Soldiers rebel over Palestinian policy

Jerusalem: Fifty-two Israeli combat reserve soldiers have announced they will no longer fight in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, saying military actions there are nothing to do with providing security for Israel and are intended to control and degrade Palestinians.

In an advertisement in Israeli newspapers, the soldiers, some with the rank of major, said Israel`s stringent travel bans, which confine many Palestinians to their communities, needlessly punished the Palestinians. Israel says the closures are needed to prevent attacks by Palestinian militants.

``We declare that we will not continue to fight a war for peace in the [Jewish] settlements [in the West Bank and Gaza Strip],`` the advertisement said. ``We will not continue to fight on the other side of the Green Line with an intent to control, expel, starve and degrade an entire people.``

The Green Line refers to the invisible line separating Israel from the territories it captured in the 1967 Middle East war.

The soldiers wrote that they decided to stop serving in the Palestinian areas when it became clear to them that army orders ``had nothing to do with security, and their only intent is to control the Palestinian people forever``.

Such public criticism of the military by soldiers has been relatively rare in Israel, although over the years some groups of soldiers have refused to serve, including during the 1982 invasion of Lebanon and during the first Palestinian uprising against Israel in 1987-1993.

The world is making progress at a very fast pace. That is why death has become cheap and life costly. Most of the people of the world do not get clean water to drink, unadulterated food to eat. When the world had not made such progress people used to live in mud houses or huts. But now in these progressive days millions of them have acquired the facility of living under the open sky, or on railway tracks or on footpaths. In the past people used to live in combined families but now with the blessing of this ``progress`` man is becoming isolated, utterly lonely. It is becoming necessary for him to s/uck the blood of others and for the others to s/uck his blood. This too is a demand of modern progress. The fast pace of the world`s progress can also be judged by the fact that everywhere hospitals are full to capacity with the sick and ailing people.

The limbs and organs of the dead are being cut off for the living. What is more, the animals of the forest are dreading this progressive man, as to when he will start taking out their organs and transplant them into his own body.

Before the world had made such progress men used to be tall, powerful and strongly built, but to-day the magnificent progress has turned them into toys of plastic which constantly need repairing; which wear out if forced to walk on foot; which even if gently shaken develop a new defect; that is to say that in contrast to be pre-progressive man, the progressive man is half-dead, fragile and more dependant on others. In the days before such advancement had been made people were compelled to eat pure things, to-day thanks to progress there is adulteration everywhere and the eyes of everyone, like those of a vulture search everywhere for `haraam`. In the past man used to drink water from eathern pots thus avoiding a lot of diseases; the modern man drinks water cooled by gas or ice and thus adds to the life and colour of hospitals. For the man before the dawn of progress the cool shade of trees or a wall was enough while for the advanced man even air conditioners are not sufficient. For progress has removed man far from nature and deprived him of all his natural abilities.

The pre-progressive people used to fight with swords and spears. The brave used to win; and the brave never tyrannised others. The modern men fight with missiles and rockets. The cunning deceitful and cowardly win. Such people are always self-centred and evil-natured who persecute others. The character of those who lived before `progress` was love. Their whole lives revolved around it. The progressive man`s charter is trade. He thinks of nothing else but buying and selling. Therefore to-day everything is sold or bought.

The man before progress came about was more intelligent than the man of to-day but instead of flying planes he made do with horses and camels; instead of making gun-powder he used weapons made of iron for he knew that the outcome of exposing the secrets of the earth and skies would be nothing but ; that the man happily pressig buttons would no longer remain human. The people of the olden times used to extract grain from the ground with the strength of their arms while the people of the modern times have, out of their greed laid the land waste by pouring fertilizers over it.

In the days before progress came about the rivers were clean, the springs sparkling clear, the forests were guardians of the environment, the mountains were to be found where they were needed, the air was unpolluted, filled with the fragrance of fruits and flowers; there was a joyful shyness in life, songs of love flowed among relatives. Not only man but the birds in the skies, the creatures in the sea were happy. Although there were no telephone links yet hearts were linked together, and a cry from a thousand miles away was heard and answered. Journey used to be long but extremely pleasurable and rewarding. People were strong, their characters noble. These were the times which are called the ages of darkness, and the effects and traits of these times are being pushed out with all force. For now progress is here to take its place. Neither are rivers clean nor springs. The air is polluted as is the atmosphere. Beside the usual waste now there is the nuclear waste which is creating havoc on land and in the seas. A network of telephone links are spread over the world, the links between hearts lie broken. Man doesn`t even listen to the cry of his next-door neighbour.

Children are being born ailing, emaciated, and crippled. The land in turning fallow. Forests and mountains too, displeased with man are about to disappear. Man travels with the speed of lightening and yet is devoid of happiness and joy. His natural abilities are dead, his morals lie in piece. Fertilizers have ruined the earth, smoke from vehicles and factories has destroyed the atmosphere. The life of factory-workers is being suffocated and crushed between the deafening noise of the machines. Man`s desires and needs are increasing manifold. His feelings of deprivation are making him turn to crime. Women need make-up worth thousands of rupees for their beautification yet their femininity and shyness has been ed away from them. In the past a woman was the joy, the peace of life; the woman of to-day is a show-piece who bedecked with clothes and notes is sold and bought. Her chastity is riven to satisfy the carnal desires and business deals of the men. All this is before our eyes and yet people are insisting that this is progress.

The countries in which people have totally ceased being human are called the ``developed, progressive`` countries. The lands where humanity is breathing its last are called ``developing`` countries, on the road to progress. What progress? What kind of progress is this?

