Actually, the language used as Bombay’s Lingua Franca is Bombay Urdu, a variety of Deccani Urdu (enriched by Marathi, Gujurati and anything else which landed up in Bombay). Bombay Urdu had an influence on the language used in Bollywood – especially the bad guys/comic relief (heros and heroines speak a somewhat more refined version).

Of course people from the North don’t recognise it as Urdu (and it definitely isn’t Lucknow ki begamaati zabaan), but Urdu has always been more than what was spoken in the North, and more than what was spoken in courts or in the administration. Just as Hindi, today, is far far more than just what you would hear on Doordarshan, or even read in the Anand Bazaar Patrika etc.
