While various parties in Uttar Pradesh are wooing Muslim voters ahead of the assembly elections due next month, there are also now religious bodies pitching in to help parties they consider secular get Muslim votes.

The All India Milli Council, a Muslim body in UP, is whipping up an anti BJP campaign in the state. It claims it will try and round up Muslim voters from across the state to vote for any party but the BJP.

``To make the BJP lose it is not important to make Muslim candidates win. And on this basis we will not vote for a Muslim candidate just because such a candidate is contesting the elections. A secular candidate is a person who defeats the BJP,`` said Zafaryab Jilani, Member, Milli Council.

The Muslim voters make up approximately 17 per cent of the UP electorate. The vote share divides up unevenly. For 290 of the seats in the UP legislative assembly, the Muslim vote share is about 2 per cent. For another 190, their vote share is 10 per cent and for a remaining 83 seats, their vote share is as much as 20 per cent.

The Muslim vote in the state is fragmented as no one party has been able to capture a majority of their voters so far. For the ruling BJP, it`s an altogether different story. ``For the last 40 to 50 years, Muslims have just been given seats. Just by showing the Muslims a lollipop, they have pushed the real issues of development and social justice to the sidelines,`` said Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi Convenor, BJP Minority Front.

The BJP`s Alpsankhyak Morcha, a wing that looks after minority interests in the party, has asked for 10 seats to be reserved for Muslims this time. They hope to get at least 5.

Other parties have already reserved sizeable chunks of their seats for Muslim candidates. The Bahujan Samaj Party has declared 400 candidates so far of which 86 are Muslims. The Samajwadi Party has declared 300 candidates of which 36 are Muslims. The Congress is also in the process if doing the same.

Support from religious bodies as the elections approach could increasingly become crucial.
