``By insisting on ..... proponents of creationism have done a big disfavor to themselves and to the image of religions.``

Won`t dignify with any comments.

``I invite you to think why it is acceptable to view evolution as a beautiful process ........................ distort it. Instead let your mind expand, and you will discover that there really is no conflict here. ``

Evolution theory is soap-opera for grown-ups.

I invite you to first study the Qur`an properly before you step in these deep waters.

The aaya says, ``Layy-sa ka-mialihi shaeyy,`` NOT ``La shay ka mislay- ha``!!!! Once you have done it, we`ll will discuss the matter furthur.

Also, you can read and comprehend my article on

evolution and then discuss the theory of evolution.