Man can live without aeroplanes, telephones, air-conditioners, refrigerators etc. In fact he can lead a full life without these things, but no one can live without morals, love, brotherhood, honour, unity, and honesty. Without these he either dies or becomes worse than animals. Thus progress is not in inventing further machines, creating new designs in dress and furniture, in proudly erecting sky-rise buildings, or in flying in the air like a fly or mosquito.

Progress is in preserving the natural abilities of man protecting the natural environment, and saving man from becoming a greedy, rapacious animals, a prey to his carnal desires. Progress is promoting love instead of trade in the world, releasing man from the slavery of man and bringing him under the slavery, the bondsmanship of Allah Ta`ala; in abolishing all batil systems existing in the world and enforcing the true, just system of Islam.

When all this comes about we will be justified in saying that man has made excellent `progress`. To call the present times `progressive` is an insult to the very word. To-day there is decline and deterioration everywhere. The worshippers of decline are an impediment in the path of progress. They are calling their descent, their decline, ``progress``. They are considering their to be their life.

A boy passed by.He picked up the stone & took it with him.

The stone now thought,``Of course,travel is what I needed.Now that wish has come true as well``

WENDY MCELROY: IS THE UN RUNNING BROTHELS IN BOSNIA?

Is the United Nation`s police force in Bosnia turning a blind eye or, even worse, participating in sex trafficking? It certainly seems that, as this new scandal emerges, the corruption reaches upward into the UN hierarchy.

If prostitution is illegal in Bosnia, then why — in the presence of some 20,000 NATO peacekeepers and thousands of other U.N. officials, policemen and aid workers — has sexual trafficking in the region become an international scandal?

One answer may be that the United Nation`s police force may be turning a blind eye or, even worse, participating in the sex trafficking itself. It certainly seems that, as the scandal emerges, the corruption reaches upward into the United Nations.

Last summer, American Kathryn Bolkovac, a former Nebraska police woman, was fired from the U.N.`s International Police Task Force. Bolkovac claims it was because she spoke out against the United Nation`s involvement in sex trafficking. Through interviews with 85 women coerced into sex, Bolkovac learned that U.N. officers were not only using the women for sex but also seemed to be active in the business end — for example, the forging of documents to transport young girls across national borders.

The young girls are from desperately poor nations like Romania. Many reportedly answer ads for ``legitimate`` work only to be kidnapped, taken across borders and enslaved in brothels that operate with the full knowledge of the local authorities.

After Bolkovac advised various U.N. officials about the sex ring, IPTF Deputy Commissioner Mike Stiers decided that Bolkovac was psychologically worn out. Although an extension of her contract had been recommended prior to the e-mail, she was transferred to a suburb of Sarajevo, then fired. Bolkovac stated, ``Those responsible ... did not want to hear about this.``

Douglas Coffman, a spokesman for the United Nations in Sarajevo, denied the accusation, but Bolkovac is the not the first to hurl it. Stories of U.N. corruption were already appearing in the European press. David Lamb, a former Philadelphia policeman working as a U.N. human rights investigator in central Bosnia, leveled even more serious charges. He provided evidence that IPTF members were directly linked to forcing girls into prostitution. Most prominently, he named two Romanian officers who sold women directly to brothels. Lamb filed his findings. He found that ``the opposition of the central [U.N.] Mission Headquarters was unbelievable.``

The Washington Post reported on what happened next. ``The United Nations quashed an investigation ... into whether U.N. police were directly involved in the enslavement of Eastern European women in Bosnian brothels, according to U.N. officials and internal documents.``

Another difficulty in assessing the situation is that U.N. officials do not admit that anything is amiss. When asked about Lamb`s allegations against the Romanian officers, Jacques Klein — the U.N. secretary general`s special representative to Bosnia — declared, ``I have absolutely no evidence, no record, and I`m unaware of any internal investigation into any alleged misconduct involving a Romanian police monitor.``

A few weeks later, confidential U.N. documents revealed that Lamb had notified several U.N. officials about the two Romanians. Moreover, after Lamb departed, a Canadian officer, the Romanian government and an anti-corruption unit of the United Nations investigated the case in turn. Rosario Ioanna, the Canadian, issued a report similar to Lamb`s, complaining that local U.N. authorities tried to close down the investigation. Yet the United Nations refuses to allow the Romanian policemen to be interviewed.

Subsequent U.N. investigations appear to be cosmetic. For example, an inquiry was instigated but, according to the Post, investigators didn`t bother to contact Lamb or other whistleblowers. Not surprisingly, the inquiry found insufficient grounds to probe further.

The character revealed by the United Nations in Bosnia is particularly significant today. The agency is pushing hard to become a global government. In March, the U.N.`s High Level Panel of Financing Development will meet in Mexico and endorse recommendations that are expected to include: a World Taxing Authority, global taxes on fossil fuel and/or on all currency exchange and U.N. supervision of all international finance.

As the United Nations pushes for jurisdiction over the globe, it is important to remember how it has acted in Bosnia. The character of an institution, no less than of an individual, is revealed through actions, not words. It is revealed in the small behaviors. Such as the willingness to watch or participate in the selling of young girls into the living hell of Bosnian brothels.

The U.S. is the most powerful force opposing the United Nations. If America refuses to meet U.N. demands — and, as yet, the U.S. has not even paid its U.N. fees — then worldwide government will fail. If U.N. policy in Bosnia is a microcosm of what globalization would look like, then an autonomous and dissenting U.S. becomes the hope of the world.
